Head Start programs are not required to providetransportation services, however, there are a few key transportation regulations that grantee and delegate agencies are required to comply with.

Transportation 1310• According to CFR 45 1310, Head Start

programs are required to:• Assist parents to arrange transportation • Provide pedestrian and riding safety

education within 30 days (including EHS and Home base programs).

• Release children only to individuals who have been authorized in writing

• Recruitment materials informing parents that transportation services are not available.

The training requirements for parents andchildren are to be conducted within the first 30days of enrollment to include:• Vehicle evacuation drills/year • Danger zones around vehicle • Pedestrian safety training • Classroom activities • Safe riding, boarding, and crossing.

• Field Trips:

Transportation Services (45 CFR 1310.3) are defined in the regulation as "the planned transporting of children to and from sites where an agency provides services funded under the Head Start Act”.

• Field Trips:

Transportation services can involve the pick-up and discharge of children at regularly scheduled times and pre-arranged sites, including trips between children's homes and program settings." Field trips are pre-planned and pre-arranged, and children are receiving direct component services.

conducted per year in addition to one drill conducted on the vehicle the child will be riding
