questions, you need to select the most appropriate response from a drop-down list. The Self Assessment
questions, the list of responses and details of suitable evidence can be found in Appendix 1
Your responses to the Self Assessment questions will be validated at the interview against the evidence in

2013 Applicant Guide Page 7
Eligibility and Longlisting
The eligibility criteria for ST3 Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery are listed in the 2013 Person Specification.
It is an applicant’s responsibility to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria. All applications will be
assessed against the eligibility criteria during longlisting. Any applications which do not meet the eligibility
criteria will be longlisted out of the process and will not progress to the next stage.
GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
You will need to hold full General Medical Council registration status and a current licence to practice by
the time of appointment1 (in most cases this will be 7th August 2013). You will be asked to confirm that you
will meet this requirement on page 2 of your application form. Any offers made will be subject to you
meeting this requirement by the time of appointment.
MRCS
Applicants must have successfully completed MRCS at the time of interview. If you are invited to attend an
interview you must provide evidence that you have successfully completed MRCS when you attend.
If you have not successfully completed MRCS at the time of application, but are expecting results of a
recent examination by the interview date you are eligible to apply. If you are invited to interview, you must
bring evidence that you have passed ALL parts with you.
Courses
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the following courses by the time of interview:
ATLS or equivalent
CRISP or equivalent
A Basic Surgical Skills Course
If you are invited to attend an interview, you must provide evidence that you have successfully completed
these courses when you attend.
Assessment of Competency
Applicants must have achieved CT1 and CT2 competences in surgery by the time of appointment. There
are a number of ways this can be demonstrated:
If you are currently in a UK Core Training programme, you do not need to provide any further
evidence at the time of application. Any offer of a training post will be conditional on you achieving a
satisfactory ARCP outcome for CT2 by the start date of the post to which you are appointed.
If you have already completed a UK Core Training programme you must attach scanned copies of
your ARCP for CT2 or a Core Certificate of Completion to your application.
Applicants who are not able to provide evidence of their CT1 and CT2 Core Competences may
provide the following alternative evidence by attaching scanned copies to their application:
• ARCP or RITA documents showing satisfactory outcome
• Educational / Clinical Supervisor reports showing satisfactory outcome
• Completed Certificate C (Alternative Certificate of Core Competence). This can be
downloaded from the Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery website.
Scanned copies of any evidence must be attached to your application; alternatively you may email
them to specialty.recru[email protected]. Please mark your email “SUPPORTING
DOCUMENTS -T&O” this must be received no later than 12:00 (midday) on 15th February 2013.
1 The time of appointment refers to the start date of the post to which you are appointed.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 8
Immigration/Right to Work
You must have the right to work as a doctor in training in the UK. Your application will be assessed based
on your immigration status at the time of application.
Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship in order to take up a post are eligible to apply but in most cases will
be subject to the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT). Due to the expected high number of applications it
is unlikely that the RLMT will be satisfied by this recruitment process.
Career Progression and Experience
You must provide a complete employment history going back to completion of your primary medical degree
on your application form. If you are in a rotational training programme, please also list posts that you are
due to rotate to up until the end of July 2013 or until completion of your Core Training programme if this is
later. You must provide a reason for employment gaps of more than four weeks.
By the time of appointment2 you must have completed 24 months in surgery (not including Foundation
modules) of which at least 10 months experience is in Trauma based Trauma & Orthopaedic posts with a
major commitment to Orthopaedic Trauma surgery. All time periods stated refer to full time equivalent.
English Language Skills
All applicants will need to provide evidence of their English language skills at interview. This can be done in
one of the following ways:
If your undergraduate training was in English and in the UK you do not need to provide evidence
other than your degree certificate.
If your undergraduate training was in English, but not in the UK, you will need to provide written
evidence of this. Suitable evidence would include an original letter or certificate from the institution
where you qualified confirming that the language of instruction and examination was English.
If your undergraduate training was not in English, you will need to provide written evidence of your
English language skills E.g. your academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
results showing the scores below, to be achieved in a single sitting within 24 months at time of
application:
o Overall – 7.0
o Speaking – 7.0
o Listening – 7.0
o Reading – 7.0
o Writing – 7.0
If you believe you have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples you
must provide supporting evidence such as a letter from a UK medical supervisor or employer
attesting to your competence in English at the appropriate level.
Your application form must show how you will demonstrate your English language skills if you attend an
interview.
2 The time of appointment refers to the start date of the post to which you are appointed.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 9
Trainees released or removed from a training post or programme

Deputy of the deanery in which you worked at the time you were released, removed or relinquished from
your training programme.
This letter must be received by the Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery by the application closing date.
Should the Postgraduate Dean not support your application, appeal may be made to the Yorkshire and the
Humber Deanery whose decision will be final.

