5 STUDY TIPS TO CURB EXAM-

    PREPARATION STRESS

(NewsUSA) - For college students, the stress of examsis an anxiety-filled final hurdle to overcome before fullyrelaxing and enjoying the long-deserved break. These

exams can be intimidating -- especially for freshmenwith an advanced workload -- which is why stressmanagement is key.

Use these five stress-relief tips to help ease exam-taking tensions as casual study time becomes cramtime.

    * Watch a funny movie. Theres nothing like comicrelief and laughter to get your mind off that chemistryfinal. Need an idea for a great college-aged comedy?Check out The Pool Boys, available on DVD, Blu-Ray,streaming and digital download from Seven Arts.

The DVD and Blu-Ray include special features that youcan save for further study breaks, including interviews andommentary. For a preview, check out the trailer (rated R)

    t www.ThePoolBoysMovie.com.

    * Hit the gym. Try to schedule regular workouts aroundour blocks of exam studying time to help keep stressn check. If you are on a sports team, you may still haveractices during exam time, but if not, make plans witheammates to do some conditioning. Go for a run, shootoops or lift some weights.

If youre on your own for exercise and the weatherutside is frightful, try an indoor dance or yoga class, orn exercise video or DVD that you can do in your room.

    * Have a snack. Its hard to concentrate if your stomachs growling, but hold off on the celebratory drinks untilfter exams are over. Instead, have some energy-

oosting snacks on hand while studying, such as trail mixr energy bars. Stay hydrated, too.

    * Get some air. Does your exam stress mean hours inthe library or lab? Go out and walk around the building,or around the block. Clearing your head and getting youreyes away from the screen can work wonders.

    * Avoid all-nighters. Sometimes an all-night studysession is inevitable, but dont underestimate the value ofsleep in keeping exam stress under control. If you havemultiple exams in the same week, several days with littlesleep will leave you even more stressed.

Dont overdo the caffeine, and try to plan your sleepas you plan your exam study schedule. If you are a nightperson who studies more effectively from 10 p.m. to 2a.m., make that work for you, but factor in a mid-morningnap the next day.

    SOCIAL CHANGE: A NEW YEARS

    RESOLUTION FOR 2012

(NewsUSA) - Political unrest, environmental crises andeconomic challenges on a global scale practically defined2011. The Arab Spring ousted three iron-fisted rulers,a deadly earthquake led to mass radiation exposure inJapan and Occupy Wall Street emerged to be a historical, internationally united protest. The year 2011 seized theidea of social change and ran with it.

Will that momentum continue throughout 2012? Allsigns point to yes, and Walden Universitys recent SocialChange Impact Report confirms the trend. The resultsindicate the importance of social change and reveal thatpeople are taking action now and will continue to do soin the future. The survey shows that more than nine in 10Americans (92 percent) have taken action to engage inpositive social change in the past year and that more thanhalf of them are committed to engaging in future positive

change as individuals acting on their own or in informalgroups.

Around the world, people are thinking globally andacting locally, notes Jonathan Kaplan, president ofWalden University. People have a strong belief in theirown power to effect positive social change and make adifference.

The Social Change Impact Report also states thatnearly nine in 10 adults in the U.S. (88 percent) believethe best way to have an impact on the world is to makechange at the local level. At a time when many familiesand organizations are vulnerable, and fewer resourcesare available to support the socioeconomic challengesthat exist, individuals now more than ever have theopportunity to make a difference in their communities andbeyond.

Walden University offers five practical tips to encouragecitizens to participate in 2012.

    1. Think about what kind of positive social changeyou want to effect.

    2. Assess what specific skills or expertise you canoffer to help address a particular need.

    3. Connect your passion and skills with yourcommitment to serve.

    4. Research ways your workplace can get involvedin the community.

    5. Use a resource that can match you with anorganization that needs your skills.

    PROGRAM TURNS DROUGHT-RAVAGED

    VILLAGES INTO GARDENS OF EDEN

(NewsUSA) - In the Horn of Africa, barren landscapesand dirt fields surround large riverbeds that are totally dry.Herds of goats and camels, tired and emaciated, walkthrough parched lands in search of food and water. Itsthe worst drought the region has seen in 60 years.

As ChildFund International continues its droughtemergency operations across this region, it also remains

focused on long-term development projects aimed aminimizing food crises.

In Kenyas Turkana region, the Food for Assets program, operated by ChildFund International in conjunction with

the U.N. World Food Program, is producing crops indesert.

In the vegetable gardens, women tend spinach, tomatoes, green peppers, okra, watermelons, kale, maizand cowpeas, said Anne Lynam Goddard, presidenand CEO of ChildFund. Its amazing to see how smarfarming practices have transformed this community. Inthe midst of drought, weve discovered the Garden oEden -- its green everywhere!

