Addressing onlookers at the very first check-in of V Australia passengers in Johannesburg, a jovial Richard Branson explained how 16 years ago he had begged authorities for a licence to operate flights between the UK and South Africa to break the monopoly SAA and British Airways had enjoyed on the route for years. “With SAA and Qantas acting as one airline there has been no competition on the Australia route but we’re here to change this,” said Richard. V Australia ce, Brett Godfrey, highlighted that, as a result, fares to South Africa had been excessive in the past. “Since we announced our intention to fly to Johannesburg, fares have dropped 30% and today they’re down an additional 10% as we launch our service. We’re full tonight and we’re full coming back.” As a result of strong forward bookings on the route and pending the arrival of its next B777 aircraft, V Australia is boosting its schedule from two to three return weekly services from December 16. “And we aim to increase this to a daily flight,” said Richard. The new service to Johannesburg will mean South Africans can, for the first time, fly around the world with one brand. “South African travellers will be able to fly to Australia and then across to Los Angeles on V Australia, on to New York with Virgin America, followed by a flight to London and then back to South Africa on Virgin Atlantic.” Currently, Qantas and SAA own almost 70% of the market flying from SA to Australia. Recently Australia’s International Air Services Commission granted Qantas permission to renew its codeshare with SAA until December 31, provided the two airlines priced and sold their services on the route independently. The airlines will also only be allowed to operate the codeshare if they have at least 10 return services per week. For several years, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has expressed concerns over the “high airfares and rising load factors” on the route, saying the QF-ZA codeshare meant the two airlines had no incentive to price more aggressively to expand the market or introduce new services. The commission said there was “increasing evidence that overall public benefits were being eroded by a lack of competition on the route”. It added: “While the introduction of the codeshare arrangements continue to generate cost savings for Qantas and SAA, there is no evidence that these efficiencies have been passed on to consumers in the form of lower fares.” Starting March 21, Air Seychelles is now flying to Cape Town via Johannesburg for four months (until July 18). The flight is an extension of the airline’s existing Sunday flight to Johannesburg. The flight departs Seychelles on Sundays at 08h10, arriving in Johannesburg at 11h25 and departs for Cape Town at 12h40, arriving at 14h50. The return service departs Cape Town on Sundays at 20h30, arrives in Johannesburg at 22h40, departs at 23h55 and arrives in Seychelles on Mondays at 06h50. In last week’s issue of TNW (March 17) it was reported incorrectly in the Germany and Austria feature that the Oberammergau Passion Play takes place in Austria. However, the play takes place in Germany. TNW apologises for the error.

THE Australian High Commission confirms no travel agent or other

company is authorised to issue Australian visas, although several travel agencies are allowed to receive visa applications and submit them to the High Commission in Pretoria for processing.

This follows allegations against Cape Town-based De Vuyst Travel, which allegedly failed to submit visa applications to the High

Commission despite having been given all the relevant documentation and payments from applicants.

A representative from De Vuyst Travel told TNW that extraordinary circumstances at the agency had resulted in the applications not being submitted over a certain period but that this had since been rectified.

The High Commission’s third secretary, William Blomfield, said De Vuyst Travel was one of the companies with which it had a business partnership, allowing them

to receive and submit visa applications. “We are aware of concerns about the business practices of De Vuyst Travel and are undertaking further investigations into the matter.”

According to William, the Australian High Commission has a formal agreement with VFS Global to receive visa applications and payment of visa fees on the High Commission’s behalf. Information about submitting Australian visa applications through VFS is available from the VFS website at www.vfs-au.co.za. n

Take note: Aussie visas

From page 1Qantas refutes this,

saying indirect carriers like Emirates, Etihad and Singapore Airlines have been increasing their market share on the route. This, it said, had ensured both airlines had maintained competitive pricing in the face of this “meaningful competition”.

Now with the introduction of new competition on the route, it is likely Qantas will push for a longer-term renewal (it has in the past only been granted one-year renewals) for its codeshare with SAA.

