The Bible verse for 2017 is Psalm 103:1, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name.”

The Hebrew word for “bless” means “health-creating power.” Someone who is “blessed” is gifted with “health-creating power.” To bless someone is to bestow this power on them, or to declare that they have this power. When we “bless the Lord,” we declare that the Lord is the source of this power and we praise him for who he is. It is our hope that as we live into this verse during 2017 we will each “bless the Lord” in our personal lives, that we will “bless the Lord” as a congregation, and that together as we celebrate the sacraments, we will join our voices with angels, archangels and all the company of heaven as we “bless the Lord” in worship.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church experienced many blessings in 2016. The finances of the church are a blessing -- we exceeded the goals for both the Nourishing Body and Soul Campaign and the Walking the Gratitude Path Stewardship Campaign. The refinancing of notes from the sale of Trinity Towers will lead to over $20 million in improvements to the three buildings. New ministries blessed many in 2016 including: expanded opportunities at Trinity Towers, a Blue Christmas service, a new Advent Bible study, and a new set of hand chimes for the music department. Children and youth ministries, adult formation, the health ministry team, fellowship groups, music groups, the prayer shawl ministry, and the Thrift Shop continue to be strong conduits for “health-creating power” to flow through our church.

There is one more amazing example of “health-creating power” from 2016 and that is the Kitchen Committee. We have never seen a committee so dedicated and hard-working as this group. I think we can all agree that the new kitchen dramatically exceeds all expectations.

What’s ahead in 2017? Many opportunities to “bless the Lord”! Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” Jesus then travelled around proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing disease and sickness among the people. In other words, Jesus spread “health-creating power.” The message of the good news of the kingdom carried with it the blessing of God. That is what we believe this church is called to do this year: to share the good news of the kingdom as we spread “health-creating power.”

Here are a few examples of what we are planning this year:

1. We are currently offering a baptism class for children and their parents. So get ready to celebrate several baptisms in the coming weeks as we welcome new people into God’s family of blessing.

2. For the next three weekends we will continue our sermon series on Matthew 5 to explore the whole concept of Kingdom Blessings.

3. On February 28 we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) like never before. The annual pancake supper will be prepared in our new kitchen!

4. During Lent, we will enter into a holy time of exploring the last day of Jesus’ life on earth, 24 Hours that Changed the World. We will do this in a five-week series with groups meeting in homes and at the church.

5. Soon we will see the revitalization of our lovely historic chapel enter a very active phase. The chapel has been a blessing for this community for 130 years and we look forward to many new opportunities to spread the good news of the kingdom and God’s “health-creating power” in that prayer-filled space.

6. We will have our annual women’s retreat in March, summer camps in June and July at Camp Wingmann for children and youth, and in November the men’s retreat.

7. The fall will also bring the opportunity to go deeper in faith with a special series of classes for teens and adults who desire to be Confirmed, to be received into the Episcopal church, or to celebrate the Reaffirmation of Faith – all in preparation for a visitation from Bishop Brewer on November 19.

It’s going to be a busy year of blessing the Lord together!

Psalm 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name.” That is what Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is all about – coming together, here is this place, every week, to bless the Lord – to receive the “health-creating power” of God so that we can become conduits of that power to pass it on to the world around us. We look forward to a blessed year!

BLESS THE LORD

In his best-selling book, 24 Hours that Changed the World, pastor and popular author Adam Hamilton helps readers relive the one day in history that changed everything.

We invite you to participate in a 5-week Lenten small group study based on this book so you may experience and understand the significance of Jesus’ final hours. The study draws on insights from history, archaeology, geography, and the Bible, and will take you to the Holy Land to provide a deeper understanding of the most amazing day in history. We’ll visit the sites where those earth-shaking events took place, and we’ll walk where Jesus walked along the road that led to the pain and triumph of the cross. Plan now to join a small group for Lent. The only cost to participate is a $10

Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center, Oveido, FLTheme: “Rejoice, Pray, Give Thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5: 16 – 18)

Featured Speaker: The Rev. Phyllis Bartle, Rector, St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, Orange City.

