The evening before Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, the streets in Bali are massively crowded with locals, expats and tourists. Everybody wants to see the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place always the evening be-fore Nyepi.

Plenty of Ogoh-Ogoh figurines are carried through the streets of Bali. The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activi-ties of living beings (especially humans). After the ceremony the figu-rines will be burned, symbolizing the self-purification.

PREFACEIn prevailing circumstances, the business environment surround-ing the aviation and airport industries is changing rapidly. In view of the increased global competition between airports, Angkasa Pura Airports must strengthen and fortify its functions to establish its position as a key domestic and international hub. We are currently managing 13 airports throughout central and eastern Indonesia, one of the main airports is Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport. In aggregate, our total number of customers for 2012 reached 65.5 million passengers, an increase of 13.8% compared to the previ-ous year.

With a view of competing with other major airports in Asia to attract services and recognizing the fact that the passengers favorite airports are ultimately the airlines choice. Angkasa Pura Airports will aim to meet the distinctively polarized and diverse needs of the aviation market.

Terminal building capacity at Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport is undergoing expansion now and we will seek to give a fresh new look to our commercial facilities by attracting new tenants and improving the environment. This will be done by taking into account the characteristics and shop composition of our existing commercial facilities.

The construction of the new Ngurah Rai Bali International terminal building will increase the airports capacity by up to 25 million passengers a year. This Ngurah Rai project is targeted to be operational by October 2013, by expanding its capacity from 80.000m2 to 190.000m2. As this airport facilitaties the cross-border flow of goods and people, we will strive to stay abreast with the growth in aviation demand and to provide high standards of safety and service. We also pursue new business opportunities on the core of our existing business to achieve corporate growth.

Angkasa Pura Airports are committed to ensuring safe and functional airport operations. We will continue to strive and become an attractive airport with the advantages of being trusted and preferred by travelers, airlines, other customers using our airport or with whom we work with.

Angkasa Pura Airports supports Travelling Bali.

Ngurah Rai in the red circle, Djelantik in the blue circle. Malang 1931.

Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, is an Indonesian National Hero who commanded military forces in Bali against the Dutch during the Indonesian War of Independence.

Ngurah Rai was born in Desa Carangsari, Kabu-paten Badung, Bali on the 30th January 1917. He studied at a Dutch Marga elementary school and then went to high school in Malang, East Java. Later, he received Dutch military training at the Mil-itary Cadet School in Gianyar, Bali and Magelang, Central Java. The National Hero graduated from military training and joined the Dutch-sponsored military as a second lieutenant in Bali.

After the Indonesian declaration of independence, the Colonel established the People’s Security Army, the forerunner of the Military of Indonesia for the Lesser Sunda Islands. He then left for the re-publican capital, Yogyakarta, to receive orders be-fore returning to Bali to oppose the approximately 2,000 Dutch troops that had landed in March, 1946. Ngurah Rai thought, that the republican forces were divided thus he worked hard to reunite them before organizing the first attack against the Dutch forces headquarters at Tabanan.

The Dutch located Ngurah Rai’s base and offered negotiations, but the Colonel refused. On the 20th November 1946, the Dutch launched a large scale attack on Marga with the assistance of troops and aircraft forces from Lombok.

Lieutenant Colonel Ngurah Rai ordered a pupu-tan or fight to the death. He died along with all of his troops in the fight, now known as “The Battle of Margarana”. Ngurah Rai was burried in Marga.

On the 9th August 1975, by a Presidential Deci-sion, I Gusti Ngurah Rai was declared as a na-tional hero.

Bali’s Ngurah Rai’s Airport is named after him and his image is on the 50,000 rupiah note.

Galungan DayThis important Hindu ceremony is celebrated every 210 days according to the Pawukon Calendar. Galun-gan lasts for ten days. During this period, the Balinese Gods visit the island. Before this big holiday, the island becomes very busy. The women create beautiful woven ‘banten’ which are offerings made from young coconuts. The men decorate bamboo poles, known as penjors, which adorn the streets of every Balinese village.

Sometimes, the local people cook a whole pig and give it to families. In every village, the men cook lawar, a deli-cious food made from vegetables, spices, and pork. The day after Galungan, called Manis Galungan, is consid-ered as quality time for family gatherings. Many Balinese people take this day off in order to visit their extended family. The ten days of Galungan celebrations give visi-tors an authentic idea of what religion means to Balinese people. It is a great time to visit Bali.

