Trauma and Orthopaedics MSc /

The Trauma and Orthopaedics MSc has beendesigned to reflect the growing trend towardsgreater integration of clinical service, research andeducation in the NHS, as exemplified by thedevelopment of the various Academic HealthScience Centre models, in order to speed up thedevelopment of improvements in patient care.

 Degree summary 

The programme complements clinical training, with a particular focus onthe scientific and research content. Students develop an advancedunderstanding of orthopaedics and trauma and develop an appreciationof scientific research in terms of appraisal of the current scientificliterature/evidence and experimental design, practice and analysis.

// UCL Division of Surgery & Interventional Science is part of one of themost prestigious medical schools in Europe, with a team of nearly400 people, from surgeons and oncologists to clinical trialsspecialists and researchers. Our aim is to understand the causes ofhuman disease and develop innovative therapies and technology toimprove the quality of life of the people around us.

// The Medical School has highly rated basic science expertise withinits academic and clinical departments and students on the Traumaand Orthopaedics MSc programme benefit from a world-classresearch environment.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures,seminars, tutorials and consultant clinical conferences. Each taughtmodule will be assessed by a two hour unseen examination. Thesubmission of the dissertation and viva voce for assessment will takeplace in the final year of the programme. The programme will be taughtmostly at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London.Some teaching will also take place in Bloomsbury.

 Degree structure 

Mode: Flexible: up to 5 years

Location: London, Stanmore

Students are expected to attend teaching at the Royal NationalOrthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore every Wednesday (from 5pm to 7pm)during term times.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programmeconsists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation(60 credits).

 Your career 

The programme aims to enhance the training of orthopaedic trainees,promoting a scientific approach to surgery. Combined with the existingNE London Higher Surgical Training programme, this MSc offersstudents an excellent preparation for FRCS (Orth) and/or furtherresearch in this field.

 Entry requirements 

Applicants must hold a medical qualification from a UK university or anoverseas qualification of equivalent standard.

GMC registration and MRCS or equivalent is also required, and an NTNnumber (or two supporting references from your UK orthopaedictrainers).

English language proficiency level

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, youwill be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level ofEnglish proficiency.

The level of English language proficiency for this programme is:Standard.
