The afternoon flight arrives with plenty of time to unpack, have drinks, appetizers, and dinner. The flight time from Nassau to Mangrove Cay is 20 minutes. The Flamingo Air check in counter is located in the domestic terminal at the Nassau Airport. Cost per round trip flight in a Cessna 402 is $120 per person. Baggage allowance is 44 lbs. per person. Please use soft-sided luggage.

LeAir has flights available on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in both the morning and afternoon.

All travelers must have return or continuing tickets to pass through customs. A visa is not required for Americans, Canadians or most European countries. Residents of other countries should contact the Bahamian embassy in their country to double check that a visa is not required.

You will complete an immigration card upon arrival. It will be checked at your first point of entry and a copy will be given to you. Be careful not to lose this copy as it must be given to Immigration upon departure.

THE LODGE

About the Lodge Mangrove Cay Club is one of the finest, if not the finest, facility in the Bahamas for bonefishing. Liz and Alton Bain designed and supervised the construction. Their attention to detail is evident throughout, and it is a wonderful place to spend the non-fishing hours of your visit to the Bahamas. Both the cottages and the main lodge have ample air conditioning.

Mangrove consists of 4 bungalows each which contain two separate suites accommodating two anglers per suite. Each suite has a bedroom overlooking the ocean, a large living room, and a very spacious bathroom. Each suite has a balcony jutting towards the ocean and is appointed with two chairs and a table. It is a great place to have a drink at the end of the day and a wonderful place to to recharge your batteries after a day of fishing.

In addition to the cottages, there is a stunning main lodge at Mangrove which sits behind a large patio overlooking the water. The lodge consists of a dining room, a bar, and a very comfortable seating area. Like the cottages, the lodge is very tastefully decorated and is a testament to Liz and Alton’s dedication to the art of hospitality.

Problems during your weekMangrove Cay Club operates as smoothly as any lodge out there, but occasionally there are issues. When they come up, the only way we can fix them is if you let us know. Please don’t hesitate to pull Liz or Alton aside at any time.

They are true pros and will do everything they can to address the issue.

ElectricityElectricity at Mangrove is 120 volts/60 cycles which is compatible with all US appliances. Electricity is on twenty four hours per day.

CommunicationsThere is wireless internet in the lodge. There is satellite tv and a fax machine inside the lodge for use by the guests. Please feel free to use the voice over internet telephone for any of your calls as it is a complimentary part of your package.

Emergency FacilitiesMangrove Cay has limited facilities for emergency medical situations. Nassau has several hospitals and dozens of non-stop flights to the US every day in the event of an emergency. As with all remote destinations, travel insurance makes good sense. Please visit Travel Guard or Global Rescue for travel/medical evacuation insurance.

Fly ShopThe Mangrove Cay Club also maintains a small tackle shop and typically has a good supply of flies, tippet, leaders and extra fly lines in the event you need them for your trip. You can purchase most of the bonefish flies you will need in our fly shop.

FISHING

About Andros and the fishingAndros Island is the largest island in the Bahamas, 25 miles west of New Providence Island and about 125 miles east-southeast of Florida. A flat, heavily forested island, Andros extends about 100 miles from north to south and spans about 45 miles from east to west at the widest point. The island is criss-crossed with creeks, bights, and is home to some of the best bonefish habitat in the world. It is impossible to fish all of the water available to you in a week of fishing. Whether you like to wade fish or fish from a boat, you will have plenty of water to explore.

Andros can roughly be divided into three distinct parts; the creeks and bights, the hard sand flats of the East and Southern side, and the wilderness of the west side, aka “The Land of Giants.” The bonefish in the Middle Bight and the South Bight are plentiful and average 3 to 5 pounds with regular shots at fish weighing 6 to 10 pounds. The fish of the outer, hard sand flats of the east and south sides of Andros also average between 3 to 5 pounds with bigger fish always lurking in singles and doubles. Andros is home to some of the largest bonefish in the world. Double digit fish are a distinct possibility.

Weather & WaterAndros is blessed with abundant sun which makes for good sight fishing conditions. Temperatures during most of the year will reach highs in the 80’s and 90’s. The sun is bright, so please take it seriously and bring your sun block. Also keep in mind that the deck of the boat can get hot so shoes or socks are suggested. Polarized sunglasses are a must.

Because of our location inside the Middle bight, we are typically able to fish under almost any conditions. Like all lodges, there are some days when, due to wind, it is simply not safe to put the boats in the water. On those days, we will do whatever we can to get you out fishing. That could include anything from wading flats near the lodge, fishing more protected bays or accessing wadeable flats with the power catamaran. We recognize that happy fishermen usually return another year, and we want you to enjoy your stay and to feel as though we have done everything possible to make your trip a success.

Regulations & ConservationAll fishing at the lodge is catch and release; do not feel any obligation to keep a barracuda or other fish. You are welcome to fish with either fly rods or conventional tackle but we do recommend barbless hooks.

Bonefish evolved their incredible burst speed to avoid being eaten by predators. Since they are the favorite food of sharks and barracuda it is very important to release them in good condition and give them a chance to survive. Please be careful when handling bonefish and be sure to fight the fish quickly. If it has been a long difficult battle, please consider taking photos of the fish only in the water. Trophy bonefish are old fish and what makes our fishery special so please take good care of them. We hope all anglers realize that the release is more important than a photo.

We do not recommend ultra light leaders and long fights with loose drags that tire the fish excessively. Leader should not be lighter than 10 lb and we recommend 12 and even 16 lb leaders.

For photographs, please revive the fish before removing it from the water for the photograph and please keep the fish out of the water for as short a time as possible. Handle the fish with clean, wet hands as little as possible. Please allow your guide to take the time to revive the fish before releasing.

We follow the recommendations of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust’s “Best Practices for Bonefish Catch & Release”. Detailed information is found at www.tarbone.org

A bit about bonefishBonefish are the target species at Mangrove. Bonefish have three basic modes of behavior;

1. FeedingBonefish feed on the bottom, burying their snouts in the sand or silt. While feeding on very shallow flats their wavering tails are often visible out of the water. In deeper water their tails are not visible but the fish can still be seen. While bonefish are feeding, the condition of the surface

Page 8: TRAVEL & FISHING INFORMATION · 2017-04-04 · TRAVEL & FISHING INFORMATION . 2 . MANGROVE CAY CLUB . Table of Contents ... minute transfer to the lodge. Liz Bain, partner and manager,

FISHING

of the water affects their feeling of security. Bonefish can be more nervous in very calm water. Conditions will determine how best to present the fly. On most days there is a slight chop or ripple on the surface and the fly must be presented three to five feet in front of them. On very still days the fly should be cast further from the fish and stripped back into his area of awareness.

2. MuddingDuring the warmer months very large schools of bonefish will often back off the shoreline into about 5 to 10 feet of cooler water. As they grub for food they stir up the bottom creating a visible cloud of mud, referred to as “milk”. This cloud of mud moves as the bonefish move and makes these bones feel quite secure because they are not visible to predators. Often the angler can catch

one fish after another without spooking the school. It is generally not our practice to fish muds because the desired challenge of sight fishing is eliminated. However, we will fish muds with you at your request.

3. TravelingTraveling bonefish are intent on changing location but are very aware of their surroundings and not necessarily interested in feeding. When casting to traveling bonefish place your offering well ahead of the fish and let it settle. Your guide will tell you when the fish is in range and when to strip.

Although Andros has earned its name in the fishing world for its bonefishing, there are a variety of other species out there as well. At the top of the food chain, these tough flats predators offer some outstanding action on a fly or lure. They will strike anything that darts away from them in an injured manner. When hooked, they are some of the fastest and most powerful fish to be taken on light-tackle.

Tarpon and PermitTarpon are not present in our waters on a regular basis, but we certainly come across them. They range in size from 20 lbs to 200 lbs. Tarpon are the largest, strongest, and most acrobatic of flats fish. Even juvenile fish will put your angling skills to the test and strain your tackle. We highly recommend having a rod set up for Tarpon each day as the moment of opportunity does not last long.