Kuningan DayBalinese Hindus believe that ten days after Galungan Day their ancestors return to paradise after dwelling on earth for ten days. The Balinese thank the gods for their mercy and often celebrate this holiday by visiting each other and having fun. The most elaborate Kuningan cer-emonies are at Sakenan Temple on Seragan Island, also known as Turtle Island.

Nearly all festivals in Bali are related to the Balinese Pawukon-Calender which is different to other calendars by containing only 210 days. Most of the Balinese Festivals and Holidays depending on the Pawukon-Calender and moon phases are published by the Bali Government Tourism Office with the

friendly advice of Dr. Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu.

If you are here on Nyepi, please try to follow the Balinese custom of keeping silent. If you are in a hotel and you

can’t live without electricity, close the curtain and don’t show any signs of light. If you do not wish to fast,

please shop the day prior to Nyepi for food and other necessities.

To celebrate Balinese New Year, known as Nyepi, the local people stay silent, fast and meditate. They do not use electricity, drive cars or bikes and are not allowed to walk on the roads. Even the airport is closed. For tourists, Nyepi can be a peaceful time to mediate and rest your busy mind for twenty four hours. The

Day of Silence is important and unique to the Balinese culture.

an important part of the cultureBalinese DanceThe following brief explanation of three main Balinese Dances should help to understand the meaning of

Legong, Barong, and Kecak Dances.

Legong Danceyears old while the body is still very flexible. For some special temple ceremonies that occur only every thirty to fifty years, only young girls or boys that have not yet reached puberty can perform a special dance for the Gods. The Balinese believe that before puberty, it is easier for these young boys and girls to enter a trance.

Performances in restaurants are for entertainment only and can be performed by dancers of all ages.

The Legong Dance is the most feminine dance on Bali and can contain different stories. Eighteen dif-ferent kinds of Legong Dances have developed and depending on the story the dancers tell, 2-5 girls may perform at the same time.

In the most popular form of Legong, known as Legong Kraton, three female dancers perform together. Every dance has several things in com-mon: the decorated costumes, the headdress with frangipani flowers and the dancers who wear beautiful elaborate make up. Dancers are accom-panied by a gamelan orchestra.

Many young girls want to become popular Legong Dancers, however only the most talented girls are allowed to perform on stage. The Legong Dance can be taught as early as four

cast a stronger spell that helped the soldiers’ bodies resist the sharp keris. In the end, Barong’s powers proved to be stronger, thus Rangda ran away. A participant can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance. It is said that if Rangda’s spell is too strong, a weak soldier may not be able to resist it. Even with the help of Barong, he may end up hurting himself with his own keris. The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items, and before they are brought out, a priest must offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung. As well as the priests blessings, offerings must be pre-sented. Balinese Dances are impressive and were originally not performed to entertain tourists. The meaning is based on beliefs in the Bali Hindu Reli-gion. In these dances you will still find much of the Balinese traditions.

Barong is probably the most well known Balinese dance. This dance tells the story of the fight be-tween good and evil. The Barong Dance is a good example of the Balinese way of acting out the relationship between mythology and history be-ing blended into one reality. Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga’s father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle to punish Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came to help Erlangga’s soldiers. They began to fight. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga’s soldiers all want to kill themselves. The soliders then pointed their poisoned keris, a sharpened sword like knife, into their own stomachs and chests. Barong then

by the dancers who enter the stage and shows a battle from the Ramayana. As the performers chant, dancers stage a battle in which the mon-key king, Sugriwa and his army of monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Rahwana. Kecak has its origins in sanghyang, an exorcism dance in which some dancers go into a trance. The Kecak is so popular among tourists that you can find per-formances almost anywhere on Bali. One of the best places is at the cliff-top temple of Ulu Watu. However, Kecak can be seen in Ubud, Batubulan, and all over the island. Any place you choose, you are sure to enjoy the drama.

The Kecak Dance, also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, is an absolute must see for visitors to Bali. This unique dance is performed by a hun-dred or more men using their voices as percussive musical instruments. The men sit in a circle just in front of the audience. They sway, stand up, or lie prone as the story develops. The chanting men wear checked cloth around their waists, leave their chests bare, and throw their arms upwards with their fingers outstretched to the sky. This gesture drives out evil. Some of the men become actors in the drama being unfolded

Every kind of art and craft can be found in Ubud at the traditional markets and in shops on the Monkey Forest Road. If you wish to create your own silver pendant or ring, there are shops with experts that will teach you how to create your unique piece of jewelry.

