Functional Decorative
The category of component materials are called Findings.
It includes:- Support Materials Closures Thread Elastic labels
It enhances and preserve the shape of the garment.
It influences the serviceability of the garment and hence should be compatible with the shell fabric in terms of shrinkage, elongation, elasticity, appearance retention, colorfastness, abrasion resistance etc.
Presence of support materials is considered as a sign of quality.
Extra layer of fabric which supplies body, shape and reinforcement to areas of a garment.
Its available in woven, knits, non-woven etc. Fusible and Stitched
It is an extra layer of fabric that is used strictly for warmth or stability.
Used in coats and jackets and selected for insulation value.
Eg Thinsulate, used for ski-pants, jackets and gloves
Polyester Fleece- low cost and used in quilted fabrics
Lining is a lightweight fabric that is sewn into a garment to give a finished appearance to garment’s interior.
It also gives support, shape, provide opacity to sheer fabrics and provides additional warmth.
Nylon & Polyester are durable and lightweight but they can build up static electricity.
Acetate- inexpensive but color can change due to perspiration.
Silk lining is used for high end garments.
Satins can slip on and off over other clothing with great ease. However, it tends to snag over time.
Shoulder Pads
Sleeve Header- Narrow strip sewn into the sleeve cap of tailoredjackets to create a soft roll. Without itthe armscye seam can collapse andwrinkle.
Collar stays and boning
Seam Tapes
Closures are fastenings that may contribute to the aesthetic appeal of a garment in addition to their functional use for adjusting garment to the body.
Buttons are measured in lignes. Lignes= 1/40 of an inch or 40 lignes
per inch of diameter. Therefore, 20 ligne button would be ½ inch in diameter.
Horizontal Vertical
To select the size of the button hole, we have to measure the diameter and the thickness of the button.
For a ball button, measure half the circumference of the button .
Sewn into the garment(light wt. to medium) Attached mechanically(Medium to heavy wt.)
Threads are selected on the basis of :- Color Size Strength Elasticity Colorfastness Ability to form stitches
Cotton Silk Nylon Polyester
Spun thread- Staple fibers that are twisted together to form the thread.
Core spun thread- Spun Nylon or polyester core that is strong and elastic. It is then wrapped with cotton or any other spun fiber that is resistance to heat.
Monofilament thread- Very strong and inexpensive but slippery and stiff.
Multifilament thread- It is made of several filaments twisted together. More elastic and specially used for knits.
The size of the thread is measured withTex.Larger the number, larger is the diameter of the thread.
Made of Rubber or Spandex fiber, covered with polyester, cotton etc.
Woven, knitted and braided
Labels are printed or woven attachments to garments that provide written information.
