Travelling on the Paths of the Serpent

At the centre of the Hermetic systems of ceremonial magick is the Holy Qabalah which forms

the framework upon which all other occult studies are based. The primary symbol used by

qaballists to define their system is called the Tree of Life, , which arranges the ten

decimal integers and the twenty-two Hebrew letters into a glyph wherein everything in creation

can find its attribution in relation to everything else. The most commonly familiar set of symbols

that express the base properties of the Tree of Life is the Tarot of which the pip cards correspond

to the numbers and so to the Sephiroth, whilst the twenty-two trumps correspond to the paths

which join the numbers together. These connecting paths on the Tree of Life are called the Paths

of Sepher Yetzirah, of the Book of Formation, and are also often referred to as the Paths of the

Serpent. In Hermetic schools of magick like the Golden Dawn, where the aspirant advances

incrementally through the grades that correspond to the Sephiroth, it is the Paths of the Serpent

that are traversed as one progresses from Neophyte to Magus.

The importance of these paths to the discipline and symbolism of High Magick has long been

understood and the four grade rituals of the Golden Dawn are elaborate ceremonial crossings of

these paths in their correct order from the bottom of the Tree of Life upwards. Unfortunately,

these Path Workings, as they have become known, are generally taken only as far as the Path of

NUN in the published literature, making it an incomplete instruction. In addition, the ceremonial

crossings of these paths is almost frivolously dealt with by the Golden Dawn and the Paths of

Sepher Yetzirah offer so much more potential to the magician that I determined to improve the

existing method.

After considering my options, and because I mostly work alone, I decided that the best method

available to me was to skry or astrally project into the path using the appropriate Tarot Trump as

a doorway into the plane of the path. This method was one that I was well practiced at having

first learned the basics of the art of astral travelling from Crowleys Magick in Theory and

Practice many years previous. I constructed a simple ceremony to invoke the relevant Path of

Sepher Yetzirah and planned a series of operations, to be performed at times when the relevant

planet or sign was exalted in the heavens. With that plan, between 23 August and 24 October

1996 I performed twenty-two ceremonies that took me across the twenty-two Paths of the

Serpent to the vision of the Flaming Sword at the end. The record of these ceremonies have been

collected into a book called The Sword & the Serpent- Being the Visions of the Twenty-two

My experience of these paths convinced me of their importance to all serious students of

ceremonial magick, imbuing the student with a greater depth of understanding of the Holy

Qabalah, Tarot and the nature of initiation. Even to cross only a few of these paths would be of

benefit to the novice student in magick, and the adept will find many things in them to use in

their own Great Work.

A Ritual for Opening the Paths of the Serpent

The Neophyte should be robed and armed, as he is able; incense in the East, corresponding to the

Path which is being invoked. In the South an appropriately coloured candle, in the West, the

Magick Cup with the Lustral Waters and the Magick Pantacle with its sea salt is placed at the

Northern cardinal point of the Magick Circle. The Magick Circle itself should be drawn upon the

floor in the colours of the Path, with all of the Names and Sigils appropriate to the Path being

written about its circumference. Upon the Altar, the Lamp is placed toward the East, to the

South is placed the Holy Oil of Abramelin and to the North upon the Altar is the Magick Bell. At

the centre of the Altar should be the Tarot Trump card corresponding to the Path, these Atus

being the most complete Mandala available for these Paths of the Serpent.

The Godhead corresponding to the Path generally, and the Vision of the Path of Sepher Yetzirah

specifically, are the forces to be invoked, after the LVX and ABRAHADABRA

Bathed and robed, the magician purifies the Temple with the Lustral Waters and performs The

Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.

The Preliminary Invocations should be the Invoking Pentagram or Hexagram Ritual of the

Planet, Sign or Element of the Path of the Serpent, which is being explored. Following this, the

magician should make the Mystic Circumambulations, and the Ritual of the Middle Pillar, as

well as some invocation to ABRAHADABRA if he will.

When his Temple is properly prepared, the magician should swear the Oath of the Attainment of

the Vision of the Path of Sepher Yetzirah; I, (motto), do solemnly swear before the Lord of the

Universe and the invoked powers of (name of the Path), that I shall open the Path of (Hebrew

Letter of the Path) being the (number of Path) Path of Sepher Yetzirah, the Book of Formation.

To that end I have made this Magick Circle and brought to it the Tarot Atu (name Tarot Trump)

which is a living symbol of (name Hebrew letter), and I shall now invoke the (number) Path of

Sepher Yetzirah, and enter into it by this Magick Portal and partake of all that is to be revealed

therein. Do What Thou Wilt Shall be the Whole of the Law.

Following this, the magician should recite an invocation to the particular Path of the Serpent.(the

following is an invocation to the 32nd

Path).

O Thou! Adonai Ha-Aretz! O Thou AB! O Thou Yah! I invoke the powers of the Thirty-second

Path of Sepher Yetzirah! Tau! I invoke the Vision of Tau! May I be enlightened as to the

Wisdom of the Path of Tau! Heaven of Aretz! Heaven of Shabbathai! Manifest to me now, that I

may partake of the Purity of existence therein. O Thou! Administrative Intelligence! Wherein the

order of the Universe is conceived. Take on manifestation in form that I may penetrate the

mysteries of the Path of Tau! Connecting and binding link between the material and formative

worlds, reflection of the Sphere of Saturn, passing through the abodes of the Elements and the

Shells of the Dead! I am the Path of Seb and of Set! I am the Path of the Great Mother of the

The magician then takes the Atu in his right hand and circumambulates appropriately. End in the

East, place the Atu between the Pillars of Hermes and of Solomon, and give the Sign of the

Enterer and then the Sign of Silence. Return the Atu to the Altar and say the conjuration;

(number) Path of Sepher Yetzirah! Long hast thou dwelt in the darkness! Quit the Night and

seek the Day! Reveal thy might irresistible! KHABS AM PEKHT KONX OM PAX Light In

Extension. As the Light hidden in the Darkness can manifest therefrom, so shalt thy light

manifest unto me!

Purify the Atu with the Lustral Waters and consecrate it in the smoke of the incense before

assuming the correct Asana and projecting Astrally into the Path which the card is but a doorway

into. In this plane the magician should observe all of the disciplines necessary, as has been

thoroughly explained previously, and upon completion of the journey, he should close the

Temple appropriately and make an exact record of all that was experienced on his Astral Travels

in the Path of the Serpent.
