A HANDY LIST OF ACADEMIC TERMSDEGREES: Also known as “Bachelor’s degree” or “undergraduate degree”, this is the first level of study at a university, often a three (general) or four year (honours) program that prepares you for your future profession or the next step of your academic career.
MAJOR: The primary area of study within a degree program, a major involves intensive focus on a particular discipline.
MINOR: An optional secondary field of study that can be related to or different from your major, a minor is usually selected after you begin your studies.
OPTIONS: Often referred to as “mini minors,” options are a prescribed set of courses in a discipline outside of your degree. These specific areas of study can be completed alongside almost any undergraduate degree program. A unique focus to your degree provides you with a distinct advantage in the career of your choice.
SPECIALIZATIONS: Distinguish your degree by adding a specialization and gain deeper understanding of your chosen discipline. Adding a specialization shows future employers or graduate schools that you’re focused and interested in becoming an expert in your field.
POST-GRADUATE CERTIFICATES: These certificate programs are designed to complement the skills and knowledge acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree to boost your professional skills for in-demand fields.

“Before my undergraduate studies at Trent, I spent one year in ESL Foundations for University I and II. During my ESL studies, I significantly developed my English skills and local social network as well. The Trent-ESL program did make a major difference, which has laid a solid foundation for my undergraduate journey. More than language improvement, my ESL studies also shaped a smooth pathway for my degree studies, by preparing me well for the academic requirements in Canadian institutions.”

“I chose Trent because it offers the best scholarships for international students. As a transfer student from a university in the U.S., I was in a narrow niche to qualify for a scholarship in Canada. That is when I discovered Trent’s Global Citizen Scholarship which allowed me to return to school.”
JUAN URZUA from Mexico
“I wanted to study media in a comfortable, quiet place and Trent was the best choice. Since arriving here from Nigeria, I have met people from all different nationalities and have built communication skills, which will be important both while studying media and when I’m in my future career.”
COMFORT ADEKANYE from Nigeria
“One of my favorite things about Trent is the multicultural student community. The diversity in backgrounds and cultures is an impressive characteristic of Trent that you cannot find anywhere else. I have been able to meet new friends from all over the world, explore their culture and traditions through regional groups, and be introduced to many new perspectives.”
HANG NGUYEN from Vietnam
“Trent University was the only university in Canada where I could combine my study of Forensic Science with Information Systems or any other major, which has allowed me to create a unique educational focus. The crime scene house, wet labs and dry labs were also key factors that drew me to Trent, giving me a practical approach to my future career.”
CORALYNE CRASTO from Kuwait
“At Trent you really get what you see. The community here is gorgeous and could really create wonderful memories. The diversity at Trent allows any international student enjoy their life and make friends here. The services at Trent are also creating a friendly environment for students to get ready for their future, and I do believe Trent is a good choice for students who have dreams and passion.”