Both carriers will also be boosting their frequencies

on the route in response, with Qantas announcing daily SYD-JNB B747 flights from November, and SAA flying daily to Perth.

Refuting claims that the codeshare between Qantas and SAA was in the best interests of the consumer, Richard said: “There was a monopoly on the route. It was ripe to be broken and we’re glad we’re doing it.”

About V AustraliaV Australia launched in

2006. The boutique-style carrier started with trans-Pacific flights from the east coast of Australia to the west coast of the US, but now also

offers flights from Australia to Thailand, in addition to its new Johannesburg service.

Its fleet of new B777-300ERs have 33 lie-flat beds in business, 40 premium economy and 288 economy-class seats. There are two inflight bars and a ladies-only bathroom.

Flight schedule:● VA16 departs JNB at 19h30, arriving in Melbourne at 18h50 the next day ● VA15 departs Melbourne at 11h00, arriving in JNB at 17h15. Both flights operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and from December 16 on Thursdays. n

AirHeadsLH to announce A380 destinations soonLUFTHANSA will soon announce the select few destinations to be serviced by its fleet of A380s. Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Thierry Antinori, executive vp marketing and sales, said its fleet of A380s would begin to be delivered within the next few weeks and that the carrier had been in discussions about which destinations the 15 new aircraft would service. With the launch of the A380, the carrier also intends to introduce a new first- and economy-class product that promises to enhance passenger comfort on its long-haul routes. Lufthansa has said over the past year that South Africa could possibly be serviced by the A380, particularly over the period of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to facilitate the transport of large numbers of fans out of Europe.

King Shaka flights to operate from May 1AIRLINES have received official confirmation that the cutover date for flights from the existing Durban Airport to the new King Shaka Airport will take place on May 1. Airlink, said to be the first airline to operate from the airport, has announced that all flights, up to and including April 30, will land at the existing Durban International Airport and all its flights will operate from King Shaka Airport from May 1. The new airport is approximately 65km from the current airport, and Airlink says it’s vital that passengers are made aware of the cutover date.

Comair expands route offeringCOMAIR has announced that it has partnered with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) to expand its domestic route network to include Nelspruit (Mbombela). From May 4, British Airways will operate six services a week between Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) and OR Tambo International. The 40-minute flights will be operated by a B737-300 and will depart from OR Tambo at 10h40 with the return flight departing KMIA at 12h00.

Mango to launch on-board InternetMANGO aims to be the first South African airline to offer Internet connectivity on board all its aircraft later this year, subject to South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) approval. The airline, whose partnership with G-Connect has already delivered more affordable bandwidth to South Africans, has extended this association with the provider to include the in-flight service. Using the G-Connect Internet on board Mango’s aircraft will cost less than R1 per megabyte. Mango’s Internet service will be operational across its fleet of new-generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft. There are no sign-up costs to get a G-Connect account and no contract tie-ins. The G-Connect account then allows passengers to stay connected through a shared wallet on the ground or in-flight Wi-Fi, paying only for services used.

ARE you confused by the long list of rules involved when clients, who qualify for the

USA’s visa waiver programme, travel to the States? TNW spoke to the US Embassy on what your clients need to know when travelling to the US.

Although your client may be a national or citizen of a country that comes under the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) they still need to apply for the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). This does not apply to South African passport holders who will have to

secure a US visa before travelling. If your client wants to travel to

the US for temporary business or leisure, they need to follow the ESTA process on https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html.

Applications can be submitted at any time prior to travel to the United States, however travellers are advised to apply for authorisation as soon as they begin to plan their trip.

If applicants’ destination addresses or itineraries change after authorisation has been approved, they can easily update that information through the ESTA website.

Good morning, Vietnam!

