GEOMETRIC SYMBOLS AND DEFINITIONS
Feature-Control FrameA specification box that shows a particular geometric characteristic (flatness, straightness, etc.) applied to a part feature and states the allowable tolerence. The feature’s tolerancemay be individual, or related to one or more datums. Any datum references and tolerancemodifiers are also shown.
Datum FeatureA flag which designates a physical featureof the part to be used as a reference tomeasure geometric characteristics of otherpart features.
Basic DimensionA box around any drawing dimensionmakes it a “basic” dimension, atheoretically exact value used as areference for measuring geometriccharacter istics and tolerances of other partfeatures.
Regardless of Feature SizeAbbreviation: RFS. A tolerance modifierthat applies the stated tight tolerance zoneunder all size conditions. RFS is generallyassumed if neither MMC nor LMC arestated.
Projected Tolerance ZoneAn additional specification box attachedunderneath a feature-control frame. Itextends the feature’s tolerance zonebeyond the part’s surface by the stateddistance, ensuring perpendicularity forproper alignment of mating parts.
Maximum Material ConditionAbbreviation: MMC. A tolerance modifierthat applies the stated tight tolerance zoneonly while the part theoretically containsthe maximum amount of materialpermitted within its dimensional limits (e.g.minimum hole diameters and maximumshaft diameters), allowing more variationunder normal conditions.
Least Material ConditionAbbreviation: LMC. A tolerance modifierthat applies the stated tight tolerance zoneonly while the part theoretically containsthe minimum amount of material permittedwithin its dimensional limits (e.g. maximumhole diameters and minimum shaftdiameters), allowing more variation undernormal conditions.
Cylindrical Tolerance ZoneThis symbol, commonly used to indicate adiameter dimension, also specifies acylindrically shaped toler ance zone in afeature-control frame.
Datum TargetsCallouts occasionally needed to designatespecific points, lines, or areas on an actualpart to be used to establish a theoreticaldatum feature.

SINGLE-ACTING BALL LOCK PINSPrecision ground locating pin. Press button to insert orremove. Positive locking until released by pressing button.Available in four handle styles. Two locking balls standard, with four balls available for greater pull-out strength. 3/16 to1" diameters standard. Available in alloy or stainless steel.
DOUBLE-ACTING BALL LOCK PINSSimilar to a single-acting pin, except you release by pullingor pushing the handle. Positive locking. Choice of three han-dle styles. Available with drive-out option (internal spindleextends beyond the shank end). This feature lets youremove a pin under shear loading by tapping the shank endwith a hammer.
ADJUSTABLE BALL LOCK PINSSingle-acting ball lock pin with adjustable grip length (1/2-inch range). Adjust grip by turning handle, then lock with theknurled locknut. Available in three handle styles.
DETENT PINSEconomical locating pin. Locking balls are spring loaded, notpositive locking. Simply push pin to insert, pull to remove.3/16 to 1" diameters standard. Available in alloy or stainlesssteel.
EXPANDING PINSPrecision alignment pin. Diameter expands up to .006 inch-es by moving handle. Positive cam action expands splitbushings to lock pin in place.
LIFTING PINSSingle-acting ball lock pin with one-piece body and four ballsfor high tension loads. Sturdy forged shackle for heavy lifting.
