Jamie Nunn

to get the team a win.”

Nunn has done a good

job in holding down the ace

slot on the mound for the

Mountaineers. His record is 9-

3 thus far with an Earned Run

Average of 3.12. He has

appeared in 12 games for

Appalachian, starting each

one.

He also leads the team

in most categories, including

innnings pitched (83.2) and

strikeouts (69).

He says he hopes to

keep things going for the

Mountaineers as they

approach the Southern

Conference Tournament and

hopefully lead ASU into the

NCAA Regionals.

“We have talked about

some of those things,” he said.

“Obviously we would like to

win the regular season in the

Southern Conference and it

would definitely help to win

the tournament.

“Right now we’re

more concerned with just win-

ning every game that we play

and I’m trying to do my best

every time Coach gives me the

baseball.”

A junior, Nunn will

have another year of eligibility

left with the Mountaineers. If

he continues to improve he

would likely be looked upon

favorably by major league

baseball teams for their ama-

teur draft next year. But it

could also happen this season.

“You can’t really look

at that kind of stuff and start

speculating,” he said. “You

just have to continue working

as hard as you have in the past

and hope that those kind of

things will fall in place. I have

to focus on getting one player

out at a time and not let any-

thing affect my rhythm.

By Kevin Pearman

In a recent

showdown, the East

Forsyth Lady Eagles

defeated crosstown rival

the Glenn Lady Cats in

a barn burner, 9-8.

The first two

innings were scoreless

when East center fielder

Kiersten Berrier drew a

walk and in feilder Julia

Barnes hit a base hit

double driving Berrier

in to take a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Cats

the top of the fourth

when first baseman

Ashley Hurd hit a single

driving in right fielder

Elizabeth Toler.

In the bottom of

the fourth Eagles first

lowed by a single by

Burton driving Stilling

home to trim the Eagles

lead to 3-2, singles by

second baseman Tracy

Haynes and right fielder

Elizabeth Toler and a

grand slam by pitcher

Glenn's defense

would come up strong

in the bottom of the

fifth as East came up

scoreless in their half of

the inning. The Eagles

in return retired the

Lady Cats in the top of

the sixth and in the bot-

tom of the sixth, they

too would put up five

runs as in fielder Julia

Barnes hit a double

driving in second base-

man Abbey Lamendola

and third baseman

Amanda Trivette to

make the score 6-5

Glenn.

The scoring

would continue in the

a double

driving in

In the bottom of

the seventh Lady Eagle

of the

Peidmont-

confer-

ence

champi-

onship.

Despite

hitting the

game win-

ning home

run, Kaydo said that she

was real nervous when

she was up at the plate

at bat.

''I was nervous

because I had two

strikes already and I

was just hoping that I

wouldn't strike out,” she

said. Kaydo went on by

saying that she was very

happy when she lifted

the solo homer.

''When I hit it

over I was real happy

and so were my team-

mates because not only

did we defeat Glenn but

we also won a share of

the conference champi-

onship, so everybody

was happy.''

With the win

the Lady Eagles now

stand at (16-4) overall

and finish the confer-

ence regular season

with a (10-2) record and

will begin play in the

Peidmont-Triad 4A con-

ference tournament later

on this week and Kaydo

says that their win on

Friday will give them a

big boost of confidence

as they head into the

tournament and play-

offs.

“It definitely

gives us an edge

because we clinched a

share of our conference

title plus we finished

the regular season off

with a win so it defi-

nitely gives us a boost,''

said Mike Muse, Lady

Eagles head coach. who

says that winning last

Friday night will also

help them out seeding

wise for the NCHSAA

softball playoffs which

will begin next week.

''It will give us

a couple of home games

heading into the state

playoffs next week and

having a home field

advantage is always a

great thing to have

especially when your in

the state playoffs.''

Congratulations to the

Lady Eagles on clinch-

ing a share of the

Peidmont-Triad 4A con-

ference regular season

championship and we

wish them the best of

luck as they participate

in their conference tour-

nament this week and in

the NCHSAA state

playoffs this week.

At the time his

when he began to take

“My father’s

said. “I was a backup

ing with 105 tackles, six

forced fumbles, three

fumble recoveries and

an interception as a sen-

ior.

At Pikeville, an

NAII program, he will

be playing alongside

cousin Carlos once

again.

“They’re talking

me to safety,” said

Gregory, who stands 5-

Rams capture title, prepare for playoffsFrom Staff Reports

Petersburg, VA – On the

third and final day of competition at

the 2013 CIAA Spring Sports

Festival, Winston-Salem State

University defeated Chowan

University 9-1 in the championship

game to claim their third consecutive

conference title at the Whaley

Colbert Field on the campus of VSU.

The Rams finished 3-0 during the

tournament in order to hoist the

championship plaque.

WSSU wasted no time get-

ting on the scoreboard with three

runs in the first inning. Chowan went

three up and three down in the top of

the first. The Rams produced three

hits and three runs in the bottom of

the first, including a RBI double

from Tyler Hickernell.

Both teams went scoreless in

the second and third innings. The

Hawks earned a run in the fourth off

a RBI single from Evan Holton. The

hit from Holton scored Brandon

Mack from third base. The inning

came to a close with one run, two

hits, an error, and two left on base.

Unfortunately, that would be the

only run generated by Chowan in the

contest.

Winston-Salem State

responded with two runs in the fifth

and four runs in the sixth to secure a

victory. Neither team scored after the

sixth inning. First baseman Aaron

Jones had clutch day at the plate for

WSSU with four hits off five at-bats,

three runs scored and a RBI.

Hickernell controlled the

game on the mound and picked up

the win. He pitched eight innings

with five strikeouts, only allowing

six hits and one run scored en route

to being named Tournament MVP.

Seth Mahaffey checked in for the

save in the ninth. He struck out two,

walked one, and had one ground out.

The Rams earn an automatic

bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs

and await the tournament seeding

announcement for their opponent.
