At their core, all kitchens have three key functioning areas:

1. A food storage zone, based around the fridge (the ‘Cold Point’) 2. A preparation and cleaning zone, based around the sink (the ‘Wet Point’) 3. A cooking zone, based around the oven and hob or cooker (the ‘Hot Point’)

Working Triangle

An efficient working triangle also pays attention to the distances between the three points. Room should be allowed between each point, whether it isfor chopping vegetables, storing cooking utensils or to allow used pans and plates to be stacked before going in the dishwasher or being washed up.An effective kitchen design is one where the person working doesn’t feel too cramped, yet at the same time, doesn’t have to move too much.

Research shows an interesting rule that all good kitchen designers follow:– For a kitchen to be efficient, the three sides of the working triangle should, together, add up to no more than 6600mm and no less than 3600mm.

– The first distance is equivalent to approximately seven paces for an average person with four paces for the smaller dimension.

– Once your working triangle has been decided, the design will couple practicality and flair to create the kitchen of your dreams.