During your trip, a must see is Bali’s famous Barong Dance in Batubulan. If you wish to get back to na-ture, a stop at the Bali Bird Park in Singapadu is a beautiful attraction; it is especially nice for children.

Enjoy an adventurous trip on “THE ROAD OF ART”

Batubulan, the village of stonemasons, provides an interesting first stop on your trip. Figures carved from stone can reflect images of demons or Gods and can be seen everywhere on the road. The stone carvings, all of the highest quality, require a strong hand to carve images out of a block of stone.

In Celuk, the work of the goldsmiths and silver-smiths is outstanding. In some shops, you can watch the designers working on their artistic crea-tions. Many of their ancestors were once commis-sioned to work for Balinese Royalty.

A stop in the art market in Sukawati is a must. Among many other fine arts and crafts, this art market features a selection of traditional Balinese temple umbrellas known as “Payung”. The market also has fine hand carved shadow puppets, known as a “Wayang”. The carefully carved detailed pup-pets are made from buffalo leather. Some of the more exclusive puppets are usually owned by the local dalang dalang, or puppet master. Sukawati offers a variety of souvenirs that make perfect gifts to take home to a friend or for yourself. Next on the road is Mas, the village of woodcarvers. On the trip from Denpasar to Ubud, about 26 kilometers, you will see a big selection of traditional arts and crafts. Many of the crafts people work outside and invite visitors to watch their skillful hands as they carefully make beautiful creations. Stonemasons, silversmiths, goldsmiths, puppeteers, woodcarvers,

painters and dancers can all be seen on this almost magical trip through an artistic dream world.

The road from Denpasar to Ubud can be described very easily with four words, “The Road of Art”.

Located at Bratan Lake, the area around this temple is a good place to relax or participate in a variety of water sports available. This temple dates back to the 17th century and is dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Dewi Danu. Farmers come to Pura Ulun Danu to pray for rain for their crops. (Bali Map)

Uluwatu is one of Bali’s most sacred places of worship. This temple is a classic example of traditional Balinese architecture. You can feed the the monkeys, but watch out they can be greedy. Enjoy the inspiring view of the cliffs and if you are lucky, you may spot some dolphins or turtles in the sea below. Sunset is definitely the time to visit Uluwatu, a place that is also known for its Kecak Dancers. (Bali Map)

Besakih, known as the Mother Temple is important to all Indonesian Hindus. The temple was founded in the late eighth century. Since that time, it has undergone several major renovations. Balinese Hindus believe that the spirits of their ancestors live there. It is best to visit this historical place early in the day since in the after-noon and evening there is early cloud coverage in the area. (Bali Map)

Tanah Lot, located 20 kilometers away from Denpasar is one of Bali’s most popular temples. It is also famous for its breath taking sunset views. Arrive at about 5 p.m. so you have enough time to explore the area be-fore you watch the kaleidoscope of colors as the sun sets into the sea. Make a donation and touch the holy snake! A trip to Tanah Lot can be perfectly combined with a nice dinner in Seminyak. (Bali Map)

Bali is a great place to shop. There are many Western standard shopping malls as well as low budget shopping places where the final price is up to the negotiating talent of the buyer.

Many Shopping Malls in Bali offer a wide range of products. Shoes, clothes, jewelry, souvenirs or deli-cious food. The prices are fixed but some shops offer discount vouchers for your next purchase. If the customer spends a large amount, there is a little room for some negotiation. All products in Bali’s Shop-ping Malls have western standards. Friendly service, smiling and helpful people making shopping in Bali a good experience. Negotiating is a normal practice in local markets, with street sellers and in smaller independent shops. The selection of products is plentiful. Of course, no guarantee is offered but bargain-ing and street shopping can be fun too.

KORI Restaurant, Bar & CateringSince the ‘KORI’ (the two ornate gate pillars flanking either village or temple entrances) opened in June 1998, KORI Restaurant & Bar has been a leading establishment for outstanding international cuisine and Asian flavors for 15 years now.

Situated on bustling Poppies Lane II, you could not imagine to find a more tranquil and romantic setting, complete with soothing fishponds and gardens, on such a chocker-block side street from Kuta’s main drag of Jl. Legian.

The architecture is pure Balinese, and KORI has been cleverly constructed to accommodate everyone, wheth-er in the large and spacious main area, or in one of the discreet, romantic hideaway corners - secluded dining platforms, covered by traditional alang-alang roofs, with large plump cushions.

Enthralling ambience coupled with a selection of our cocktails, KORI Bar is deemed as one of the prized destinations in crowded Kuta.

