Ideally,youshouldconsidergettingassistancefrom a career coach who would help youcompleteacareerassessmenttoidentifyyournatural abilities, strengths, weaknesses andinterests. From that information, a careercoachwouldbeable toguideyouonhow toreachadecisiononwhichcareerpathandfieldtofollow.

BEFORE DECIDING ON A CAREER

STEP 1 Complete a comprehensive career assessment to discover your natural skills and abilities.

STEP 2 Understand what motivates you. Is it money, status, image, interest or being of service?

STEP 3 Conduct research into each job that appeals to you.

STEP 4 Understand the daily duties of the roles you are interested in.

STEP 5 Research the educational requirements of these jobs and how you would need to upskill yourself to achieve employment in that field.

STEP 6 Shadow someone who does the work you are interested in to understand the expectations from an employer.

Onceyouhavedecidedonacareerpath,youneedtounderstandwhattertiaryqualificationsyou would need to assist you in securingemployment inyourchosenfield,youcandothisbyresearchingthejobandidentifyingthedifferentqualificationsthatare indemandforthatspecificrole. SouthAfricahasmanyoptionswhenitcomestostudyingfurther,youcanconsideranyofthefollowing:

Fundingyoureducationcancomeindifferentforms, you would need to take the time toresearchandseewhichoptionswouldbebestsuitedtoyourneeds.youcanalsodiscusstheoptions with any of the institutions that youwanttostudythrough.

BURSARIES:

If you have worked hard in high school andachieved minimum results required forbursaries, you can submit your applications.Bursary providers offer different amountsand may focus on specific professions. Inreturn for this, companies may require youto sign a contract towork for them for a setperiodeitherwhilestudyingorafteryouhavecompletedyourstudies.

TETA awards bursaries every year for qualifying students to study transport related qualifications at South African institutions. Be constantly on the lookout for advertisement on the TETA website.

SCHOLARSHIP

Ascholarshipisgenerallyawardedtostudentswho have excellent academic achievements.Generally,thereisnorequirementforworkingbackorrepayingthecompanyforscholarships.

STUDENT LOANS

There are various financial institutions thatofferloanstostudents.Theseloansaccumulateinterestsandmustbepaidbackinfull.

FINANCIAL AID

Most larger universities offer financial aid tostudentswhohaveexcelled intheiracademicresults. Each university would have its owncriteriaforastudenttoqualifyforfinancialaid.Tounderstandthiscriteria,youwouldneedtocontacttheuniversity’sfinancialaidoffice.

NATIONAL STUDENT FINANCIAL AIDSCHEME

NSFAS supports access to, and success in,higher education and training for studentsfrom poor and working-class families whowouldotherwisenotbeabletoaffordtostudy.TheNSFASidentifieseligiblestudents,providesloansandbursariestoqualifyingstudents.

HOW TO EDUCATE YOURSELF ACCORDING TO YOUR DESIRED CAREER PATH


NSFAS student loans are income-contingent,which means that repayment commenceswhen you startworking. Repayments of yourstudentloanarebasedonthesalarythatyouearn and start once your salary exceeds acertainthresholdperyear.

In2018,theSouthAfricangovernmentbeganarolloutphaseforfreehighereducationforfirstyear students. For more information, pleasecontact the Department of Higher EducationandTraining(DHET).

WORK WHILE STUDYING

Earning while you study is an option for youto take control of thepaymentor repaymentfor your studies, this option generally worksbest for students that are self-motivated andextremelyfocusedontheirgoals.

You would need to learn to manage yourtime efficiently to be able to succeed infinancingyourstudiesonyourown,mostoftensacrificing social interactions to dedicate thetimetoachievingyourgoals.

CREATE A JOB SEARCH PLAN

Afterreadingthroughfromchapters4to12inthisguide,youwillhaveanideaonthecareerpath you want to follow and how to attaineducationforspecificcareers. It is importanttonotethatfindingajobrequiresajobsearchplan.

✇ You will need to choose a career thatis going to take you to the position youenvisage yourself in, as you would notbe starting in that position but rathergrowingintoit.

✇ Start by identifying the skills you wouldneedtobeabletoeffectivelyfulfilltheroleyouwanttomoveinto.Thoseskillscanbebrokenupintothefollowingcategories:

❂ Soft Skills -arepersonalityorientatedskills, these are characteristics youhaveorhavegrown,howyouinteractand relate to people. These skills caninclude communication, listening,patience, problem solving, leadership,etc.

❂ Hard Skills - are more quantifiableandnormallylearntandappliedintheworkplace, these can include typing,machine operation, an additionallanguage,salesskills,etc.

❂ Technical Skills - these are generallyassociated with your ability to usemachinery, equipment, computerprogramsandITrelatedsystems

Onceyouhave identifiedtheskillsyouwouldneedforthejob,

✇ You can start identifying entry levelpositionsthatwouldassistyouingrowingyourskills.

✇ Identifythetypeofjobyouwillbeapplyingfor, what companies could offer thesetypesofrolesandhowlongyouintendonstayinginthatpositionbeforemovingintothenextphaseofemployment.

✇ In addition to identifying potential jobs,you can also now pinpoint additionaleducationalneedstohelpyoureachyourgoals.


HOW TO CREATE A CV RELEVANT TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET?

ItiseasytojumpontotheInternetandsearchforamodernisedCVthatcanhelpyoumarketyourself to potential employers. However,templates provided don’t always containinformation specific to the South African jobmarket. It is vital that you conduct sufficientresearchtounderstandwhatisrequiredwhensubmittingyourapplicationforaposition.

Your CV is a reflection of you, it is the veryfirst impression that you will be providing apotentialemployer,ensurethat:
