Transpiration
Water is lost from a plant in the process of transpiration.
This is the evaporation of water from plants.
Transpiration
Water is lost from three main areas of a plant:• Stomata – in the leaves, account for about 90%
of water loss• Cuticle – the waxy layer, some water is lost
through diffusion• Lenticles – woody stems have loosely packed
cork cells through which gas exchange occurs – a little water is lost here
Transpiration
• Water moves through the plant from roots to leaves and is lost to the air as water vapour.
• This is known as the transpiration stream.
• About 98% of water entering a plant is lost to the air through transpiration
• Remaining 2% is used for photosynthesis
