Recycling News for Carpinteria Residents
Winter 2007
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to All
As we celebrate our 75-year anniversary, we are reminded of the values our parents, E.J. and
Myra, instilled in us – the importance of family, health and giving back. We are proud of the service we have provided our customers and communities
through the years, and are most thankful that our mother remains with the company she
co-founded in 1932, and joins us in wishing you a joyous Holiday Season and a Happy
New Year!
Jim, Myron and Ralph Harrison
Recycle Your Christmas Tree
E.J. Harrison & Sons and the City of Carpinteria make it easy for you
to recycle your Christmas tree. All you need to do is remove the
ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel, bows, nails and tree stand. Cut the tree into four-foot sections and place in your yard waste barrel on your scheduled pickup day.
Please remember that fl ocked trees cannot be recycled.
Trees we collect will be processed into various sizes of mulch at California Wood Recy-cling. The material is used by Agromin to make several products that benefi t our farmlands, orchards, nurser-ies and our own gardens.
Extra Trash Allowed After Holidays
Residents may put out twice the amount of trash at no extra charge during the two weeks follow-
ing Christmas. Please make sure the trash is in bags. We also will collect extra recyclables, but please make sure to fl atten all boxes.
Dreaming of a ‘Green’ Christmas
Here are a few ideas on how to have an earth-friendly holiday season:ö Give gift certifi cates, tickets, memberships or make a donation to a
favorite charity. ö Consider consumable gifts. ö Buy items with minimal packaging that
can be recycled.ö During holiday parties make sure it is
easy for your guests to recycle by providing a proper recycle container, easily available and marked, close to the
trash container.ö Use LED holiday lights for safety and
energy savings and make sure that they are on a timer to save electricity.ö Save used wrapping paper, boxes and ribbon this Christmas and reuse it next
year. Make sure everyone opens their gifts carefully; no frantic ripping allowed!ö Creative wrapping paper substitutes
like wallpaper, the Sunday comics, sports pages for the sports fans, hat boxes, scarves and handkerchiefs, or make your own from paper bags decorated with paint or crayons - use your imagination and save precious resources.ö If you use traditional gift wrap and
holiday cards look for some with recycled content and if not available ask the store to order it. You can also make your own cards out of last years cards and wrapping paper.ö Send your cards and messages via e-mail.ö Sending a gift? Reuse the foam peanuts
you have or use unbuttered popcorn.Give Mother Earth a Gift - Recycle.

Medel Appointed Carpinteria’s Public Works Supervisor
Carpinteria native Paul Medel has been appoint-
ed Carpinteria’s new Public Works Supervisor. Among his duties is overseeing the City’s successful recycling program.
Medel replaces Larry Driggers, who retired in July after 31 years with the City. He takes over a pro-gram that is one of the most environmentally-friendly in the state, due to a number of recycling efforts that have sharply reduced the amount of waste ending up in landfi lls. They include curbside recycling as well as the ABOP (antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint) recycling station next to the City Hall parking lot and the annual Household Hazardous Waste disposal day.
Medel comes to the City after spending 16 years with CalTrans, most recently as a fi eld supervisor-lead worker. He resides in Carpinteria with his wife, Corinne, and two daughters, Tiffany and Talia.

Carpinteria’s Annual HHW Disposal Day is April 12
The City of Carpinteria is making it easier and more convenient than
ever for you to do your spring cleaning. The Carpinteria Public Works
Department will hold its annual House-hold and Hazardous Waste Day on Sat-urday, April 12, 2008. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, you are encouraged bring your unwanted clutter and waste to the City Hall parking lot (5775 Carpinteria Ave.) for safe disposal, free of charge.
So bring your worn-out furniture, broken home appliances, outdated computer screens and monitors, old televisions, dead batteries and piled-up yard waste. Also bring cleaning solvents and pesticides that you no longer need as well as leftover paint and chemicals that have been stored in your garage for years.
The City, however, does not accept propane tanks, tires, medical waste or explosives. Smoke detectors are not accepted either.
The Salvation Army will be on hand to reclaim usable goods, while E.J. Harrison & Sons will recycle or dispose of the remaining items. There will be a $10 charge to drop off refrigerators to take care of Freon dis-posal costs.
Small businesses are asked to call in advance and make an appointment at 684-5405, ext. 445.