Through our successful experiences as one of Bali’s Best Restaurant and Bar, KORI Catering is born to serve you to cater various types of events.

Whether you are planning to hold a grand event or a small gathering, please let us know and we will be more than delighted to assist you.

Coral AquacultureCoral reef farming is the practice of extracting segments or larva from live corals on the reef in order to replant them in a nursery, where they can be protected until they grow to adulthood. Once the corals have grown they are transplanted back into the reef. This technique has been used successfully to heal damaged areas and to improve the recovery of coral reefs damaged by pollution and the many that are suffering from degradation. The method is commonly referred to as the “gardening method” as it is analogous to horticulture and has been compared to sil-viculture as a management practice that mimics natural ecosystems.

The technique involves treating coral as if it were a plant. Coral seeds are grown in nurseries, then replanted into their natural habitat – in this case, the sea. Coral reef farm-ing is predominantly practiced for three reasons, either for conservation, to supply aquariums and zoos for public exhibits or to supply the home aquarium hobby industry. Some Coral reefs can take thousands of years to form. During their formation they can develop into several dif-ferent shapes depending on their location and surround-ing geologic of features, Club Aqua Bali as a company for Marine activities, takes over responsibility and offers in addition to the regular Seawalker activity this special and unique Highlight that you will remember for a long time. Interest RatesDue to the financial crisis, interest rates dropped worldwide. Housing finance is cheaper when inter-est rates are lower. A Bali property investment at this time is a good financial idea.

Return on Investment Because of a lower interest rate in Indonesia, many people look at Bali as a good alternative invest-ment. Stocks and Property are showing high return on investments, usually with a minimum holding period of ten years.

Tourist Flow The number of tourists that visited Bali increased by 10% in 2011 and is steadily rising. People from everywhere are falling in love with this lovely and peaceful island. The increasing number of visitors and expats coming to the island causes a bigger interest in the property market. Both Indonesians and foreigners often buy a holiday or a retirement residence in Bali.

Improved Infrastructure The infrastructure on Bali is developing. New streets, including tunnels and bridges, are currently under construction and scheduled to be finished in the near future. The government has plans for more development in order to handle the increasing tour-ist flow.

Balinese Tradition – Lease the landThe Balinese are keeping their tradition by leasing and not selling their land. A part of their strong cultural tradition is to buy land and keep the land title in a Balinese name so that it will be in the family for future generations. Their culture thinks in terms of generations, both past and future. Leases to for-eigners should be notarized to insure that they have legal investments.

Indonesian (Balinese) EconomyThe Indonesian economy is going incredibly well compared to other worldwide economies. Along with India and China, the Indonesian GDP will be listed among the top 3 economies worldwide in the next few years.

Permanent Home or Holiday Rental Property If you wish to have a home in Bali, it is easy to hire local people to take care of your house and rent it to guests while you are away. You can advertise on the net or amongst your friends. Good places to stay with well trained staff are always in demand, but please make sure to set up the reuqired licens-es.

Population Growth on Bali and Lim-ited SpaceThe population growth on Bali Island is significant.

Property prices on the island have increased a lot during the last 4 years and there is no doubt the trend will continue.

Ten reasons that make a Bali property investment attractive

90

Page 91: traveling BALI vol. VI

Growth is about 2% per year, one of the most rap-idly developing in the world, thus space is limited. If you are interested in owning a home on this beauti-ful island, now is the right time.

Banking and Euro Crisis Due to the Western Banking Crisis, many people trust banks less and are now thinking in terms of alternative investments. They are asking questions such as ‘Is the Euro safe?’ or ‘Will banks collapse?’ or ‘Will we get inflation due to the high government

spending to aid the Western crisis?’

Opening the Property Market to For-eigners Many countries around Indonesia have opened their property markets to foreigners, educated speculation is that it is only a matter of time be-fore Indonesia follows other Asian countries in this process.Buying property is not an easy decision and every

decision in investment has to be thought about carefully. There are always risks. Due to the hous-ing bubble, it is important that a property invest-ment be planned with a long term investment in mind. Development in some areas of the island have already reached a level of increased efficiency, these places are easily sold. This situation provides owners with a perfect switch opportunity. Sell highly priced property with access to main roads and Buy Property in Jimbaran or Nusa Dua.

At this time, Nusa Dua, Bukit and Jimbaran have the most potential for buying property at a good rate. Over the next ten years, these areas will de-velop into being one of the most exclusive areas in Bali.

