Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1

The Olympic Games was a significant competitive sporting event in the life and times of Jesus, carrying right on through the life of the early church and the ministry of the apostles. It’s no surprise then that the writers in the New Testament make so many athletic references to “running races”, “training”, “prizes”, “crowns”, all of which were part of the tradition of the Games.

This year it’s the 2012 Olympics in London. Although the location, scale, format, participating countries, events, and well, practically everything has changed over the years, one tradition has persisted through the

ages — the Olympic Torch Relay.

The traditional Lighting Ceremony took place on 10 May 2012 at the Temple of Hera, Olympia, home of the Ancient Olympic Games. The torch has travelled around Greece, and arrived in Athens and then carried to the UK.

The relay will last 70 days with about 8,000 people carrying the torch a total distance of about 8,000 miles, starting from Land’s End.

This year, the Olympic Torch is perforated by 8,000 circles representing the inspirational stories of the 8,000

Our Christian journey of faith reminds me a lot of this relay. The writer of Hebrews in Chapter 11 talks about the many “inspirational heroes” of faith that came before us. Each of them with their own story about how God delivered them and how His promises were fulfilled in their lives through their faith in Him.

torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame.

Our Christian journey of faith reminds me a lot of this relay. The writer of Hebrews in Chapter 11 talks about the many “inspirational heroes” of faith that came before us. Each of them with their own story about how God delivered them and how His promises were fulfilled in their lives through their faith in Him.

After they carried the “torch”, pressing on in spite of their struggles to take hold of what God had in store for them, they passed their legacy on to the next generation of “torchbearers” who would stand as a lighthouse and witness to the world around them.

They finished their part of the relay and God saw that their faith in Him was well placed. And now they pass their torch to us. The writer of Hebrews says, there are always going to be times when we want to just give up. To say it’s too hard and drop the torch. But we’re reminded that we’re not alone in this journey of faith. All those who came before us. Our place in this journey of ours is just to keep running to recognise the light we carry in Christ, to be faithful to what God has called us to do and be an example, not even a perfect one, but a very real and human hero to the next generation of believers and faithful followers of Christ!

Intermission Theatre In Education Intermission Youth Theatre (IYT) began in the spring of 2008, engaging with young people from London’s inner-city communities who are at risk of offending or whom lack opportunity. Our young people have gone on to have very successful careers in theatre and television, The Britt School and RADA and we have many more members who, through the building of their confidence have gone on to further

education and have found employment.

In June 2009 we connected with the Kensington and Chelsea ‘Youth Offending Team’ (Y.O.T) who began bringing their young people to us and interest has been shown by several other London boroughs Y.O.T’s. Our members recently performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre with the RSC who have given us their seal of approval.

The Intermission Team, part of Holy Trinity and St Saviour, have been urged to take the work of IYT into schools and have won funding to employ Paul Forster as Director of Education to help set up ITiE. Paul trained as a performer at Northumbria University and worked as a professional actor on stage and for radio for several years before he became a full time writer for one of the UK’s biggest theatre in education companies, writing educational plays, teaching materials and training events. He went on to become a freelance script writer and has since written for Virgin media, British Airways and various other industry giants. He is a commissioned playwright having written several different plays for theatre and has even written for BBC Radio 4. For the past three years he worked for Maidstone Borough Council as their Youth theatre Leader and director teaching over 300 young people every week.

The ITiE team consists of the most promising members from IYT, working alongside professional actors. They will initially tour London schools and Y.O.T teams with an inspiring modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ renamed ‘Verona Road’. The 20 minute play blends Shakespeare’s own words with street language; the themes covered vary from postcode rivalry, gang mentality, dealing with consequences, knife and gun crime and much more.

We will be touring local London Boroughs as well as Y.O.T’s with this fantastic production written and devised by Artistic Director Darren Raymond. As well as the production we will provide educational resources to aid further learning for young people; these resources will cover aspects of the national curriculum including PSHE, Citizenship, R.E and English. The resources and play combined will endeavour to help reduce youth offending behaviour, improve citizenship and help young people reflect on their own choices. The young people will see in the play characteristics that they perhaps don’t see in themselves and with our guidance and our resources; they can be encouraged to reflect on their own actions and behaviour.

We will be launching this new venture and a brand new website over the course of this year. Please keep us in your prayers.

