PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

CONTENTS

We have seen a year of changes in lots of aspects in Triathlon England - one being the management structure, with some staff members moving on to pastures new. We now have a more streamlined structure across both Triathlon England and British Triathlon that is working towards a shared vision for our sport, together with all the Home Nations. I would like to wish the staff who have left good luck in their new roles and welcome the new faces joining the team. I have every faith that the new Senior Management Team and the wider staff will drive Triathlon England forward, giving us a stronger, bigger and better organisation.

We saw more iconic racing in Hyde Park in both the elite and age-group races at the Vitality World Triathlon London and we eagerly anticipate next year as the ITU World Triathlon Series moves north to Leeds, the only down side is it’s the wrong side of the border - in my opinion, being from Lancashire.

At the other end of the scale, GO TRI continues to grow in popularity. A target was set to hold a GO TRI 1000 in April with the aim of getting 1,000 participants racing GO TRI events over one weekend at numerous venues around the country. The result, I am pleased to say, was success with targets meet.

The Triathlon England – National Championships continue to go from strength to strength, members had the opportunity to win National titles in sprint, standard and middle distance triathlon, aquathlon, paratriathlon, duathlon and cross duathlon as well as the ever popular relays. I was fortunate to witness the Triathlon England – Duathlon Championships held at Oulton Park race track. The event provided a first-class race to go along with first-class athletes who competed for the coveted National titles at stake.

At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) we will be hosting the second Triathlon England Awards, which hopefully some of you will be attending. This is where we get to reward and recognise the many volunteers who make our sport so great by announcing the national winners of our awards who were nominated and voted for by the regional committees. The awards will be presented to coaches, officials, volunteers, clubs and race events.

Lastly I would like to thank Jack Buckner (Chief Executive), Bill James (Chair of the Triathlon England Management Board), the whole Triathlon England Management Board and the Council members for making my second year as President a thoroughly enjoyable experience, if not trying at times. As I have served my maximum term as president, I would also like to wish my successor (appointed by the Council after the AGM) an equivalent if not better experience as President of our great organisation.

“I’ve always wanted to have a go at triathlon but the fact that I can’t really swim and am not very good on a bike or at running put me off. When I read about the GO TRI 1000 event I thought now was the opportunity for me to have a go. The only thing I have really done to prepare for the event is taking my basket off my bike – but I can now say I’m a triathlete!”

LOOKING FORWARD

THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERSTHANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS

I believe that as triathletes and volunteers we all share an understanding of how our sport is dynamic, challenging and rewarding. As I approach my first anniversary of being Chairman of Triathlon England, I can confirm that this is exactly how it feels for your NGB and the leadership team. I’m delighted that this year has seen the Home Nations’ Boards become better aligned with British Triathlon in a shared vision for our sport, and that going forward we will deliver better and more consistently in our key priorities of Participation, Events, Membership and Talent.

Next year is another vital year in the development of triathlon. The move of the ITU World Triathlon Series to Leeds provides an opportunity for us to deliver a landmark triathlon experience that makes a step-change in the profile of our sport. Already the priority entry campaign has shown a real benefit to members and built a great buzz about the event. Our ambitious plans should see us welcome many new entrants, offer wonderful experiences for existing triathletes and engage new fans.

The Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds weekend should be the ideal ramp up to the excitement of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in August and September. Good luck to everyone involved in Rio and Leeds!

I’m also hugely excited for the launch next year of our wonderful new initiative Skills School, of which more news will follow. This is a major investment supported by our regions to bridge the gap from clubs to regional academies, a balanced investment in the development of young athletes and coaches.

So you can see that in 2016 we have massive opportunities to tap into levels of exposure and enthusiasm for our sport that build on London 2012, this time we must make the most of them. I think you will agree it’s vital we deliver not only continued medal-winning success, but also maintain the healthy growth of the sport.

In support of all this, at the AGM we are launching our new brand and vision, we believe these provide a great platform for all of us working and volunteering in triathlon.

We are all part of the success of our sport. The positive comments I hear so often about triathlon are linked to the experiences and encouragement newcomers have had from volunteers – family, friends or someone at their local club. My last word is thanks to all the volunteers involved in triathlon. Many thanks to all of you for your continued support and outstanding contribution to our sport.

Have a great year in 2016!