Six communities in the region are involved in the Foodfor Assets program, which sustains 3,000 households byteaching pastoralist communities techniques for irrigationand farming. The program provides families with foodand goods in exchange for their work to build irrigation

    systems and community gardens.

Improved access to water for both humans and livestockincreases crop production, reduces environmentaldegradation and improves pasture for livestock. In areasthat lack access to permanent rivers, people are taught tuse special pans to catch water that is used to grow cropslike maize and sorghum.

Long reliant on food aid, people enrolled in the Foodfor Assets program receive their food rations for one yeawhile they learn to utilize their new skills to provide foodfor themselves. Food aid is then reserved for the mosvulnerable.

Food for Assets is not an emergency relief effort,Goddard said. Its a long-term development intervention

that helps reduce a communitys vulnerability to futurdroughts. Were strengthening communities and givingpeople the resources and training they need to rely onthemselves.

ITS TAX TIME. ARE YOU TAKING ALL THE

    DEDUCTIONS ALLOWED?

(NewsUSA) - Heres a scary number to keep in mind iyoure just getting your tax receipts together: $1 billion.

No, its not the amount that Warren Buffets secretary-- let alone Buffet personally -- paid the IRS in her lifetime. Its how much taxpayers approximately wind up forfeitingeach year to the government because of self-inflictedtax errors like: failing to claim tax credits and deductionslegally due them; choosing the wrong filing status; andnot bothering to send in a return at all.

Well, guess what? A slew of recent changes in the taxlaw wont make things any easier this year.

At a time when taxpayers are hurting, it really doesnmake sense to leave money on the table, says ElainSmith, master tax advisor at H&R Block, the giant taxpreparation firm (www.hrblock.com).

Here are some things -- good and bad -- to watch oufor:

    * Casualty losses. Hurricane Irene. Midwest tornadoes.Texas wildfires. Mother Nature went a little nutty last year,

and -- if the president declared your area a disaster -- youcould be able to claim your loss as an itemized deductionon your 2011 return or on an amended 2010 one.

    * Reduction in the Energy Savings Home ImprovemenCredit. At its height, this was a 30-percent credit on thcost of high-efficiency windows, furnaces, central Aand the like. Its now 10 percent. Plus, the maximumlifetime credit went from $1,500 to $500. That means iyou spent a total of $5,000 on IRS-approved upgrades in2011, says Smith, you can claim a $500 credit. Unless, that is, youd already maxed out in prior years.

    * Expiration of the tax credit for hybrid cars. If youbought a Prius last year, you did so without the feds help. However, the green cars du jour -- i.e., the electric-driv

Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf -- will score you a $7,500credit. And there are goodies for things like conversionkits, too.

price you paid for stocks to reduce thetaxes owed on capital gains. Or at least thegovernment fears that was happening. Solook out for a mandatory statement fromyour broker reporting your cost basis

for stocks and securities held in taxableaccounts -- as opposed to 401(k)s andIRAs -- that you sold in 2011.

    DRINKING WATER: AN INVALUABLE

    RESOURCE TAKEN FOR GRANTED

(NewsUSA) - You turn on the tap, and

ater comes out. Period. Safe, plentifulnd affordable drinking water is one ofur nations most precious resources andomething most of us take for granted.

But what if you turned the tap andothing happened, or if the water yourank made you sick?

While pouring a glass of water mayeem simple, before it arrives at your tap

there is a complex process of collecting, storing, treating and distributing that helpsnsure its availability and quality. In fact,

water utilities implement comprehensivewater management plans to ensure thatadequate amounts of drinking water areavailable. These include conservation

    and reuse, reclamation and sourcingstrategies.

Drinking water supplied by utilities isalways treated to remove contaminantsand harmful micro-organisms. Thattreatment process typically consists of

clarification (to remove dirt and otherparticles), filtration (to remove evensmaller particles) and disinfection (to killbacteria and most viruses). The wateris then delivered to residential andcommercial customers via an extensivepipe network.

Drinking water utilities are committedto protecting public health and constantlymonitoring and reassessing their methodsfor treating water to ensure its quality. Inpart, this is due to changing governmentregulations, which periodically alterwater quality standards. In addition, theymay undertake other forms of treatmentnot expressly required to comply withregulations in order to ensure thatdrinking water meets and often exceedsthe standards and needs of localcommunities.

For example, they may seek to removetrace compounds that are not currentlyregulated, and to enhance the aestheticquality of the water.

Drinking water utilities carry out theseservices while also managing costs andminimizing environmental impacts oftheir processes; they are committed tokeeping drinking water affordable. Waterutilities and other stakeholders investmore than $12 million each year in theWater Research Foundation to sponsorresearch that enables water utilities, public

health agencies and other professionalsto provide safe and affordable drinkingwater to the public.

So the next time you pour a glass ofwater from the tap, take a moment tohonor the commitment and significant

investment made to ensure the quality ofthat water.