10th Carpinteria Triathlon Tests Skill and EnduranceClose to 900 superbly conditioned men and women
from across Southern California and throughout the state will gather on Carpinteria State Beach on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 30, for the 10th annual Carpin-teria Triathlon.
E.J. Harrison and Sons, Inc., encourages all to come out and cheer for these dedicated athletes of all ages as their endurance skills in swimming, bicycling and run-ning are put to the test. The event begins at 7:30 a.m.
The Carpinteria Triathlon benefi ts the City of Carpinteria’s Parks and Recreation youth programs. Pro-ceeds will help to provide scholarships and additional equipment for programs such as After School at the Pool, Aqua Camp and Junior Lifeguards.
Contestants can choose between two courses from which to compete: The Olympic Course incorporates a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run; the Sprint Course is comprised of a .5K swim, 15K bike ride and 5K run.
Swimmers usually enjoy small surf with the ab-sence of riptides. The bike course travels along the foothills, offering some spectacular ocean vies. Both the Olympic and Sprint courses offer the competitor a challenging ride, although the Sprint course is also well suited for novice triathletes. The run course runs through Carpinteria neighborhoods and is mostly a fl at
loop course.Entry fees are $65 for the Sprint course, $85 for the
Olympic course and $145 for relay teams (Olympic course only). Entry fees for competitors 16 and under are $35, $45 and $85, respectively. Fees for all race cat-egories are an additional $15 after Sept. 1.
Entries are limited and may sell out. Registration in-formation is available at www.carpinteriatriathlon.com. You also can receive entry forms online at www.Active.com. Volunteers also are needed. For more information, call Ann Meyer at 684-5405, ext. 432, or email her at [email protected].
Don’t Throw Away E-Waste – Bring It to Gold Coast Recycling
Each year in California hundreds of thou-sands of computers, monitors, copiers,
fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items become “obsolete” in the eyes of consumers. Rapid advances in tech-nology and an expanding demand for new features accelerate the generation of “old” electronic equipment (“e-waste”).
But e-waste contains hazardous materials like lead and cadmium; thus, it is illegal to dispose of e-waste in the trash. The result is a growing challenge for residents and businesses as they search for ways to reuse, recycle or properly dispose of this equipment.
So, what do you do? It’s easy, really. If your old elec-tronic devices are still functioning, donate or sell them to someone who can still use them.
If they cannot be repaired, bring your e-waste to the Gold Coast Recycling Center, 5275 Colt Street, Ventura, for free recycling. (A small fee is charged to businesses.)
It’s well worth the 20-minute drive down Highway 101 from Carpinteria. In Ventura, take the Victoria Avenue exit, and turn right onto Valentine Road. Go 1/3 of a mile on Valentine, then turn left on Sperry Ave. Sperry Avenue turns into Colt Street, and Gold Coast Recycling is right there at 5275 Colt.
Not only will you be clearing clutter from your home or offi ce, you will also be doing our environment a big favor.
For more information, call 642-9236.
Bring Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil and Paint to ABOP
Throughout the year, Carpinteria resi-dents and small businesses can bring
their antifreeze, batteries, motor oil, oil fi lters and latex paint to the ABOP facility at the west side of City Hall on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Paint brought to the ABOP facility can be traded in for other used paints that have been dropped off.
Also, you can drop off used oil, oil fi lters and antifreeze at the city’s oil recy-cling facility at the east end of City Hall, Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The maximum amount allowed per visit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds.
For more information on recycling in Carpinteria, call 684-5405, ext. 445.

E.J. Harrison & SonsRecycling, Yard Waste and Trash Guidelines
What goes in the Trash?
What Doesn’t go in the Trash or any other cart?
Hopefully, very little. After you have recycled, composted, fi lled the yard waste cart, donated old clothing and goods, and done all of those good things and more – most of the rest can go in the trash.
How to Place Your Cart for Automated CollectionThe automated arm of the collection truck needs room to grab the cart. Carts should be placed 2-3 feet apart from each other and from objects such as mailboxes and cars with the wheels facing the curb. Carts should be out by 7:00 a.m. on collection days.