ESTA unravelled

Q How much does it cost? A There is no charge.Q Who needs to apply? A Travellers from Visa Waiver Programme countries, regardless of their point of embarkation, require ESTA prior to boarding any carrier to the US. Q Do I really have to?A Yes. Travellers who have not received ESTA approval may be denied boarding, experience delayed processing, or be denied admission at a US port of entry.Q How close to the time do I have to do this?A Travellers are not required to have specific plans to travel to the United States under the VWP before they apply for ESTA. The US Department of Homeland Security recommends that an ESTA approval be obtained as soon as a VWP traveller begins to plan a trip

to the United States, and no later than 72 hours before departure. ESTA has, however, been designed to accommodate last-minute and emergency travellers.Q Can a third party (i.e. travel agent) apply on behalf of a client?A Yes.Q If someone has an EU passport, must they still complete the process? A Yes.Q How long is it valid for?A Esta is valid for up to two years or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first. It is valid for multiple entries into the US but is not a guarantee of admission to the country.

In a recent bid to restore Paris’s reputation as a party destination for tourists from around the world, a campaign has been launched by the Parisian music industry.

A petition was drafted to try and stop Paris from losing its tourism appeal on the international cultural scene. Recent anti-tobacco laws and growing pressure for silence left many bars, concert halls and nightclubs in a tricky position. Now the

industry is looking for government support to revitalise Paris’s party reputation. The petition has accumulated over 14 000 signatures.

Government is backing the move, with The City of Paris launching a dedicated website so that visitors can find the perfect venue to have a drink or listen to some live music. The Paris Nightlife Guide (http://www.parisnightlife.fr) provides detailed listings of nightlife venues throughout the city, along with an interactive map so that visitors can find bars and clubs in close proximity to their hotel.

InterContinental opens second Paris hotelINTERCONTINENTAL Hotels Group has opened the InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau. The hotel, located near the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées, was previously the Crowne Plaza Paris Champs-Elysées.

It features 55 rooms across three heritage buildings overlooking a central courtyard. There are also two penthouse suites, including a terrace suite with a private roof patio looking on to the Eiffel Tower.

The hotel will complement

the existing InterContinental Paris Le Grand, which originally opened as a hotel in 1867. Didier Boiden, InterContinental Hotel Group’s vice president of operations for France says: “Travellers from around the world affectionately refer to the InterContinetal Paris Le Grand as the ‘grand palais’ among Paris’s luxury hotels.

"With the opening of InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau, we now have a charming petit palais, located in another one of the capital’s most desirable addresses.”

Air France announces summer scheduleAIR France KLM has announced that its summer 2010 schedule will remain practically unchanged compared with 2009. New destinations have been added to its network though, including Abu Dhabi and Bata, Equatorial Guinea. Bari, Italy, will be operated in codeshare with Alitalia.

At the end of the season, the whole of the long-haul fleet with the exception of the Boeing 777s operating on the Caribbean-Indian Ocean network and the A380s in service, will be fitted with the new Premium Voyageur cabin. This is an intermediary cabin between economy and business, intended for customers looking for more comfort at a more affordable fare than business class.

The airline will operate daily services to JNB from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport with the A380 instead of 12 weekly frequencies operated by a B777. During the Football World Cup, Air France will operate an additional three daily flights to Johannesburg.

TRAFALGAR Tours has introduced a new family experience tour based on its First Class London and Paris eight-day tour, called Magic and Make Believe.

Days one to four are spent in London, during which time travellers will be taken on an excursion to Royal Windsor, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and

Buckingham Palace. Guests will stay at the Thistle Marble Arch. From days five to seven, guests will be taken across the Channel to Calais and then Paris. Sightseeing tours include an ascent of the Eiffel Tower, views of Notre Dame cathedral and a drive along the Champs-Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe. Guests will stay at the Novotel Tour Eiffel.

On Day eight, guests travel back through northern France to take the Channel ferry back to Dover and London.

Prices start at R10 575 per adult sharing and R7 410 per child between the ages of five and 17 and include a buffet breakfast daily.

Definite departures have already been confirmed and only limited space is available.

A city of surprises

ADDIS Ababa is a city filled with high-rise buildings, churches, restaurants and taxis. Its distinctive African flavour mingles into the cityscape, with goats, bicycles and carts winding

their way through the streets.

