by Nancy Lucarelli The first thing you notice when you walk into The Inte- rior Design Studio is that it’s not just a studio anymore. And that’s exactly the experi- ence owners Julie Douglass and Katie Heinz hope you will have. Over the past three years, the two sisters have gradually expanded JK Gift Shop, a daz- zling boutique situated at the front of their studio. It has evolved into a sumptuous showroom of sleek modern furniture, witty and unique gift items, and sophisticated, edgy home accents. Katie explains, “When we opened three years ago, our goal was to bring something new, fresh, modern and youthful to the Historic Dis- trict. “And at a good price point,” Julie adds. The sisters’ expertise in interior design has edged the business upward since its inception. Katie, an interior designer, points out new col- ors for the home, “Navy is making a comeback.” Julie adds, “Earth tones are giving way to pale grays and soft yellows.” A look around the store reveals Katie and Julie have an uncanny ability for spot- ting trends. They travel to a number of gift shows several times a year to bring back fashion forward items. “We attend shows in New York, Atlanta and Chicago,” Julie explains, “and each city offers a different perspective. We buy only the best, meaning Medina County residents can shop the trends from around the country right here at our store.” Speaking of trends, Julie points to Outdoor Living as the latest. At a recent gift show the sisters discovered beautiful area indoor/out- door rugs which are now for sale at their store. “The rugs are made from premium quality recycled polypropy- lene straws,” Julie says, “in great colors and amazing patterns and they’re available at a very affordable price!” They also carry Firelights, a line of gel-burning outdoor candles that are hugely pop- ular with their customers. And they are very excited about a new line of wall décor from Danielson Designs. Made in the USA, the signs feature whimsical quotes and stylish artwork. “Danielson Designs started as a husband and wife opera- tion and grew to employ an entire small town in Col- orado,” says Julie, “It’s a great story and we’re thrilled to carry their creative designs in our store.” The Interior Design Stu- dio/ JK Gift Shop has its own great story — a creative jewel in the Historic District with a well-edited, youthful collec- tion of beautiful gifts, furni- ture, and home décor offered at affordable price points. You see them on most week-ends and whenever school isout: Little girls in frilly partydresses and some with prettyhats and even little boys incrisp dress shirts. They walkexcitedly beside their parentsas they make their waythrough Medina’s Historic Dis-trict. They are about to stepinto a different world at MissMolly’s Tea Room & Gift Shop.

“Our goal is to offer cus-tomers a break from the hus-tle-bustle of their daily lives. Sitback, relax and enjoy thecalming, cozy atmosphere of atime gone by in our Victoriantea room,” says Ed Wright, whoowns the business with hiswife Dinah.

People bring their guestsfrom all over the world likeEurope, Australia and Japan todine or enjoy afternoon tea inthe spacious, elegant tearoom.

A meal or Formal AfternoonTea is filled with deliciousanticipation as customerswonder which gorgeous teapotand cup and saucer will be setin front of them. Sets aremixed and matched, and arebeautifully decorated. “Muchof our china was made in Eng-land,” Ed explains, “but wealso purchase china frommany corners of the world. We’re always interested inacquiring private collections ofteapots and cups & saucers.”

The teapots offer exquisitearomas of freshly steeped tea.Miss Molly’s loose leaf teas arespecially blended by profes-sionals who have spent theirlives learning how to maximizethe flavor in high quality loosetea. But tea is certainly not theonly item on Miss Molly’smenu.

Customers have manyfavorites which include thesavory chicken salad in deli-cate puff pastry, the creamyChicken Divan, the incompa-rable Strawberry Pretzel Salador the succulent Quiche. Aspecial feature is served everyday such as Torte Milanese,White Garlic Lasagna, TheAcropolis, many differentcrepes and numerous otherunique dishes. “On manyweekends and especially dur-ing Historic District events weoffer something for theheartier appetite” says Ed,referring to the many malecustomers who frequent MissMolly’s, “Pot roast withmashed potatoes and gravy!”

And then there is the lus-cious Lemon Tea Bread thataccompanies several of the

entrees and is offered for salein the gift shop. “We held acontest many years ago to findthe best tea bread recipe,” saysEd, “and the Lemon Tea Breadwas by far and away the best!We also make outstandingAmericanized scones everyday (traditional British sconesare very different). Even ourBritish guests comment onhow delicious they are. We fillthem with cranberries, black-berries, cherries and manyother fruits.”

The spacious tea room is anexcellent venue for specialevents. “We host parties of allkinds, including bridal andbaby showers, graduation par-ties, children’s tea parties, birthday parties, weddingreceptions, church events andmore.”

After dining, guests maketheir way to Miss Molly’ssplendid gift shop to pay theirbill and shop the many uniqueofferings, where by populardemand a limited supply ofMedina Gazebo ornaments arenow in stock. But the biggestnews is the gift shop will carrybeautiful china to celebratethe Royal Wedding of PrinceWilliam and Kate Middleton atthe end of April. “Availabilitywill be limited,” says Ed, “Cus-tomers are encouraged to callnow to reserve pieces.”

Miss Molly’s Tea Rom & GiftShop is located at 140 W.Washington Street in Medina’sHistoric District. Reservationsare suggested: 330-725-6830and more information is avail-able at www.missmollys.net oron Twitter or Facebook.