Good locations can be found starting at a 225 Mil-lion Rupiah per are, but can go up to 450 Million for land with a beautiful view. An are is an Indonesian measurement, which is ten metres by ten metres.

Located in Jimbaran Hills, one of Bali’s Top areas, this perfectly shaped and 1360 m2 big property offers everything a sophisticated buyer is looking for; Great view, exclusive neighborhood and a short distance to all major Top Resorts and Villas in Nusa Dua as well as to Bali’s best Beaches in Jimbaran. Jimbaran & Uluwatu developed very quickly from a small fishermen village into Bali’s most popular place to have romantic seafood din-ners. Many Restaurants can be found to the left and right of the Intercontinental Hotel.

For those who stay outside of Jimbaran it is highly recommended to combine the visit of Uluwatu Temple which offers a great view, the Kecak Dance, wild monkeys and follow up with a Seafood Dinner at Jimbaran Beach.

Bali’s best Surfing Hot Spots can be found in Uluwatu. Klapa Beach or El Kabron, both di-rectly located on the Cliff offer you a great scen-ery to enjoy your sundowner Cocktails while the Seafood in Jimbaran is already waiting for you.

Balinese women, from this “Island of artists”, have al-ways produced extraordinarily lovely textiles for tem-ple ceremonies and dance costumes. In the 1930’s they turned their traditional craft skills to lace, and mastered techniques which were fast disappearing elsewhere. Since the early 1970’s, Uluwatu – Hand-made Balinese Lace has led the way in preserving and developing these fine skills. Now Uluwatu presents something very unique: sophisticated, stylish clothing and linen featuring handmade lace that compares to the best lace on the market.

parts in Indonesia develop out of Bali’s leading tour-ism role. Although, what is a booming economy worth without development of the infrastructure? Not a lot!

Bali has understood that de-velopment of its infrastruc-ture is important for further investments, economical growth and to increase tourism on the Island of the gods. With the new Under-pass in Kuta and The Bridge from Sanur to Nusa Dua, which is also connected to

the airport, the Balinese Government was able to reduce traffic massively which now pays off for everybody coming to The Island Of The Gods.

Bali’s leading role in Indonesian tourism, based also on its strategically perfect geographic posi-tion, has not only a positive impact on Bali itself. A very important side effect of Bali’s quick devel-opment is the access to other regions in Indone-sia as more and more new flight routes are being launched, outgoing from Ngurah Rai international Airport Bali.

This means that Ngurah Rai International Airport brings an additional positive impact on the devel-opment of the economy in other parts of Indone-sia and finally it helps to increase the economy in all areas across the country.

To strengthen this progress and obviously to of-fer vacationers from all over the world a conveni-ent arrival, PT Angkasa Pura I was doing its bit and invested a huge amount of money to develop Ngurah Rai International Airport’s infrastructure.

Bali, also very well known as “Paradise Island” or “The Island of the Gods” is Indonesia’s flagship tourist destination.

Balinese people are very spiritual and have strong religious beliefs. This is probably the main point why everybody from all over the world feels at-tracted to Bali and plenty of visitors come back again and again. Plenty of international important political events take place in Bali with the target to make the world a better place and media from all over the world write about this peaceful Island.

Balinese is one out of about 300 ethnical groups populating Indonesia which consists of about 17,000 islands. All the groups have the same rights and everybody lives together in peace and harmony which guarantees to keep the amazing diversification in culture. Also, every ethnical group has its own language which makes Indonesia the most multilingual country in the world. To ensure working communication across the country, a high Indonesian language was developed called “Bahasa Indonesia”.

The Indonesian Government has taken huge steps over the last couple of years and has driven democracy forward. This step was finally one of the major pillars for the Indonesian economical growth which was found repeatedly over the last couple of years in the world’s TOP 5.

Bali with its strong economy, based on tourism, has a role model function for the rest of Indonesia. Big movements and changes in Indonesia have their starting position in Bali and plenty of other

The International Airport of Ngurah Rai, located in the Badung regency, can be described as Angka-sa Pura’s brand-new express gateway to Indone-sia and vice versa, the worlds access to Bali and Indonesia. Especially for the regency of Badung, which has the biggest GDP out of Bali’s 8 regen-cies where around 85% comes from tourism, will profit massively from Angkasa Pura’s I airport pro-ject as the capacity has increased dramatically.

With enormously increasing numbers in new ar-rivals, it was simply necessary to restructure the complete airport and the surrounding area. Also it was important for Angkasa Pura to go with the times and use the newest technology available for the passenger’s convenience.