What Don’t You Have Time For?Life is busy! There are more and more ‘things’ to do than we have hours to do them. With all the things we have to accomplish each day how in the world do we live out our Christian lives as faithful followers of Jesus?

During our time together we will explore ways that the Lord uses to encourage God’s people to rejoice, pray and give thanks at all times and in all situations.

We’ll try to figure out how we can make that happen in the midst of our busyness – and maybe in spite of our over-active lives.

Along with the workshops, there will be times of fellowship, and worship with music led by Clare Toy.

Health Ministry NewsSome changes from the Health Ministry Team to our church family. The members present at our monthly meeting on January 19 decided we need a new approach to the way we are assisting parishioners to monitor their blood pressure. Beginning the first weekend of February (2/4 & 2/5) and continuing the rest of 2017, we will do blood pressure monitoring the first weekend of every month. Our plan is to have one or possibly two health professionals available in the west end of the Narthex (behind the screens) to do the monitoring. The physical setup will be the same... sign in sheet, recording of your blood pressure, and an information sheet if you desire. Your time invested is about eight minutes a month to know your numbers. The time schedule will be a little different: Saturday at 4:30pm and after the service for 30 minutes, Sunday morning from 8:15 - 9:00am, and following the 9:00am service (about 10:30am) until the completion of the 11:15am service. We believe this may make it easier for more parishioners to know their blood pressure readings if they so desire. I’m asking for help from the health care professionals in our parish to perform this service. If you feel this is something you are being called to do for our members, please call the church office (321-723-5272) or e-mail Carolyn ([email protected]). This will allow you to pick dates and times that work for your schedule. I’m open to you working one month a year or every month - whatever works for you. All equipment will be provided, but if you want to use your working unit, that will work, too.

We will continue to do health and informational forums. Watch the bulletin and the health board in the Narthex for upcoming topics.

We are always looking for presenters from our parish or the community. If you have a topic or profession that will benefit others, please speak to one of the Health Team members.

Yoga for Healthy Bones – a three week class starting Monday, February 13 from 6:00 to 7:15pm in the Parish Hall. Call Peggy Snead (321-242-9425) with questions. Sign up by calling the church office at 321-723-5272. Cost is $20 for the three week series.

From Youth Minister, Phil!This month the Youth Group will be serving Holy Trinity in a few ways;

• We are starting with coffee hour on Sunday February 5th after the 9:00am service. Parents and kids are encouraged to bring in fruits, veggies, pastries, etc. and to help with set up and clean up.

• We will also be helping out at Parents’ Night Out on Saturday, February 19. The Youth can earn a little babysitting money by helping watch the younger kids by leading games and activities.

• Our final big event of course is our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper! We are fortunate to get to put the brand new kitchen to use! We will serve pancakes, blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, bacon, applesauce and more goodies from 5:00 - 7:00am, but all Youth are to assemble right after school so we can get situated. We need all hands on deck for this one because we are expecting a big turnout from the whole congregation!

Other things to look forward to this month include:

• We are continuing our study of the New Testament every Sunday after the 9:00am service. We will wrap up our study of Acts and get into Paul’s letters before we begin our Lent series “24 Hours that Changed the World.”

• Wednesday Social Night meetings continue to meet (As of 2017, we no longer meet on Thursday nights as it did not fit in well with many schedules). At 6:30pm we eat and catch up on the week, 7:00pm we play a game, and from 7:30-8:00pm we answer a faith-based question. All questions are asked by the Youth to be answered by the Youth, we challenge each individual to own their faith!

If you would like to ask a question for Wednesday night or if you have any general thoughts or questions about Youth Group at Holy Trinity, please contact Phil Nunez at [email protected].

Hospital Visits: Our Parish Secretaries call Holmes Regional Hospital daily to check for parishioners, but there are times when the Hospital is unable to give them the names due to HIPAA laws. As a result, it is possible that you or your loved one could be in the hospital, and we will not know about it. The best way for our clergy to know if you or a loved one are in the hospital is to call the office and let us know. Also, please note that Wuestoff Hospitals have no system in place to let us know about our parishioners in their care, so it is essential for you to call us directly to let us know if you are there. Thank you!
