Amidst the noise and bustle of the Festival season in Edinburgh, the Traverse Theatre remains a key destination for audiences hungry for the best new work. The artistic vitality and creative energy on display across the city this year continues to find expression in our own carefully curated Traverse Festival programme. This month we present eighteen productions, encompassing world, European and UK premieres.

We begin with our own Traverse Theatre Company productions. Celebrating the historic potential offered by this year’s Scottish Independence Referendum, John McCann brings us Spoiling, directed by Traverse Artistic Director Orla O’Loughlin. A hilarious, provocative and deeply political satire, it follows the Scottish Foreign Minister Designate as she prepares for a momentous keynote speech, set to define a nation.

From the pen of Owen McCafferty, the man behind last year’s Festival hit Quietly, comes a searing new drama. Directed by Rachel O’Riordan, Unfaithful explores the different realities which exist within our most intimate relationships, encompassing themes of control and submission, fantasy and reality.

We also welcome the return of our Traverse Breakfast Plays, this year featuring six brilliant world premiere pieces to enjoy over breakfast. The next instalment of Bloody Trams arrives too, following its success earlier this spring, with newly revised verbatim testimony from the people of Edinburgh on this contested issue.

As always, our superb visiting companies, some familiar to the Traverse, some not, bring an exquisite array of new stories and themes to our stages.

We are delighted to play host to Mark Thomas who thrilled audiences two years ago with his award-winning Bravo Figaro. This year he brings Cuckooed, which promises to be equally compelling. David Leddy returns after the success of Long Live the Little Knife with not one but two new projects. Shona Reppe takes up residence in our Traverse Upstairs space with a delightful installation piece, HUFF, for children eight years and above.

From the Dublin Theatre Festival we present riverrun, starring Olwen Fouéré. One of Ireland’s leading theatre-makers, we are excited to welcome Olwen as she brings her magnificent adaptation of the voice of the river in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake to the Traverse stage.

And there’s more, so much more, from home and abroad.

Our Festival programme continues to champion world class new work. Join us this August as we discover new names, re-encounter old friends and experience the most exciting theatre on offer.

Thanks for coming. Orla O’Loughlin, Artistic Director Linda Crooks, Executive Producer

Can relationships withstand the brutality of betrayal? Joan and Tom, Tara and Peter; two couples struggling to comprehend their roles as lovers, partners and individuals.

As Tom and Tara face the tedium of daily life, how far will they go to feel their hearts beat again? When their paths cross, the emotional fall-out will be explosive.

From Owen McCafferty, writer of the Fringe First Award-winning Quietly, comes a stark and searing glimpse into the reality of our relationships - the unspoken desires, the piercing regrets, and the postponed conversations that mark us all.

Director Orla O'Loughlin Designer Anthony Lamble Lighting Designer Colin GrenfellComposer/Sound Designer Danny Krass Cast Gabriel Quigley, Richard Clements In front of the world's media, Scotland’s Foreign Minister will shortly deliver a keynote speech outlining the newly-independent nation’s relationship with the former UK. But there’s a problem. She’s refusing to speak the words she’s been given.

There’s something else she wants to say.

At odds with her Party, and pursued by a harassed Party worker, she has a decision to make; toe the line or take back control. This timely piece, directed by award-winning Traverse Artistic Director Orla O'Loughlin, moves effortlessly from heartfelt political satire to vivid, soaring lyricism.

“When clean souls boil up in the backwash, they will consolidate after the final war, into a peace that shall endure… but not till then. By examining the things cast up in the backwash, we can gauge the progress of humanity.” – Ellen Newbold-La-Motte, nurse in a field hospital, behind the front lines in 1914

A nurse maintains watchful vigil over patients as fragments of past wars lurk within the shadows. From the creators of BigMouth, SmallWar tells the story in the words of those who were there and led the way, and – crucially – those who followed.

He who picks his words well can turn the weakest argument into the strongest. Having enjoyed critically acclaimed sell-out seasons in New York and at the Adelaide Festival, Valentjin Dhaenen’s thrilling companion piece to SmallWar returns to Edinburgh for three performances only.

Using fragments of well-known and lesser-known speeches in a virtuoso performance, BigMouth shows that, in 2,500 years, the tricks of the trade have hardly changed, and that whilst the absolute truth doesn’t exist, it’s just a pretty lie for those who aspire to world power, or simply just the hand of their beloved.

Men in the Cities By Chris Goode

WORLD PREMIERE CHRIS GOODE AND COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH ROYAL COURT THEATRE

1 – 24 AugustPreview 31 July

Director Wendy Hubbard Writer/Performer Chris Goode Designer Naomi Dawson Lighting Designer Katharine Williams

Three-time Fringe First winner Chris Goode (Monkey Bars) returns to the Traverse with an incendiary piece of experimental storytelling.

