Limitations with Vision for Near, Distance, and Social Activities:
A Comparison Among Three Models of Presbyopia-Correcting
IOLs
Trevor Woodhams, MD
Financial Disclosure:Alcon sponsored the study and provided statistical and presentation support.
Purpose
To evaluate limitations with vision for near, distance, and social activities, as reported by patients with bilateral aspheric apodized diffractive multifocal IOLs (IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOLs, Alcon), bilateral aspheric accommodative IOLs (Crystalens AO; Bausch & Lomb), or bilateral spherical accommodative IOLs (Crystalens HD; Bausch & Lomb).
Methods A prospective, patient-masked,
multicenter study › patients with bilateral cataracts› <1.0 D of corneal astigmatism
Randomized to receive implantation of bilateral multifocal IOLs, bilateral AO IOLs, or bilateral HD IOLs
3-mo interim results

Endpoints Evaluated
Preoperatively and at 3 months postoperative, a validated questionnaire (Cataract TyPE) was distributed
Composites scores of questions about various activities were used to assess limitations with uncorrected:› near-vision function (5 questions) › distance-vision function (7 questions)› vision for social activities (5 questions)
Response options ranged from 0 (no limitation) to 4 (extreme limitation), or could be marked as not applicable

Conclusions Three months after bilateral implantation of
presbyopia-correcting IOLs, limitations with uncorrected vision for:› Near distance were least for the IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOL
group, followed by the HD IOL group, and greatest for the AO IOL group
› Far distance were least for the IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOL group, followed by the AO IOL group, and greatest for the HD IOL group
› Social activity were least for the IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOL group, followed by the AO IOL group, and greatest for the HD IOL group