Janine Gillion I am delighted to have recently become a member of the PCC of Holy Trinity Church.

As Rectors wife I have loved getting to know everyone over the last four years and really enjoyed being involved in so much of the life of Holy Trinity. I love the worship, the bible studies, being an intercessor, a reader, preparing happy bags for children, and hovering at the back of the church to support the welcome team at church and also making the Rectory a place of welcome.

My full time work is as Manager, Missioner to the Arts, Leader (with Darren Raymond) and Mentor to Intermission Youth Theatre at St Saviour’s Church. Our work there is challenging but rewarding and it is wonderful to see how God is working in the lives of our young people.

I was a church warden of St Saviour’s Church Walton Place but when Lord Cadogan took on the patronage of St Saviour’s and we joined the parish of Holy Trinity this position was no longer applicable. It was, however, the best thing that I could have hoped for as now my passion for both churches is under the same umbrella.

Page 4 Trinitarian Holy Trinity Sloane Square

Darren Raymond My journey with St Saviour’s Church began in 2006; I was part of a theatre company rehearsing Shakespeare’s Othello there. It was my second encounter with the Rev’d Rob after first meeting him at a conference for works of poetry in prisons.

I was absolutely amazed at how the church operated. It was just incredible to see a Church serving in such a fresh and new way but at the same time managing to keep the traditional feel I was used to from the Church I attended as a boy. I started to worship with them on a Sunday.

Rev’d Rob and Janine were both instrumental in nurturing my relationship with God back to full strength and they also encouraged my vocation as an actor/writer/director so much so that they offered me a job as Artistic Director of Intermission Theatre at St Saviour’s Church, a professional

Christian Theatre Company that reflected the Worship of the Church and spoke into the issues of our world today from a truthful place offering a sense of hope through our faith in Christ. In 2008 we set up Intermission Youth Theatre to engage young people at risk of offending and those who lack opportunity.

I am delighted and excited by the joining of Holy Trinity and St Saviour’s, I think it is a match made in Heaven. The two complement each other very well and I am very much looking forward to the future and what God has in store for us.

New PCC Members We are delighted to welcome four new PCC members

Sheila Johnson I come originally from North London and trained in speech therapy, moving in the early 1950s to the West Riding, first to Leeds and then to Halifax where, ten years later, I re-trained as a teacher, eventually specializing in the teaching of English as a second language, whilst retaining my work in speech therapy, particularly working with the deaf. I have been in the congregation at Holy Trinity since 1987 where I served on the PCC in the past and have also been the electoral roll officer. I have been a long-standing member of the National Council of Women and the English Speaking Union and am also a member of the Mothers' Union. Sheila has chosen not to give a photograph of herself.

Page 5 Trinitarian Holy Trinity Sloane Square

Victoria Burgess I joined the congregation of St. Saviour’s Church very soon after it had re-opened again after many years of being closed. I knew immediately that it was the right church for me and was given a lovely welcome and quickly felt part of the Church family. I had just retired after 15 years working for the Salters' Livery Company so had plenty of time to involve myself with all the activities and the beginning of Intermission Actors. It was also very exciting to see the birth of Intermission Youth Theatre in 2008 which continues to grow.

Rob invited me to be a Church Warden seven years ago and I am thrilled that St. Saviour’s and Holy Trinity Sloane Square is now one parish and I am a member of their PCC.

Outside Church I sing in the chorus of the Chelsea Opera Group which I have done for years and am the Secretary of their Committee. I am a Trustee of Fulham Good Neighbour Service, a local charity helping those who cannot manage their gardens, decorating, shopping and visits to doctors and hospitals as well as home visits.

New Parish Administrator and PCC Secretary

Lois Kruk I have returned to the spiritual home of my grandfather, Admiral Sir Rudolf Burmester, who lived just around the corner from Holy Trinity. After serving in two world wars he found peace and quiet in Chelsea. Today it is a very different place, full of hustle and bustle, although I have experienced tranquillity and serenity within this beautiful Arts and Crafts Church.

My route to Holy Trinity has been quite circuitous as I lived and worked in the USA and Australia until seven years ago. My family returned to the UK to be closer to my mother and provide her with care and love. I was extremely fortunate to meet Rev’d Rob at St Saviour’s Church where I became a parishioner. He discovered I had a background in counselling and invited me to join his Chaplaincy to Harrods. I have been Associate Chaplain to Harrods for the past seven years. I am looking forward to serving on Holy Trinity PCC and getting to know the family of the church.

