Broadband over power lines (BPL)
Can plug the computer into any electrical outlet in the
home, instantly have access to high-speed Internet Tested in several cities around the United States and the
United Kingdom

electricity and the RF used to transmit data vibrate at certain
frequencies
If electricity spikes at a frequency that is the same as the RF
then it will cancel out that signal and the data transmission
will be damaged en route
BPL bypasses this problem by using medium-voltage lines --
the data can only travel so far before it degrades

How BPL works?
special devices installed called repeaters take in thedata and repeat it in a new transmission, amplifying itfor the next journey
CT coupler allows the data on the line to bypasstransformers
Transformer's job is to reduce the 7,200 volts down to
the 240-volt standard some carry the signal in with the electricity on thepower line, while others put wireless links on the polesand send the data wirelessly into homes

WHY LIMITED EXPLOITATION?
PLT technology is young and still evolving; its capabilitiesstill need expansion
There is a lack of standardization and interoperability of PLT-relevant products
commercial incentives to exploit such a telecom
infrastructure as PLT not yet been clear
Increased PLT transfer speed and reliability is needed

PROBLEMS FOR PLT USERS
y could cause malfunctions of your electrical equipment,such as battery chargers, audio-video systems
y causes interference to important radio services, the user
might be held responsible for the damagey Since all users share the same physical access, data
sniffing can be done and security is a problem
y achievable bandwidth and download rate issignificantly lower than customers expect
y To receive telecommunication services and energy fromthe same company will create a dangerous newmonopoly
