Real and lasting change Our objective for the new year The year 2015 was one of FUF’s finest— a year we all can be proud of—thanks to: 1. All the great work in our programs; 2. Our new strategic plan, which aims to solve our lack of trees; 3. The tremendous energy and dedication of our volunteers, donors and supporting organizations. As we prepare for the rest of the holidays and the new year, I want to thank you for your support in 2015. I sincerely appreciate the dedication and commitment of our commu- nity, board, and staff. I’m especially grateful that FUF plans to take on more policy work, with the intention of creating real and lasting change to our urban landscape. This change most likely will have to be voted on by the City’s electorate, so that San Francisco can finally commit sufficient municipal resources to our precious urban forest. In the coming year, we’ll continue to build upon our accomplish- ments, but we want to take some big steps soon, so that every neighborhood is full of street trees and sidewalk gardens. Please join me in making sure that San Francisco continues to grow its urban forest. Best wishes to you for the holidays. “Planting trees may be the single most important ecotechnology that we have to put the broken pieces of our planet back together. ”

Preparing for El NiñoBy Karla Nagy, Assistant Program Director

There’s a good chance the San Francisco Bay Area will have a wet winter due to a strong El Niño weather pattern. Prepare your trees and gardens now.

MULCH: Cover any exposed soil in your garden or tree basin with mulch. This will protect your soil from erosion, discourage weeds, and provide nutrients to your plants and trees all winter.

PRUNE: Many perennial plants can be cut back to promote growth during the rainy season. Trim back the old leaves of most grasses. Heavy rains and wind can damage tree limbs. Prune back all dead and broken branches on your tree, or contact FUF or a certified arborist for advice (see fuf.net/arborists).

WEED: Weeds will grow with the winter rains. Remove any weeds in your garden and tree basin now so they won’t compete with the plants and trees you want to keep.

We also extend our thanks to the hundreds of donors who gave us smaller gifts.

The kinder class at Children’s After School Arts, a program at Roof-top School in the Twin Peaks neighborhood, wanted to help trees, so they raised more than $300 with a bake sale and donated it to FUF to pay for street trees for folks who can’t afford them. Love!

Friends of the Urban Forest is a non-profit organization, founded in 1981, that offers financial, technical and practical assistance to individuals and neighborhood groups who wish to plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco.
