1 Introduction
1.1 Terms of Reference
Atmos Consulting Ltd ‘Atmos’ was commissioned by Lovell Partnerships Ltd to carry out
a tree survey of the northern portion of the consented Branston Locks site, Burton-on-
Trent, referred to as land off Shobnall Road. As part of the wider Branston Locks site, the
site has been consented for mixed use (P/2012/01467), where the land off Shobnall
Road is for residential development.
This tree survey updates that undertaken previously by Atmos in 2009 (report ref. 6801 R2
Rev2) of the whole Branston Locks site (to the then current British Standard BS 5837: 2005
Trees in relation to construction: Recommendations). It is carried out in compliance with
the most recent standard, BS 5837 ‘Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition &
Construction’ Recommendations (2012) and BS 3998 Recommendations for Tree Work
(2010).
At this stage, there is no confirmed site layout; this will follow with consideration of the
results of the tree survey.
1.2 Objectives
The objectives of this tree survey included in this report are as follows:
To record the trees present on the site in a tree schedule, which categorises the
trees, tree groups, woodlands and hedges present on the site and their retention
value; and
To produce a tree supporting constraints plan.
Once the site layout has been confirmed, an Arboricultural Impact Assessment will be
produced to determine the retention value of each tree in relation to the proposed
layout. This will be supported by a site specific Arboricultural Method Statement
detailing all proposed works within close proximity to retained trees and
recommendations for tree protection measures for those retained in the development.

2 Survey Methodology
2.1 Tree Survey
All significant trees within influencing distance to the site both on and adjoining the site
have been surveyed and are listed within a Tree Survey Schedule and plotted on all
accompanying plans.
The tree survey was carried out on 3rd July by certified arboriculturalist Craig Watkins.
The scope of works was as follows:
Survey all trees/hedges, individually or in groups, identifying species, physiological
condition, structural morphology, specific dimensions, preliminary management
recommendations and British Standard 5837: 2012 Category Grading – Quality
Assessment (see Table 1 in Appendix 1);
Number all trees where possible, either individually or as groups;
Provision of the Root Protection Area (RPA). This layout design tool will indicate the
area surrounding the trees that contains sufficient rooting volume to support the
survival of the trees, shown in AutoCAD plan form in m²;
Provide a Tree Constraints Plan (TCP) showing the RPA and representing the effect
that the root spread of retained trees may have on proposed layouts;
Advise on the removal, retention and management of trees; and
Prepare a schedule of trees.
The assessment of trees was carried out from ground level without invasive investigation
and the disclosure of hidden defects cannot therefore be expected. Whilst the survey is
not specifically commissioned to report on matters of tree safety, the report obvious
defects that are significant in relation to the existing and proposed land use.
Tree Schedule and Constraints Plan
July 2018 │ Lovell Partnerships Ltd 3
3 Survey Results and Recommendations The tree survey schedule is provided as Appendix 1 and shown in the tree constraints
plan. The following tree and shrub species were recorded on or adjacent to the site:
Oak Quercus robur
Ash Fraxinus excelsior
Sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus
Hawthorn Crataegus monogyna
Lombardy poplar Populus nigra Italica
Elder Sambucus nigra
Holly Ilex aquifolium
Walnut Juglans regia
Leyland cypress Cupressus x leylandii
Lawsons cypress Chamaecyparis lawsoniana
Beech Fagus sylvatica
Western red cedar Thuja plicata
Horse chestnut Castanea sativa
Wild cherry Prunis avium
Laburnum Laburnum spp.
Hazel Corylus avellana
Gold cotoneaster Cotoneaster spp.
Damson Prunus spp.
Birch Betula spp.
Elm Ulmus spp.
In summary, 19 individual trees (T), 19 tree groups (G), 1 woodland (W) and 3 hedges
(H) were recorded on/adjacent to the Shobnall Road site. Of these, two trees were
categorised as A1 (high quality), eight trees, two hedges, one woodland and 16 tree
groups were categorised as B2 (moderate quality), one tree as C1 and the remaining
trees, tree groups and hedges as C2 (low quality).
One of the two A1 value trees a mature oak (T10), is located within the line of trees
which extends southwards from Shobnall Grange. The other, a mature ash (T12) is on
the edge of the woodland on Battlestead Hill to the west of the site. Based on the
indicative design available at this stage, both trees are within areas of vegetation to be
retained due to their landscape value.
It is recommended that the tree schedule and constraints plan are considered as part
of the emerging site design. Once this is finalised, the following steps will be undertaken:
Assess the possible effects of the development proposal on trees via an AIA;
Assess the requirement for protection of trees during development and indicate on
a Tree Protection Plan;
Assess potential mitigation strategies where design conflicts are identified; and
Provide an update to this report including a method statement on the above
matters.

Category and definition Criteria (including subcategories where appropriate) Identificationon plan
Trees unsuitable for retention (see Note)Category U
Those in such a conditionthat they cannot realisticallybe retained as living trees inthe context of the currentland use for longer than10 years
• Trees that have a serious, irremediable, structural defect, such that their early loss is expected due to collapse,including those that will become unviable after removal of other category U trees (e.g. where, for whateverreason, the loss of companion shelter cannot be mitigated by pruning)
• Trees that are dead or are showing signs of significant, immediate, and irreversible overall decline
• Trees infected with pathogens of significance to the health and/or safety of other trees nearby, or very lowquality trees suppressing adjacent trees of better quality
NOTE Category U trees can have existing or potential conservation value which it might be desirable to preserve;see 4.5.7.
See Table 2
1 Mainly arboricultural qualities 2 Mainly landscape qualities 3 Mainly cultural values,including conservation
Trees to be considered for retentionCategory A
Trees of high quality with anestimated remaining lifeexpectancy of at least40 years
Trees that are particularly goodexamples of their species, especially ifrare or unusual; or those that areessential components of groups orformal or semi-formal arboriculturalfeatures (e.g. the dominant and/orprincipal trees within an avenue)
Trees, groups or woodlands of particularvisual importance as arboricultural and/orlandscape features
Trees, groups or woodlandsof significant conservation,historical, commemorative orother value (e.g. veterantrees or wood-pasture)
See Table 2
Category B
Trees of moderate qualitywith an estimated remaininglife expectancy of at least20 years
Trees that might be included incategory A, but are downgradedbecause of impaired condition (e.g.presence of significant thoughremediable defects, includingunsympathetic past management andstorm damage), such that they areunlikely to be suitable for retention forbeyond 40 years; or trees lacking thespecial quality necessary to merit thecategory A designation
Trees present in numbers, usually growingas groups or woodlands, such that theyattract a higher collective rating than theymight as individuals; or trees occurring ascollectives but situated so as to make littlevisual contribution to the wider locality
Trees with materialconservation or othercultural value
See Table 2
Category C
Trees of low quality with anestimated remaining lifeexpectancy of at least10 years, or young trees witha stem diameter below150 mm
Unremarkable trees of very limitedmerit or such impaired condition thatthey do not qualify in higher categories
Trees present in groups or woodlands, butwithout this conferring on themsignificantly greater collective landscapevalue; and/or trees offering low or onlytemporary/transient landscape benefits
Trees with no materialconservation or othercultural value