Framed by two violent deaths – the apparently inexplicable suicide of a young gay man, and the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich in May 2013 – Men in the Cities is a compelling piece about harm and complicity, and about the forces that shape our relationships.

Through fractured snapshots of seemingly disconnected lives, Men in the Cities presents a challenging but radically humane portrait of how we live now.

What would you do if everyone in the world hated you? Would you run? Would you fight? Or would you try to make them laugh?

Donald Robertson has no mates and he isn't funny. But with guidance from his new mentor Gary, he hopes that this is all about to change. Writer/performer Gary McNair returns to the Traverse after 2012's hit Born To Run with a coming of age story that deconstructs the darker side of comedy, and sees McNair performing at his 'brilliant best'.

EUROPEAN PREMIERE STELLAR QUINES THEATRE COMPANY

1 – 24 August Preview 31 July

Director Muriel Romanes Cast Maureen Beattie

Nothing can stop the carousel.

While driving to her dying mother’s bedside, a woman calls upon the spirit of her dead grandmother. So begins a quest through a labyrinth of memories. The Carousel is a journey that shatters the certainties of a woman marked by a pitiless landscape. Ultimately, joy prevails, in a final ride on the carousel.

A poignant one-woman play by celebrated Quebec dramatist Jennifer Tremblay, writer of The List, a Fringe sell-out for Stellar Quines and winner of Scotsman Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards.

Performed daily by new actors, always reading blind, Horizontal Collaboration is an intense drama where sex, power and politics meet emotion, seduction and destruction.

Four lamps, four laptops. Four U.N. lawyers present explosive tribunal transcripts from Judith K, an African warlord’s wife. After her husband’s assassination, Judith becomes leader. She takes her people on a treacherous path towards peace… or does she? Lawyers turn down lamps one by one, then laptops, until we’re all left in darkness.

A thrilling new piece from multi-award-winning writer/director David Leddy. Enjoy as part of a Double Bill with downloadable drama City of the Blind.

Directors Kim Noble & Gary Reich Cast Kim Noble

Blending performance, comedy and film, Kim Noble tries to get close to other people on this planet. Keith for instance. You maybe.

You’re Not Alone is a provocative, moving and comic production that chronicles one man’s attempts at connection, friendship and employment at B&Q. Kim Noble takes his audience on a journey through tower blocks, supermarkets and Facebook, seeking an escape from the loneliness of modern society. It is an intimate glimpse into the mind of an eccentric genius.

11 & 18 AugustJoin Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland to explore what stimulates the artists behind this year’s Made in Scotland showcase, the Traverse’s own programme and the wider Edinburgh Festivals.

Sharing the Experience Chaired by Gary McNair Mon 11 Aug, 2.30pmThe audience is increasingly an integral part of the theatrical experience – as participants or even as the protagonist of the story. How is this immersive style challenging the role of the artist? And how much of the work’s creation is truly owned by the audience? Panel includes Fleur Darkin, Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre (miann) and A Band Called Quinn’s Louise Quinn (Biding Time).

Feminism is the New BlackChaired by Linda McLean Mon 11 Aug, 5pmWhat is behind the popularity and diversity of theatre about women at this year’s Festival? Has Feminist Theatre gone mainstream? Is it a reaction to an art form that views the female experience as specific to women - but the male story as universal? Panel includes Caroline Bowditch (Falling in Love with Frida) and Rosana Cade (Sister).

Come the RevolutionChaired by Nicola McCartney Mon 18 Aug, 2.30pmIn the year Scotland votes for or against independence, theatre about (and perhaps as) political protest is a significant part of the Festival. How much can theatre mobilise political opinion and action? Panel includes Ross MacKay of Tortoise in a Nutshell (Feral) and John McCann (Spoiling).

Not in Front of the Adults!Chaired by Oliver Emanuel Mon 18 Aug, 5pmIs theatre for children and young people more exciting than ‘grown-up’ theatre? Is there more space for experimentation and innovation? And is there something unique about Scotland, where a wealth of independent artists and theatre companies are making world-class work? Panel includes Christine Devaney, Artistic Director of Curious Seed (Chalk About) and Shona Reppe (HUFF).

11 & 18 AugustFour readings from four brand new plays by four emerging and established playwrights from Scotland, England, Wales and South Africa.

Level by level, a woman games designer plays the game of her life against the trolls who torment her in the virtual world.

In a bear pit, six chosen victims are forced to fight to the death.

Serving out her sentence, a female lifer battles for the other women around her to choose life.

A clown takes a deep breath and steps onto the stage in one of Shakespeare’s most challenging roles.

Extracts from the plays are performed as script-in-hand readings by a professional ensemble of Scottish actors. All writers are graduating from the MSc in Playwriting at the University of Edinburgh.
