Key questions of today’s lesson?
• What are waves and what is the difference between constructive and destructive waves?
• What do the terms swash and backwash actually mean?
• What does the process of long-shore drift involve?
• What is the difference between transportation and deposition?
Waves
• The power of waves is one of the most significant forces of coastal change. Waves are created by wind blowing over the surface of the sea. As the wind blows over the surface of the sea, friction is created - producing a swell in the water. The energy of the wind causes water particles to rotate inside the swell. This moves the wave forward. When a wave hits shallower water it breaks.
The size and energy of a wave is influenced by:• the length of time and the strength of the wind• The fetch of the wave which is how far it has travelled
Question: What are waves and why do they break (2mins)

Close your eyes imagine you are sitting on a sandy beach alone with your feet in the water.
What can you see?
What is the sea doing?
What are swash and backwash?
SWASH:This is themovement ofthe wavesup thebeach when the wave breaks.
BACKWASH:This is themovement ofthe wave goingback down the beach
Task: Write two or three sentences explaining what swash and backwash are draw a sketch if it helps you explain.

Long-Shore Drift
Task: Draw a quick sketch of the process with appropriate annotations. Explain to me in three or four sentences what it actually is. Use the key words transportation and deposition.

Before we leave lets quickly review can we answer the questions set
out?

• What do the terms swash and backwash actually mean?• What does the process of long-shore drift involve?
TIP: Good revision questions for you to look at. Check ‘the blog’ the lesson will be on there!!
