The air feels heavier, it’s humid here. But it also feels refreshing and smells good and clean. You can see for miles. There is no smog. I can hear wind and through the air, birds and people. Their is richness in the oxygen. Every time I take a breath, it feels more refreshing than any breath I take back home.

Departure

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need

more successful people. But it does

desparately need more

peacemakers, healers,

restorers, storytellers,

and lovers of every kind.

It needs people who live

well in their places. It

needs people of moral

courage willing to join

the fight to make the

world habitable and

humane. And these

qualities have little to

do with success as our

culture has defined it.”

-- Quote from the first

day of class readings.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest has some of the most amazing views I have ever seen. We hiked to the continental divide between the Pacific and the Caribbean. There seemed to be an actual difference in the two sides. It could be all in my head, but the Caribbean side smelled sweeter.

Beyond the Clouds

Antonio was our group’s guide through the cloud forest. He does freelance night hikes. I thought that was a really interesting and specific job description, so I got his info. A big plus side of this outing-- Hummingbirds will land on your hands.

Strangler figs are twisting root-like parasitic plant life. They surround trees and use all their nutrients until the tree dies and nothing is left but the strangler fig. I perceive it as a force of na-ture that has elements of “survival of the fittest.” I want to ask the strangler fig if it believes it’s a good or bad force of nature.

I encounter people that look just like me but we cannot speak the same language. We communicate through half phrases and gestures. I encounter people every day who have become my very good friends in a very short period of time.

Mystery Mountain

A very small amount but more than Ive ever perceived before. This is my first time out of United States territory and I feel as if I have learned so much. The world is a huge place and I know I can learn so much more.

In each and every place we visit, I find breathtaking views of Costa Rica and its mountains. Many times, I can see all the way to the bay leading into the pacific ocean. I like to just take a minute and think about the beauty of these views. Reflecting on how lucky and fortunate we are to be able to experience this amazing place is important. All whole group likes to make pit stops just to photgraph the myriad beautiful landscapes

Sweet and Simple

Human made artifacts: machines to: grind coffee fruit, shell coffee beans, shell cacao beans, melt chocolate, grind cacao beans, blend chocolate substance and milk to make hot chocolate, get the juice out of sugarcane.

Organic Entities: Motmots, agoutis, coatis, strangler figs, leaves that grow with holes in them, buttress roots and roots that grow from trees to the ground

Homemade Love

Every meal served at the Comedor is homeade from very local sources. A decent proportion of the food is produced on campus. I enjoy every second of eating here. All the new things I have tried are delicious. Except papaya, I just cannot get over that taste.

My favorite meal is breakfast because of the plantains. Rice and beans I have grown bored with, but never the plantains.

The hot chocolate here is divine. I could drink it breakfast, lunch and dinner if they would let me. I am definitely “that guy” that waits around for hot chocolate after dinner.

I encounter animals I have never seen before or thought existed. We communicate to each other by looks. Most of the time, I am looking and the animals are scurrying away. I get lucky when a friendly coati comes along.

Everything in my natural surroundings is beautiful. The rain makes everything more vibrant. Costa Rica also has some of the strangest but most interesting plant life. All of it is efficent and beautiful at the same time.

I wonder how old these ways of natural life are. The trees, plant life and landscapes seem ancient.

There is so much life around me that can be experienced if I just stop for a second and still myself, pay attention.
