WELCOME to Teme Triangle…this month with Judie Welsh.

March is often thought a quiet month but not here…once again our pages arepacked with news and happenings, including a veritable explosion of newenterprise, inspiring stories of goodwill and community spirit and the rather moredown to earth issue of that housing controversy, which made the national pressthis month. And, with local elections coming up in May, maybe this is youropportunity to contribute to the community?

But first, a word about your TT. Some people are confused about just who is in the chair at TT each month!After a year of sharing the editorship, the team has decided to continue withthe arrangement, but you need not worry, all contributions that go [email protected] will reach the editor of the month, who willalways respond. If you are keen to know exactly who was in the chair in aparticular month, we shall introduce ourselves at the outset! NEW ENTERPRISE IN THE TEME VALLEYOne of the things that struck me when I came back from my year ‘out, was thefeeling of vibrancy around these parts. New faces, new activities, and massesof new enterprise. Israel is said to be the ‘start up’ nation but we’re doing ourbit here!

SHELSLEY HERBS AND FLOWERSKate Hurst, (see our front cover photo), who moved to Pear Tree Cottage inShelsley Kings three years ago, found herself with three acres of sumptuousgarden, planted by local garden enthusiasts Peter and Sheila Collis. “Wemoved from Ironbridge in July and the garden was quite beautiful, but a bitdaunting”, she told us, “and I set about learning and discovering all that it hadto offer”. Now Kate, who is a busy mum too, has launched Shelsley Herbs and Flowers,offering local, seasonal bunches of cut flowers and herbs through Clifton Shop and Top Barn or to order. NEW CLIFTON BUSINESS GEARING UP FOR SPRING TRIMOur next ‘budding’ entrepreneur is Clifton’s Brian Butler, who is bracing himselffor a rush of local residents wanting their mowers serviced since taking overthe garden machinery repair business operated for many years by BrianRichards.


Brian is best known for his tree-work,having trimmed many of the gardenhedges and trees in the village for years,but now he is embarking on a newbusiness repairing and servicing mowers,chainsaws and strimmers. In due coursehe hopes to be able to both sell and hiremowers. Son James (18) helps his dadwith gardening work.

LOCAL AUTHOR’S CONNECTION TO NEWCHATSWORTH GATESAnd whilst some were out in the garden anotherenterprising lady was trawling through her familyarchives!

When the restored Golden Gates at ChatsworthHouse in Derbyshire are unveiled in May, one ofthe guests, local author Ann Carmichael, willhave a very special connection to their creation.

Ann’s ancestors lived in the Peak District forhundreds of years and one of them was thetalented blacksmith, John Gardom, who isreputed to have made the original gates in 1692.

Her first book ‘THE IRONMASTER’ now has a sequel ‘17 CLIPSTONESTREET’ which tells the story of Sarah, who in 1785 gave birth to an illegitimatechild and was banished from her Derbyshire home. Ann said “it took five yearsof searching through records before anything about Sarah Gardom was foundand it was a moment if great joy.”

CLIFTON HOUSING DEVELOPMENT MAKES THE NEWSYou may have seen Clifton’s housing developments mentioned both locally andnationally this month. (Malvern Gazette and Private Eye). This is the currentsituation.

Hope LaneMiller Homes, the developers who have been granted planning consent for 30houses in Hope Lane, Clifton, have removed their signs from the site. Astatement issued in January says: “Miller Homes have not concluded thepurchase of the site and are unable to provide timescales as to when, or if thiswill happen at this moment in time.”

Blue Shot MeadowGreenlight Developments have been granted outline planning permission tobuild 48 houses on Blue Shot Meadow in Pound Lane, Clifton.

Steps Farm/Church House FarmAccording to Sir Anthony Winnington, “The Brockhill Estate is in the process ofnegotiating the terms of the section 106 on Steps Farm. [This] can take sometime and has to be agreed before any development can take place but I am(hopefully) quietly confident that things are moving in the right direction. I thinkChurch House Farm will take a little longer as there is more preliminary workrequired (eg moving the farmstead and dealing with the footpath diversion)”.

CLIFTON’S STALWART POST LADY DIESMary Lydia Ennion, who died at the age of 94 last month wasClifton’s post lady, for over 30 years until her retirement in 1990.Known affectionately as Bunty to most residents, she was afamiliar and popular figure in the village, filling in football couponsfor people whose eyesight was too poor to do it, deliveringprescriptions and newspapers.

THE SHELSLEYS GARDENING CLUB by Norah TompkinsonThe gardening Club has a programme of four illustrated talks in the spring andanother four in the autumn. These talks are not always on strictly gardeningtopics, but rather on themes relating to the countryside or indeed to plants inforeign countries. Our aim is to produce a varied programme of talks that willappeal to all who live in the country and are interested in plants. It is notnecessary to be a gardener to come and enjoy our meetings.

CLIFTON SCHOOL WINS LOCAL FIVE A SIDE

“We were all delighted when our girls’ five-a-side football team won a localtournament. Being part of a cluster of schools gives our children the opportunityto compete against other local teams – in this tournament we met Broadwas inthe semi-final and then went on to beat Grimley in the final!The girls were presented with the winners’ shield, by Rebecca Lloyd, a formerChantry pupil and member of the England under 17 football team. They playedtenaciously and made the best of every chance and their tiptop defending meantthat very few goals were scored against them.”

CLIFTON W.I. CELEBRATES 50 YEARS“Our February meeting was well attended and our speaker Julia Goodfellow-Smith gave a talk on Love Food Hate Waste. The talk was fun and informativewe all gave ideas on how we avoided wasting food and what could be donewith leftovers.”