Addis Ababa is a lush and growing city. TNW uncovers what the destination has to offer travellers heading to Ethiopia. Travel tips

Suggest the Addis Ababa City Tour offered by Tribes:● Full-day tour: National Museum (the home of Lucy, probably the most famous hominid skeleton in the world), Merkato (the city’s commercial centre and one of the largest open-air markets in the world), St George’s Cathedral, Abebech Gobena orphanage centre, ethnographic museum and Entoto Hill’s Scenic Drive.● Half-day tour: National Museum, Entoto Hills, Merkato and Abebech Gobena orphanage centre.

Other attractions include Africa Hall (where the Organization of African Unity was founded in 1963 and is now the headquarters of one of the UN’s six regional commissions), Trinity Cathedral (the most ornate example of modern urban cathedrals) as well as the Entoto, Mariam and Raguel (Elias) churches.

Top View Restaurant is well-hidden in the hills of Addis and after a winding drive through residential areas it suddenly appears, offering a spectacular view of the city. It serves excellent Italian and local cuisine as well as good desserts, quite a rarity in Ethiopia. The restaurant also has a beautiful meeting and events area with glass walls where guests can enjoy the view over a welcome drink.

This area is separated from the main restaurant and is perfect for private functions. For a more cultural experience try the YOD Abyssinia National Restaurant and Antica-Elfign Traditional Restaurant. Large groups should book beforehand to secure a table. Bookings can also be made through a tour operator.

Addis Ababa has two five-star hotels, the Hilton Addis Ababa and the Sheraton Addis, as well as a growing number of tourist-class hotels.

A 10-minute drive from the airport, the Hilton Addis Ababa offers a range of dining options and leisure facilities including a health club, shopping, tennis, Jacuzzi and heated pool. The business centre has audio-visual equipment rental, high-speed Internet access, business phone and service cellular phone rental, express mail fax, office rental photocopying service, printer and secretarial

service. There are four meeting rooms, including a grand ballroom that has the capacity to host up to 1 000 people.

Set in mountainous countryside, 2 400 metres above sea level, is the Sheraton Addis. The hotel is seven kilometres from Bole International Airport.

The hotel has one of the largest banqueting and conference facilities in Ethiopia, with over 1 500 sqm of meeting space. Other features include a business centre, 11 restaurant and lounge options, heated outdoor pools, a sauna, and Jacuzzi.

Where to stay

Where to have a business lunch

● Shuttles to/from the airport are available from major hotels, however some hotels do charge extra for use of a shuttle service.● Taxis are available on arrival, however it’s recommended that travellers organise a meet-and-greet from either the hotel or tour operator. Only advise travellers to opt for the self-drive option if they are confident about tackling the roads. Avis and other local car-rental companies are based in Addis Ababa. ● Dinknesh Ethiopia Tours is a reputable tour company in Addis Ababa offering tours including transport to major sites in the capital.

● Ethiopian Airlinesoperates daily flights from Johannesburg, departing at 13h55 arriving in Addis Ababa at 20h30. Return flights from Addis Ababa depart at 08h50 and arrive in Johannesburg at 13h15. The airline will be using a B767 on its Addis Ababa-Johannesburg route daily, replacing its B737. The aircraft change will take place from June 1 to July 31 to coincide with the 2010 Fifa World Cup. ● Kenya Airways operates

flights daily to Addis Ababa via Nairobi. The flight leaves Johannesburg at 00h40 and arrives in Nairobi at 05h45; it departs Nairobi at 07h35 and arrives in Addis Ababa at 09h45. Return flights operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays leaving Addis Ababa at 04h20, arriving in Nairobi at 06h25. Flights depart Nairobi at 07h25 and arrive in Johannesburg at 10h35. All flights are operated by a Boeing 737.

