Trench Town
Named Trench Pen, by William Power Trench, an Irish Immigrant of the 18th century.
Trench Pen became a squatter
settlement during the 1930s. From 1940 -49 the Colonial Government
under Central Housing Authority (CHA) developed Trench Town as model township project.
Amenities included : housing, rental, social housing, schools, a theatre (The Ambassador), a park (Vin Lawrence Park), YMCA and YWCA, health clinic and fire station.

A lot of the houses which were created, whilst establishing one of Jamaica’s first model communal community( before its garrisonization) were homes to merchants and Business owners who operated the businesses and directed commerce which happened in down town Kingston’s shops and port.
It was built to be admired, designed as a self contained area of residence which had its own schools, churches, police and fire station, clinic and theatre among other enviable amenities. The up-town of the then contemporary Kingston a first of its kind in a line of model communities.
Trench town was no mistake as it was designed to house Jamaica’s elite before the mid 1900, strategically situated on the fringe of Kingston’s down town business district.
By the 1970’s these residences were known as the ‘Government Yards’ of Trench Town.
In the early 1970s the fragmentation of
Trench Town began by the two political parties.
It’s Role in the History of Reggae Music
Trench Town is home to the communities of Wilton Gardens [Rema], Federal Gardens, Arnette Gardens [Jungle], Havana and Buckers. These communities have been systematically split along political lines establishing garrisons which guarantees a party a particular amount of votes as well as a seat in parliament
Trench Town is known in Popular Culture due to its numerous contributions to music and sports. Numerous Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae musicians.
Most notably though was Bob Marley, who spent much of his youth in a "government yard" on first street, known to us as ‘Culture Yard’, where he penned some of his earlier hits.