You are not eligible to apply if you already hold, or are eligible to hold a Certificate of Completion of
Training (CCT) in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. You are not eligible to apply if you are currently on the

No information relating to your declaration form will be made available to any members of the selection
panel at any time during the recruitment process.

leave, ill health etc.) only. Deferred entry to training programmes will not be allowed for any other reason.
Refer to the Gold Guide for more information about deferring start dates.
If you wish to request a deferred start date you should indicate this on page 1 of your application form. If
you are appointed to a training post, this information will be passed to the UoA to which you are allocated

Interview Format
The interviews will consist of four “stations” each lasting 15 minutes. Each station has been designed to
assess the selection criteria on the Person Specification. You will rotate round all four stations during the
interview process.
Portfolio Station
Before you enter the portfolio station, the assessors will have spent 15 minutes reading through
your portfolio and validating the Self Assessment questions from your application form. The
validated Self Assessment questions will produce a score which will contribute to your overall
portfolio station score.
Once you enter the station there will be 2 portfolio questions, each lasting approximately 7 ½
minutes. You will be scored independently by two assessors.
Clinical Scenario Station
There will be 2 clinical scenario questions including one anatomy based scenario. Each question
will last approximately 7 ½ minutes. You will be scored independently by two assessors.
Interactive Station
In this station you will be observed interacting with actors who will role-play a scenario with you.
There will be two parts to the scenario each lasting approximately 7 ½ minutes. You will be scored
independently by two assessors.
Technical Skills Station
In this station you will be asked to carry out tasks designed to assess your technical skills.
This station is being piloted in 2013 and the scores will not contribute to your overall interview
score. The purpose of this station is to assess its suitability for use in future recruitment processes.
Scoring and Ranking
Your performance in each station will be scored using a structured scoring system. The scores from each
interview station will be combined to produce your overall interview score. The maximum available overall
score is 120.
After the interviews you will be ranked against all other candidates. Your ranking will be based on your
overall interview score. In the event that your scores tie with other candidates’, we will look at your
individual interview station scores.
Lay Representatives
A number of Lay Representatives will be present on each interview day. The Lay Representatives may sit
in some of your interview stations to observe the process. The Lay Representative will not score or assess
your performance in the station; they are there to ensure the process is fair and consistent.
Observers
There will also be a number of observers present. Again, they may sit in some of your interview stations.
Their role is to assess the recruitment process, and observe the interview panels; they are not there to
assess your performance.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 14
Confidentiality
You should ensure that the content of the interview assessments remains confidential and must not be
discussed with other candidates or published where they can be accessed by other candidates. This
includes on websites, online forums or discussion groups and all other forms of social media.
Remember, this is a competitive process and you may reduce your own chances of appointment by giving
an unfair advantage to other candidates.
Travel and Subsistence expenses
Applicants attending interviews are entitled to a travel and subsistence allowance. A claim form can be
downloaded from http://www.yorksandhumberdeanery.nhs.uk/specialty_recruitment_2013/interviews.aspx
You are advised to read the guidance document in full before incurring any expenses.
Completed claim forms should be submitted to:
Specialty Recruitment
Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery
Leeds Office
Willow Terrace Road
University of Leeds
Leeds
LS2 9JT
Claim forms must be received within three months of your interview date. Claim forms received after three
months will not be processed. Receipts must be attached for all travel and subsistence claimed except
mileage.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 15
UK Offers System
All deaneries and specialties will be using the UK Offers System to make offers to training posts in 2013.
Verifying your Account
After the application closing date you will be sent a link to log in to the UK Offers System asking you to log
in, verify your identity and confirm your email address. You must do this within 14 days of receiving the
email. Make sure that you provide an email address that you will have regular access to, as all offers will
be made through the email address that you provide.
Selecting Your Preferences
After the interviews, you will be asked to rank your preferences using the UK Offers System. You will
receive an email when Preferencing opens. In the UK Offers System, click on Sub-preferences to access
the list of preferences.
There are two lists labelled “Preferenced” and “Not Wanted” By default all preferences will appear in the
“Not Wanted” list. You can move preferences between the two lists using the arrow buttons. Once you have
moved preferences to the “Preferenced” list, you can move them up and down the list using the arrows.
You should put your preferences in rank order with your most preferred option to the top of the list and your
least preferred option at the bottom.
If you do not complete your preferences before the deadline they will remain in the “Not Wanted”
list and you will receive no offers.
Please note: There is no advantage to be gained by ranking preferences with the most posts high up your
preference list. There is also no disadvantage to ranking a preference with few (or even zero) posts high up
your list.
If you would be not prepared to accept a particular post, then you should not rank it. By ranking a
preference you are stating that you would be prepared to accept that preference. If you are offered a post
and you reject it you will receive no further offers. It is important that you think carefully about this when
completing your preferences and leave any posts that you would not be prepared to accept in the “Not
Wanted” list.
Allocation to Posts
Successful candidates will be allocated to posts in rank order:
The highest ranked candidate will be allocated to their first preferenced post.
