ative and sometimes fun, while presenting the community’s news,” he said.
In December 2003, the Loeschs purchased the paper from Seanne Saunders Gillen who had operated the paper for seven years. “We’re thrilled to have Larry take over the Sentinel and are glad that Caleb and Trish will continue their work at the Sentinel. We’re fortunate to have such dedicated employees,” Loesch
commented. Loesch started his Alaska
newspaper career at the Ketchikan Daily News in 1973 as a press operator. In July 1976 he purchased the weekly Pe-tersburg Pilot. With over 44 years at the helm of the paper, he is the second longest tenured publisher in the state of Alaska, behind Thad and Sandy Poulson at the Sitka Sen-tinel. They have owned that paper since December 1975.
Persily and his late wife,
Leslie Murray, owned and op-erated the Sentinel from May 1976 to October 1984. After leaving Wrangell, they moved to Juneau, where they each worked for different newspa-pers. Murray died in a car acci-dent in 1987.
After leaving Wrangell, Persily worked for The An-chorage Times, Associated Press, Juneau Empire, Anchor-age Daily News and Petroleum News, and at different times owned a weekly paper in
Juneau and The Skagway News.
In addition to his journalism career, Persily has served in several federal, state and mu-nicipal positions in Alaska, in-cluding deputy commissioner at the Alaska Department of Revenue from 1999-2003.
He is finishing work this month as the visiting Atwood Chair of Journalism at the Uni-versity of Alaska Anchorage. The chair is endowed by the Atwood Foundation, in mem-ory of the late Bob and Evange-line Atwood, owners of the Anchorage Times from 1935-1989.
Two more positive cases of COVID-19 were identified in Petersburg on Friday, Nov. 27, according to a joint press re-lease between the Petersburg Borough and the Petersburg Medical Center.
The first individual was a Petersburg resident who be-came symptomatic for COVID-19 while out of state, according to the joint press release. Be-fore returning to town, the in-fected individual followed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for isolation. The individual tested positive for the virus at Peters-burg Airport on Nov. 22 but has since been deemed recov-ered by state health officials.
The case is no longer a threat to the community, according to the joint press release.
A college student returning to Petersburg also tested posi-tive for the virus on Nov. 22,
according to the joint press re-lease. The individual was not systematic prior to or upon ar-rival at Petersburg Airport. The college student soon be-came mildly symptomatic and
has been in isolation, accord-ing to the joint press release. The Emergency Operations Center considers the case to be of low risk to the community.
As of Wednesday, Peters-
burg Medical Center reported 5,923 test samples have been collected to be tested for COVID-19 onsite or at outside laboratories. Of those tests col-lected, 5,802 have returned negative and 86 are still pend-ing. According to PMC, 51.2 percent of the local population has been tested for the virus.
There is currently one ac-tive case of COVID-19 in town, according to the borough.

December 3, 1920 Inaugurating the new winter
mail schedule, the gas boat Trygve went to Wrangell on Wednesday and returned with mail from the states. Hogue and Tveten have been awarded the contract and this service will consist of 6 trips between Petersburg and Wrangell and 4 trips between Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan between the 1st of December and the 31st of March.
November 30, 1945 Petersburg is one of the high
towns of the Territory in purchases of E Bonds in this final Victory Loan Drive, according to the latest figures released by the Territorial headquarters to Carrol Clausen, chairman of the drive here. Petersburg has sales of $17,118.75 through November 24 of this year.
December 2, 1970 A program of water
rationing goes into effect tomorrow to conserve Petersburg’s dwindling water supply. The cold weather has frozen several small streams running into the city’s reservoir and the city’s supply this morning was approximately 15 millions gallons. Public Works Supt. Ken Welde estimated that there is enough water for about a
week on the city’s average consumption level of 1.5 million gallons a day. The mayor said he had instructed City Mgr. Baker to contact Civil Defense and Alaska Disaster officials to obtain emergency supplies. Baker said the city has a Civil Defense water truck and 55-gallon water cans at the municipal building. In addition, he said, the city has sanitation units that can be used by the city schools and hospital. “We need to act now,” Councilman Vernon Counter said. “The quicker we act to
stop this extreme loss of water, the better.”
November 30, 1995 Petersburg’s building boom
continued unabated this year, with commercial construction rising to a new record of $5 million, at least 60 percent of which came from city projects, according to the city. “It’s exciting to see every contractor in town still busy,” said Leo Luczak, Petersburg’s community development official. The previous record, set in 1994, was $4 million.
