TheindianArmyarrivereadytosettlebeforeabigbattlethenextday.daulatKhanservingwiththe59thscinderifles,meetsNormanmanley,ablackBritishsoldierwiththeroyalArtilleryandrecountsaletterhehasjustreceivedabouthisfriendmantasinghwhosavedthelifeofhiswoundedLieutenant,butwashimselfwoundedanddiedinhospital.Normantellshisownstoryofhowhewaspromotedtobeing

Theproject,whichaimstovisitfiftyschoolsacrossLondonbetween2014-17isfor2-4year5and/oryear6classes.EachparticipatingschoolfirstreceivesanartefactshandlingsessiondeliveredbytheNationalArmymuseuminwhichtheytryonuniformsandhandlearangeofobjectsfromweaponstoletters,helmetsshatteredbyshells,tomagazines.Nextisavisitfromafirstworldwarsoldier,eitherfromtheindianArmyortheBwir,andthenadaymakingTrenchBrotherpuppetswithartistsfromtheLittleAngelTheatre.supportingthesevisitsisuseoftheTrenchBrotherson-lineEducationZoneofferingcontextualbackgroundinformationtothefirstworldwarwithanemphasisonethnicminoritycommonwealthforcestogetherwithover90newlycommissionedlessonplans,activities

anddownloadsineverycurricularsubjectforteacherstouse,mappedtothe2014curriculum.

Eachschoolisgivenaspecificsoldiertoresearchandanon-linetoolkitorquestionnairetohelptheirresearch,afterwhicheverychildwritesaletterhomefromtheirsoldier.Theselettersareeditedintooneletterperschool/soldierandthenthechildrensetthelettertomusicinacompositionsessionwithaprofessionalcomposer.Asfaraspossible,arangeofcomposersareinvolvedsothatattheendoftheproject,fiftynewLettersongswillhavebeencreatedinarangeofmusicalstyles.

Thefinalphaseistheperformance,whichschoolsprepareforbylearningsongsfromthenewmusictheatrepiecebyrenownedjazz

composerJulianJosephandawardwinningcomposerrichardTaylor,aswellastheirownLettersong.Theproductionisputtogetherineachschoolinonlyoneday:anactionpackedmorninginwhichtheHmdTmusicteamofdirector,musicdirector,stagemanager,professionalsingersandteamofvolunteerpuppeteersfromtheLittleAngelTheatrearrivewithaset,costumesandpropstorehearsewiththestudentsandtheirpuppetsbeforegivingtheperformanceyouareabouttosee.