The second ranked candidate will be allocated to their first preferenced post unless it has already
been allocated to the first ranked candidate in which case they will be allocated their second
preferenced post.
The third ranked candidate will be allocated to their first preferenced post unless it has already been
allocated to the first or second ranked candidates. If it has, they will be allocated their second
preferenced post unless this has been allocated to the first or second ranked candidates in which
case they will be offered their third preference.
This process will continue until all posts are allocated or there are no more appointable candidates.
Any offer made through this recruitment process is an offer of an allocation to a training programme; it is
not an offer of employment. Offers of employment can only be by an employing organisation following
completion of satisfactory pre-employment checks.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 16
Receiving and Responding to Offers
If you are offered a post you will have 48 hours from the time of your offer, including weekends and bank
holidays, to decide whether to accept, reject or hold it. You must respond to the offer through the UK
Offers System. No other form of response will be accepted.
IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND TO YOUR OFFER WITHIN 48 HOURS, THE OFFER WILL EXPIRE AND
THE POST WILL BE OFFERED TO ANOTHER APPLICANT. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY FURTHER
OFFERS.
If you are offered a post you have the following five options:
1. Accept
If you accept an offer without upgrades you are confirming that you wish to accept the post you have
been offered. You will not receive an upgraded offer even if a post further up your preference list
becomes available.
If you accept an ST post, you will not be eligible to receive offers from another recruitment process (e.g.
General Surgery or Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Wales or Northern Ireland) with the exception
of offers for ACF posts.
If you accept a LAT post, you will still be eligible to receive offers for ST, CT and ACF posts from
another recruitment process but you will not be eligible to receive other offers for LAT posts.
2. Accept with Upgrades
If you are not offered your highest ranked preference, you will be able to choose the ‘Accept with
upgrade’ option. This option will not be available after 27th May 2013.
By choosing this option, you are confirming that you wish to accept the post you have been offered but
that you also want to be considered for an upgrade to a post higher up your preference list.
If a post further up your preference list becomes available your current offer will automatically be
upgraded. You will be notified of any offer upgrades by email. If your offer is upgraded you will
automatically be deemed to have accepted the upgrade. Your original offer cannot be reinstated.
Upgrades will continue to be made until 27th May 2013.
You can opt out of upgrades at any time by logging into your UK Offers System account and following
the link from the applicant’s home screen.
If you accept an ST post with upgrades, you will not be eligible to receive offers from another
recruitment process (e.g. General Surgery or Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Wales or Northern
Ireland) with the exception of an ACF post.
If you accept a LAT post with upgrades, you will still be eligible to receive ST, CT and ACF offers from
another recruitment process but you will not be eligible to receive other LAT offers.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 17
3. Hold
You may hold your offer if you are waiting for an offer from another recruitment process (e.g. General
Surgery or Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Wales or Northern Ireland). This option will not be
available after 20th May 2013.
You may hold your offer until 20th May 2013. During this time you may continue to receive offers from
other recruitment processes.
You will not receive an upgraded offer from this recruitment process even if a post higher up your
preference list becomes available.
You can only hold one offer at a time. If you hold your offer, any other held offers will be
rejected. If you hold your offer and subsequently hold another offer, your original held offer will
be rejected.
Before the holding deadline (20th May 2013) you must confirm whether you wish to accept, accept with
upgrades or reject the offer. If no action is taken by the deadline, the held offer will expire and will
be REJECTED. You will receive no further offers from this recruitment process.
4. Hold with Upgrades
If you are not offered your highest ranked preference, you will be able to choose the ‘Hold with
upgrade’ option. This option will not be available after 20th May 2013.
You may hold your offer if you are waiting for an offer from another recruitment process (e.g. General
Surgery). You may hold your offer until 20th May 2013. During this time you may continue to receive
offers from other recruitment processes.
You can only hold one offer at a time. If you hold your offer with upgrades, any other held offers will
be rejected. If you hold your offer with upgrades and subsequently hold another offer, your original held
offer will be rejected.
Before the holding deadline (20th May 2013) you must confirm whether you wish to accept, accept with
upgrades or reject the offer. If no action is taken by the deadline, the held offer will expire and will
be REJECTED. You will receive no further offers from this recruitment process.
5. Reject
If you do not wish to accept or hold your offer you can reject it. If you reject an offer, you will receive no
further offers from this recruitment process. You will still be considered for other recruitment processes
that you are taking part in.

2013 Applicant Guide Page 18
Feedback
If your application is not longlisted you will receive an email detailing the reasons for this.
Following the interviews, all candidates will be able to view their total interview score and rank online.
After the conclusion of the offers process all candidates will be emailed with a breakdown of their interview
scores including the scores they achieved in each interview station.
Evaluation of the Selection Process
Following the conclusion of the 2013 recruitment process, the Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery and the
Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee will carry out an evaluation of the
recruitment process. This will include an analysis of anonymised interview scores, pilot interview station
scores, appointment data and feedback from a number of groups involved in the process.
Feedback Forms
Feedback about the recruitment process will be collected from the following groups:
