FROM THE EAST Greetings Brethren, The brethren of Ken- dall Lodge have been carrying out our du- ties in the usual tradi- tions this year and as we approach the time of presenting officers for the next Masonic year we should be mindful of the necessity of mak- ing wise decisions in electing those who will lead us into the future. Yes, this time will soon be upon us. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss two public ceremonies which we as masons perform in the manner set for us in our history and laws: Ma- sonic Burial Service and the Laying of the Corner- stone. Due to the time and space constrains I will discuss the Masonic Burial Service with which we are all familiar. The Lightfoot’s Manuel of the Lodge copyright 1934 has extensive commentary concerning this an- cient ceremony. “The proper discharge of this duty insures respect to the mortal remains of the de- ceased brother, whatever may have been his fail- ings, and affords an opportunity for the happy recol- lection of his virtues, giving testimony of the esti- mation in which they were held. It also serves to remind those who participate in it of their own mor- tality, and of the importance of being prepared for Death, which must come upon nations and societies. Those observed by Masons have an ancient origin and refer to one of the most important traditions of the Order”. This is but a portion of the commentary and explanation of this important Masonic ceremo- ny. Recently I was fortunate to have traveled to Austin Lodge #12 and attended the Master Mason graded March 2015 Kendall Masonic Lodge No. 897 AF & AM 897 East Blanco Road • Boerne, Texas 78006 Degree conferred by that lodge. This is the same lodge room where my father had been raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason back in the 60’s .This time gave me an opportunity of reflection in considering my father as a brother linked in the traditions of our order. It was also a time to reflect upon my gratitude toward this lodge in their extend- ing the formalities of my father’s Masonic graveside service on that rainy day back in 1995 at the Capitol Memorial Gardens in North Austin. Our family was sad and grief stricken but uplifted by the gathering of the masons from Austin Lodge #12 who joined us in remembering his virtues and at the same time giving us an opportunity to reflect upon our own mortality. As our master’s Prayer relates to us, “man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. Yet, O Lord! Have compassion on the children of thy creation; administer them com- fort in time of trouble, and save them with an ever- lasting salvation! “ Let us make the best of our time together. FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren,

The meal for the MarchStated Meeting will beprovided by Boerne OES#200.

Great ArchitectThe phrase “Great Architect of the Universe“came into Masonry in 1723 from Christian the-ologians and preachers. Saint Thomas Aquinaswrote in his 1265 Summa Theologica, "God,Who is the first principle of all things, may becompared to things created as the architect asto things designed. John Calvin, of theProtestant Reformation repeatedly used thepseudonym "Supreme Architect", "the GreatArchitect", and the "the Architect of the Uni-verse" when referring to Deity. He likewisereferred to nature as "the architecture of theUniverse".

Puritan theologian Cotton Mather called God"the Divine Architect" in his writing of 1684.

These were all before Speculative Masonry.

Reverend Doctor James Anderson was a Pres-byterian minister who was a student of Calvin'steaching and Puritan writings. Anderson'sConstitution of 1723 was republished in thecolonies by Benjamin Franklin in 1734, whichgave it a wide distribution among Freemasonson both sides of the Atlantic.

In Keeping with the Christian theologians whopreceded him, Rev. Anderson referred to theSupreme Being as "The Great Architect of theUniverse", and the name has been used in Free-masonry ever since....." (Peter Champion2013)