ANYONE FOR CROQUET? The BROADWAS CROQUET CLUB plays on all Tuesday and Wednesdayafternoons (weather permitting) from about 1.30pm until 5pm. The club is alsoopen to members on other weekdays, Sundays and in the evening. The clubhas over 50 members of all abilities. Club days are friendly doubles play butwe also compete very successfully in club competitions, regionally andnationally for those who want to test their skills. Twice we have won nationalteam titles. Wisdom sometimes comes from an unlikely source!

At a time of year when the people of Ŵales will be celebrating St. David’s Dayand all things Welsh, it may seem strange to quote a poet more renowned forhis excesses than for moral judgement. After all, another well known AngloWelsh poet, R.S. Thomas who spent many years serving as a rector in ruralWelsh communities while writing acclaimed poetic verses, might surely havebeen a more suitable person to quote!

But no, for me it is the prayer of the Rev. Eli Jenkins in Under Milk Wood whichcomes to mind whenever I think of Dylan Thomas and I quote...

“We are not wholly bad or goodWho live our lives under Milk WoodAnd thou O Lord would be the first I’m sure,To see our good sides and not our worst “

Many a rogue and even a villain often possess some redeeming features whichsuggest that there is always room for a change of heart and indeed that doessometimes happen thankfully!Therefore we should not surely judge or condemn a man or woman as that isnot ours to do.After all, forgiveness is at the very heart of the Christian Faith.Nigel Roberts

MOTHERING SUNDAY AT ST. KENELM’SCOME at 10.00 for 10.30am on 15th March for our Mothering Sunday Service.We have modified and shortened the Family Service so that children will haveseparate activities during the talk and hopefully will not find the service too longin future!

We also want to encourage people of all ages who would enjoy an informalnon-communion, more easy-going service. So we are changing the name too.We have also put the time later (10.30am) and are having coffee beforehand sothat those with young children won’t have such a rush.

Please spread the word and encourage young and old alike to give it a try.Hope to see you there either on Mothering Sunday or one 3rd Sunday in thefuture (always the 3rd Sunday of the month).

LOWER SAPEY NEWS with Marion WestSomehow it is always a delightful surprise to see themasses of snowdrops making their wonderful springdisplays. St Bartholomew’s garden looks amazing!

January was a rather mixed month of sadness andjoy. Peter Yates passed away after a long illnessand will be missed throughout the village, especiallyof course by Jean, his wife. They had enjoyed a verylong and happy marriage.

Towards the end of January Colin and BarbaraRaybould hosted a splendid party at the Golf Clubto celebrate Colin’s 80th birthday. This was a brilliantparty with all their family and friends in attendance and was hugely enjoyed byall.

Church duties this month will not include flowers as of course it is Lent.Cleaning will be taken care of by Pat Savage.We are hoping to welcome as many of our village friends as possible, for hotcross buns and coffeeAt 11am on Good Friday morning (3rd April) so watch for the posters and markyour diaries!

Ladies’ bible study will be with Marion West on Tuesday 10th March at 2pm. And finally we shall be expecting the mobile library on 20th March.

PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL’S LOTTERY BIDClifton School is asking for pledges of support for their Lottery bid for a Schooland Community Garden to be created in 2015/16. The project will help to ensurethat the children develop healthy eating habits for a lifetime.

The school already has a children’s kitchen, which is used both in schooltimeand for extra-curricular activities, and want to take this one step further givingthe children the opportunity to grow and cook alongside the local community,And, by involving the community they could ensure the crops were harvestedright through the summer.

As a Green Flag Eco-school they are keen to use as many recycled materialsas possible and having the new garden close to the school building would, theyhope, mean more rainwater collection for use irrigating the new beds. They alsohave a plan for building a greenhouse from plastic drinks bottles!

RURAL REELS PROGRAMME IN CLIFTONThe Rural Reels film programme for the coming season offers some excellentfilms at Clifton Village Hall. TEME VALLEY WILDLIFE - MARCH

For my wildlife words for March I have chosen to highlight a Worcestershiresurvey that we in the Teme Valley Wildlife Group have been asked to help withto find and record the county’s oldest trees. The Ancient Tree Project is currentlycoordinated by the Worcestershire Biological Recording Centre and they have2,500 trees on their register so far. However, they believe that there are stillplenty of unrecorded trees in the county and they encourage anyone who knowsof a big old tree to let them know about it. Our part of the county is rich in treesof all kinds, and tucked away in hedgerows, old copses and field corners theremay well be some “veteran” trees in hiding!

An ancient tree is one that is stands out as being much greater in size than theaverage. It has a wide trunk and a large girth, looks gnarled and may showsigns of decay, with hollows inside the trunk, loose bark or missing or deadlimbs, giving it a so-called “stag’s-head” appearance. Because oaks are verylong-lived, they are the quintessential veteran tree. It is said to take 300 yearsfor an oak to reach maturity, 300 years for it to enjoy its prime, then a further 300years to decline, until coming to a collapse, as our local massive tree, theMawley Oak has recently done. An oak of interest to the register would need agirth of 3.9 metres.

The other obvious old tree in the landscape is the yew, Worcestershire’s oldesttree, a yew, is in Knighton-on-Teme’s churchyard. The register is interested inany yew with a girth greater than 3 metres. Other trees are less long-lived andso reach smaller girths, despite being old for their particular species. Sweetchestnut, beech, ash and sycamore would be counted on the register if theirgirths were over 3 metres, whilst holly, field maple and common alder wouldonly need to be over 2 metres in girth.

Old trees provide a habitat for many other species, a thousand types of insectmay live in an old oak, and then there are birds, mammals and fungi to count,too. Historically, they link communities today with their predecessors whoshaped the landscape, and culturally, they attract names and myths and legendsspecific to their location.
