Transport and Logisitcs
Objectives
1.
• To understand the importance of transport solutions at a local and national level
2.
• To consider the problems associated with developing new transport projects.
3.• To identify specific problems and
solutions for México.
What do we mean by transport?Freight Passenger
Why is transport important?1.
• Enables internal and external shipment of trade
2.• Allows connection between populations and
mobility of population.
3.• Facilitates the provision of services• Provides greater political homogeneity
4.• Helps stimulate economic development• Helps reduce economic disparities.
Two distinct issuesUrban transport Long distance
Urban:What are the problems?
Congestion
Pollution Safety
Solutions
Buses and
trams
Trolley buses
Metros and light
railways
More solutions
Road buildin
g: bypass
es
bridges flyovers
SchemesMany cities are now investigating forms of congestion charges or restrictions
Long distance: what are the problems?
Expensive
Indirect routes

Transport is vital and contentiousIn UK, environmentalists hugely disrupt road schemes• Argue more roads lead to more traffic
Funding for large schemes can be pulled for political reasons• Panama Canal extension
Taxes• Governments use unpopular measures to pay
for construction projects and regulate traffic
China1.
• Since the 1980s have developed the most extensive highway system in the world
2.• Have built 10 of the 20 tallest bridges in the world in the past 15
years
3.• Have establised railinks with western Europe and their vast
internal network.• China possesses the first network of HST (High Speed Train) in
the world.
Scenarios1. Mexico City metropolitan area has a
population of over 20 million people. Most travel daily to school or work. This leads to huge problems: the roads are congested and public transport overstretched.
2. Mexico is a major manufacturing nation and the eleventh largest economy in the world. It trades with East and West, Nort and South. It is perfectly positioned in the middle of world. How can east, west transport across the country be improved to maximise this advantage.
Sc. 1: Possible schemes to consider
1.• Government policies to reduce urban
congestion.
2.• Investment in new transport
construction projects to reduce congestion
3. • Development of new transport
systems to provide more options to travellers in the city
Sc. 2 Possible schemes to consider
1.•New road schemes
2.•A freight rail network
3. •A canal
TaskYou are a political party developing your proposals
for transport and the economy. You can focus on Mexico City (scenario 1) or the
whole country (scenario 2)You must put forward a manifesto as a leaflet on
transport in which:1. you propose a scheme and provide a map or
diagram2. price a scheme3. explain its benefits (economic, environmental)4. mitigate costs or problems.