B+S+C is the formula which I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was developed on. B stands for Beauty. The distinctive design, which is a com-bination of Balinese architecture and a minimal-ist modern design, will simply impress you and makes Bali’s airport completely different to all the others in the world. S stands for safety. By using high end materials in construction and by hiring additional security staff, you can feel safe during your complete stay in and around the airport. Fi-nally we have the C, standing for convenience. An easy to understand airport structure, modern technology such as the newest elevators, escala-tors, travelators or baggage claims and obviously the increased amount of Visa terminals and pass-port controls making your arrival and departure simply comfortable.

As infrastructure is one of the most important things in a fast growing economy, with new flight routes and the enormously increased capacity, Angkasa Pura I has not only built an airport for tourists convenience, but it will also increase the economy in Badung, Bali and the whole Indone-sia.

Welcome to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Air-port – Your personal Brand-New Express Gate-way To Paradise! - We are ready to welcome YOU and the rest of the world!

FAR FROM AN ORDINARY AIRPORT

137

Page 138: traveling BALI vol. VI

To anticipate the surge of passengers, aircraft movements and cargo at Ngurah Rai International Airport, since 1975 till 1978 airport development projects have been done by building on aviation support facilities, such as building a new interna-tional terminal. The old terminal building was con-verted into a domestic terminal, while the domes-tic terminal building was used as a cargo building, catering business, and a multi-purpose building.

In 1990, the Project Development of Ngurah Rai International Airport was re-done along with the increasing growth of the planes that used it. The developments of these facilities were divided into three stages and were called the Project Facility Airport and Aviation Safety (FBUKP).

FBUKP Project Phase I (1990-1992) includes an extension that comes with the aviobridge termi-nal, runway extension, relocation of taxiway, apron expansion, renovation and expansion of the termi-nal building, expansion of the parking lot, cargo building development, building operations, the development of air navigation facilities and supply of aircraft fuel.

FBUKP Project Phase II (1998-2000) included air-

port development undertaken by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, among others, by utilizing an area of 12 hectares of mangroves for use as aviation safety facilities.

While FBUKP Project Phase III (2011-2013) in-cluded the development of the terminal building, parking deck, and apron. The current domestic terminal area will be expanded to reach a total of 12,000 meters in width that will then be used as the international terminal. The existing interna-tional terminal will be converted into the domestic terminal. Under these conditions, Ngurah Rai Air-port will be able to accommodate up to 25 million passengers.

TO ANTICIPATE“LACK OF CAPACITY”

138

Page 139: traveling BALI vol. VI

Ngurah Rai International Airport is not just a trans-port node or one of the economic driving forces alone, beyond business, this airport will become a new landmark for the Island.

In the context of sociology, airport infrastructure is believed to have a broader meaning, which became part of the culture and customs of Bali. Once off the plane, the passengers will be able to instantly enjoy and explore some of the cultural richness of Bali at the airport. So that the aspects of the culture, customs and religion don’t become one-dimensional they have all been highly con-sidered in the planning of the development of this airport. Together with the local government and related agencies, Angkasa Pura Airports formed a design committee before starting the construction of the airport.

The committee was also strengthened by acad-emicians from the University of Udayana, the practitioners element of Architectural Association Region Bali, team builder and traditional Balinese buildings, as well as traditional leaders in the vil-lages around the Ngurah Rai International Airport. With the committee, local wisdom could be ac-

commodated and enrich the airport development plan. The Architecture of the airports and support-ing facilities not only parallel with the existing dy-namics of technological progress, but also to pro-mote the artistic and aesthetic nuance charged customs and culture of Bali.

The exterior and interior of the airport buildings are thick with the feel of Bali, which combined with the dimensions of a cosmopolitan modernity and futuristic style.

In fact, many traditional rituals accompanied and participated in this project. The main building, which is a new passenger terminal, has a roof like an ocean wave. The Multilevel parking structure is pyramid-shaped, resembling a tiered rice field. on the interior side, very strong Balinese ornaments color this magnificent building.

While the dimensions of modernity and techno-logical progress, will look at the major equipment and the complementary airport. For example, gate handling system, which uses HBS (Hold Baggage Screening) worth Rp 150 billion.

Passenger baggage will be moved electronically and mechanically from day check-in to the air-craft approaching. This technology creates mini-mal physical contact by the officers, but much more accurate, fast, effective, and efficient. Also equipped wich x-ray sensored layers and it will be the first time this equipment has been applied to an Indonesian airport.

The combination of modern elements and Intellectual Culture of Bali