Getting there

Getting around

Expect to pay at least R40 for a mineral water from the mini bar at the Hilton Addis Ababa.Checking out: Check-out can be tedious and travellers should allow plenty of time.Payment: Paying by credit card is not always possible at some hotels. Visitors should declare all currency on arrival and only change at banks and authorised foreign exchange dealers. The Ethiopian currency is the birr. To change birr to dollars on leaving the country, visitors will be asked to produce bank receipts.Visas: South African citizens require a visa for entry into Ethiopia. Visas can be obtained upon arrival in Addis Ababa for US$20. IN an effort to improve education standards in Cape Town’s impoverished Cape Flats communities, Lufthansa Global Telesales (GTS) and Help Alliance – a non-profit organisation run by Lufthansa employees – have opened iThemba School Capricorn, an English-medium pre-primary school at the Vrygrond informal settlement near Muizenberg.

The area has an estimated 70% unemployment rate and HIV/Aids, drug and alcohol abuse are prevalent. The school will teach numeracy and literacy and provide good nutrition to 50 children a year, each intake being taught for three years.

Teaching will be done in English to give them a better

head start for primary school. “The iThemba project is about giving these children a future that is based on all the lessons that they learn here.

"What the children learn here in three years will become the foundation for the rest of their lives. iThemba means hope, and where there is hope there is life,” says LH GTS ceo, Birgit Thümecke.

LH GTS has called on the rest of the private sector to help, saying its involvement could help improve current matric results.

More than 217 000 Grade 12 pupils failed their National Senior Certificate exam last year, while fewer than 20% of those who passed achieved university exemption. n

SOUTH African Airways denies outright it has had any involvement in

collusion on ticket pricing for the 2010 World Cup.

The airline, which had been lambasted recently for failing to appear at a parliamentary briefing to explain its 2010 interests, said it had held discussions with various players in the airline industry on requirements for the 2010 World Cup, but that these discussions were limited to “matters of logistics” and “capacity requirements”.

“On November 25 SAA received an email from a competitor airline containing suggestions that SAA believes could give rise to inferences of conduct that is in contravention of SA competition law.

“Following an assessment of the risks involved, SAA made a decision on December 1 to inform the Competition Commission about the communication. At the same time, SAA applied for leniency in the event that a decision was later made by the commission to refer the matter to the Tribunal for prosecution.”

SAA’s acting ceo, Chris Smythe, added that the airline planned to operate 24 hours a day during the World Cup. This, he said, would result in higher costs and to offset these costs, SAA fares during peak times had been increased.

“Only 20% of SAA’s published domestic fares during the World Cup include a 50%

increase in full-fare business and economy class in the highest fare category.”

SAA, he said, “is not charging a distorted or unfair premium but one that attempts to cover increases in operating costs”.

A recent Democratic Alliance survey indicates that the airline’s prices are, however, still two to three times higher than any other airline in the country. DA shadow tourism minister, Greg Krumbrock, says the study shows that SAA’s prices are “far off the market equilibrium rate being charged by commercial airlines in this country”.

“Our study shows that the cost of flights being charged by SAA the day before major World Cup matches far exceeds the ticket prices of their competitors, hinting that SAA may wait until flights on other airlines are booked up, and then use the resulting monopoly to charge extortionate prices.”

The survey, explains the DA, looks at flights for the quarter final, semi final and final of the World Cup. “We searched for flights the day prior to the match, from Cape Town to Johannesburg, or Johannesburg to Cape Town (as applicable), and listed the least expensive flights on offer for each airline.

“We used a set of flights two months from today’s date and two months prior to the final, as a control date to assess flight prices prior to the tournament. For this set of flights, we used an aggregate of the Cape

Town to Johannesburg and Johannesburg to Cape Town prices, where these two flights were not already equal in price. Prices were obtained from each airline’s website.”

service will depart Kruger Mpumalanga International at 12h00.

Stuart Cochrane, Comair’s executive manager for sales and route development, said the airline’s increased capacity would allow travellers easy access to Mpumalanga. “It will also raise the profle of the province that has so many beautiful experiences to offer.” n
