abled shrines and temples, magnicent castles and ortresses, impeccably designed gardens,

We start our journey in Kyoto, Japans premier repository o cultural riches, beore transerring
to the world-class port o Kobe. Aboard the superb 110-passenger Clipper Odysseyset sail into
the Inland Sea and explore the small town o Kurashiki, a preserved 17th-century commercial
center where ancient arts and crats endure. We visit the ultimately moving Peace MemorialPark in the heart o Hiroshima, and, at Miyajima, the amous red orii gate o the 6th-century
Shinto shrine oers photographers an exquisite subject.
A trip highlight is our ull-day exploration o Gyeongju, South Korea, the ancient capital o
the brilliant Shilla Dynasty and now a World Heritage Site. In the company o our guides we
examine the amazing, extensively excavated monuments, tombs, and temples that make this

On Honshu we visit a lovely region o rivers and lakes back-dropped by soaring mountains.Matsue, the town o water oers a glimpse into a venerable liestyle that refects centuries-old
traditions, and Kanazawa is a visual delight with its samurai residences, old geisha district,
and colorul sh market. We also explore isolated and beautiul Sado Island, rarely visited
by outsiders, and once the home to political exiles.
Troughout our journey, the gracious Japanese people introduce us to their culture with pride.
Enjoy a traditional dance perormance and tea ceremony, walk through a tranquil orest o old

What To ExpectFor most activities, a relatively low level o exertion is required. Ashore, you must be able to walkmoderate distances over sometimes rough and uneven terrain. You will be required to removeyour shoes while visiting temples, shrines, and a number o other sites. You will need to climbinto and out o Zodiacs or other small boats or one or two excursions ashore (there will bestaf and crew members on hand to assist). rb B Bob has been traveling in Asia or more than ty years, and is a leading
expert on the politics o the area. He has taught Asian politics in American and Canadianuniversities, and has authored books and articles on China, Japan, aiwan, Korea, andMongolia; he is currently writing a book on democracy in modern Mongolia. Bob receivedhis doctorate in political science rom the University o Caliornia at Berkeley; taught at OhioState University; Carleton University; and the University o Victoria. Most recently he wasVisiting Aung San Suu Kyi Endowed Chair in Asian Democracy at the University o Louisville.He has served as consultant to Canadas Department o National Deense and Department oForeign Afairs and International rade.
M B Mark earned his Ph.D. rom Stirling University, Scotland, or his work onavian ecology and behavior in Iceland. Ornithological research, natural history consultancyor V companies, and guiding naturalists and wildlie photographers have taken him to allcontinents. Fascinated by island biology, he is a leading authority on the natural history oJapan, where he was a proessor o biodiversity and conservation at Rajuno Gakuen Universitynear Sapporo. P H Paul was born in England and graduated rom Aberdeen University in politics
and international relations. He wrote his rst book while he was still at university and hasnow published more than 40 books, including several books o his photographs, which reecthis extensive travels. He became a journalist by accident in June 1991 when his aircrat wasdestroyed in a bombing attack on Ljubljana airport in Slovenia. For ten years he reported romsome o the most conicted places in the world. He now lives in Malta, where he writes andphotographs and works as a political risk analyst.