Amanda Lord I first went to St Saviour’s Church when I was 3, in 1966, as I attended the school in the Church Hall and we had a service in the Church every Monday morning. I was delighted to discover years later that St Saviour’s had not been turned completely residential, as I had thought, when I met Father Rob with a view to having my daughter Alice baptised. Obviously I immediately belonged at St Saviour’s and was so happy when they offered me the position of Administrator in 2005.

My role as Administrator has been so exciting as I have been involved in the birth of Intermission Theatre and Intermission Youth Theatre and find I

never have time to get tired of routine as the job is always growing and changing in the most positive way.

The Team at St Saviour’s welcomed the invitation to become part of the parish of Holy Trinity and St Saviour, Upper Chelsea, with the new challenges that would bring and when Father Rob asked me to add the roles of Administrator of Holy Trinity and PCC secretary I jumped at the chance.

Organ restoration at Holy Trinity The new organ has been installed and we now begin the 2 month phase of voicing the organ pipes.

Voicing an organ pipe involves the adjustment of two main parameters: the tone quality or timbre, and its loudness. This is a highly skilled process and is fraught with difficulty, hence the long period of time needed to voice the 4,176 pipes.

During this period complete silence in the Church is required during the week, and the Rector and Associate thank all visitors to the church for their patience and understanding in remaining silent.

Dates for your Diary We are delighted to announce that The Bishop of London is to dedicate the Organ during Choral Matins at 11.00am on Sunday 12th May 2013. Our patron, Earl Cadogan, will also be in attendance. We are grateful to the Cadogan family and Cadogan Estates Ltd for their generously in funding this project.

The Inaugural Recital will be in the evening of Sunday 26th May 2013. The Organist will be David Goode who is Head of Keyboard at Eton College, where he presides over a unique collection of historic instruments and teaches some of the UK’s most talented young organists; he combines this with a concert career that takes him to all parts of the world. Go to www.goodeorganist.co.uk for more information.

Open House London is the annual opportunity to enjoy and celebrate the buildings and places where we live and work.

Once again, Holy Trinity Church will be one of the buildings featured within the listings of places to visit during the weekend of 22 & 23 September.

In previous years, during Open House Weekend, we have had many hundreds of visitors who have come to visit our magnificent church building and to see in particular the glorious stained glass windows.

We are very much aware that Holy Trinity Church is far more than just another architectural gem on a tourist trail through London. It is the ‘Gate of Heaven’ and a place of encounter with the Living God. It is a place of daily prayer and worship and quiet contemplation for many people who live and work within this part of our city. It is the vibrant heart of a worshipping and servant community that bears witness to a living Faith and seeks to welcome and

serve all who enter the church building.

We are looking for volunteers who can assist in this important ministry of welcome during Open House Weekend. If you think you can offer some time on either Saturday 22nd or Sunday 23rd September then give your details to Jojo in the Church Office.

Faith walks During the Olympic Games from 27 July to 9 September, Holy Trinity, with its doors always open, will participate in one of the Diocese of London’s six planned tours that will visit a number of places of worship, and finish at a well-known Central London landmark or transport interchange. People are free to follow these suggested routes or to simply use the trails as a guide to interesting historic religious buildings open to visit within easy reach of Olympic venues.

The Tours will give visitors the opportunity to visit churches to stop and pray, to taste some of London's cultural heritage, or meet local people. For some, this may be their first opportunity to experience a Christian church. With time to spare around attending events, visitors may be interested in walking or cycling to explore, rather than use congested public transport. This will also give local residents the opportunity to explore buildings that they are interested in.

Guides that include maps and more background about each of the buildings involved and signpost material about public transport will be available to download from the Diocese of London’s website, www.london.anglican.org/walking-routes.

is currently devising their next production

The Ring of Envy (working title) Inspired by Shakespeare’s Othello

The play will explore Othello’s original themes of jealously, hate, identity, manipulation and race and how they effect young people in our society today. If you have seen any of the previous IYT productions then you will know what to expect; if you have not then make sure you join us in October where you will witness a powerful, explosive, creative mesh of Shakespeare and street language.