We also see permit on occasion. They are by far the most difficult, picky and frustrating fish you will encounter on the flats. Permit are very finicky about what they eat. They will often charge your fly, only to stop at the last moment and refuse it. When you are presenting the fly, focus first and foremost on landing your fly near the fish and getting the slack out of your line. If the fish appears interested

do nothing but let him eat. If the fish doesn’t seem to be reacting move your fly slightly. If he doesn’t see the fly cast again.

Andros also has good off-shore fishing available for Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna. If you would like to try some off-shore fishing, let us know and we will arrange it if conditions allow.

Fly Fishing TechniqueOn the flats, your guide will be standing on the poling tower poling the boat while scanning for fish. You will be standing, waiting, on the front deck of the boat with your rod in one hand and your fly in the other. You can allow some line to trail in the water but don’t have more line in the water than you can comfortably pick up to cast or enough line out of the boat so that it gets caught beneath the boat.

When you are not fishing from the boat, you will be

We want your visit to Mangrove’s fishery to meet your expectations. Our guides

have years of experience and share your goal of having a great, productive day on

the water. Specifically, if you want to wade more, or target any particular species,

please let your guide or us know. If any part of the fishing experience is less than

expected, please let Liz or Alton know. We will do our best to rectify the situation.

wading the flats. When wading, do not move too quickly. Scan the water and wait for the fish to move towards you. If you see the fish moving on one particular path, you should move into that path so that you can be in position to present the fly to the fish. As always, make sure you breath before you cast. You always have time. Don’t rush your cast.

Except for barracuda or laid up tarpon, fish are always moving. Scan laterally, slowly, as the boat moves. Look for the flash of an exposed tail, nervous water, a bulge, wave or push on top of the water, or the shadow of a cruising fish.

If you do not see the fish do not cast until your guide asks you to. He will put the boat in position for the cast, getting every one on board out of the way of your fly. He will tell you how far to cast, in which direction (referencing the dial of a clock) and tell you of the movement of the fish. Listen to your guide and cast even if you don’t see the fish to take advantage of every opportunity.

When casting to a fish that is moving towards you always pull your fly away from the fish — never toward it. You will occasionally cast to fish that are moving away from you. In that instance you will want to put your fly in front of the fish and strip back to it.

Allow the fly to settle on the bottom and strip it off of the bottom with long, slow strips. If the fish sees the fly, he will pick it up from a dead stop. The fish will usually pop its tail up as it takes the fly and the hook should be set immediately. Your guide will see the fish pick up the fly before you feel it. Many bonefish turn violently at the moment they feel the hook. It is important to set the hook with a long slow strip. Too much pressure can snap the leader as the fish begins to run. When the fish is on and running, make sure your fly line is clear and slowly raise your rod.

Occasionally the fish will run toward you, in which case you will have to quickly strip in more line to maintain pressure. Then the fish will change direction and you can clear the line. Bonefish have tough mouths and having very sharp hooks is important. Re-sharpen hooks with a hook hone after every three or four fish.

If you have refusals change flies or make sure there is no unwanted scent (as from sunscreen on your hands) on the fly by allowing your guide to rub mud from the bottom on your fly.

Please be certain to pinch down the barbs on the hooks of your flies with long-nosed pliers. This makes it easier to release fish unharmed, and many people feel the barbless hook actually more easily penetrates the tough tissue of the bonefish’s mouth and you minimize the risk of injury to yourself and others.

Spinning TechniqueSome of our guest use spinning gear and Mangrove does have spin rods at the lodge for your use. If you would like a break during the day or enjoy fishing with more conventional tackle, Mangrove is a great venue. Spin fishing for bonefish can be very effective when done correctly. The most important thing to remember is that the presentation of bait or a lure is not as delicate as that of a fly. When presenting your lure, it is best to cast 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 m) in front of the fish. When the fish reaches the vicinity of the lure, begin a slow retrieve. The approach is similar in that you will pole or wade flats until you find the fish. Blind casting the channels can also be an effective way to get into fish.
