Protection and Beauty for Wood Outdoors

Along with the warmth and pleasant atmosphere that is radi-

ated in homes and gardens by the working material wood,

wood also offers many possibilities for individual decoration.

Wood is one of the most popular building materials but wood

used in outdoor areas requires effective protection if the beauty

of the wood is to be maintained over the long-term. In these

cases, a wood preservative is needed that penetrates deeply

into the wood yet allows the wood to breathe.

Remmers translucent coatings with a wood preservative reli-

ably protect wood for years through their high quality raw ma-

terials and pigments. Their long-term effect against fungi and

blue stain according to RAL Quality and Testing Provisions is

documented by a certificate and continuously controlled by

the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labelling.

Along with decorative treatment, the following species ofwood need to be protected from blue stain and soft rot.HK Stain and Wood Cream are 2 in 1 products that takecare of both tasks:

American red oak Larch Beech Light Red Meranti Douglas fir Oregon Pine Eucalyptus Southern Pine Spruce Fir Pine Western Hemlock

Building elements that are exposed to weather require pro-tection with an approved wood preservative.

The following species of wood are very resistant and donot need additional protection against blue stain & soft rot. They can be treated with all of the translucent coatingspresented in this brochure:

Afzelia Oak American white oak Idigbo Bangkirai Niangon Basralocus Australian blackwood Opepe Utile Ekki Teak Dark Red Meranti Western Red Cedar Doussié

Protective treatment with an approved wood preserva-tive is not necessary.

UV-Rays

The sun takes its toll on wood surfaces, not just throughits heat but also through its ultra-violet rays which pene-trate into the wood. Combined with precipitation, the suncan change the colour of unprotected wood in just a fewweeks to months, i.e. the wood turns a silver grey colour.Fine wood fibres on the surface of the wood then standupright and lose strength. Most of the undesired changesin the colour and surface can be prevented by the appli-cation of pigmented coatings. UV Weather ProtectionStain and Long Time Stain in the shade clear UV+ nowmake it possible for the first time to coat wood in outdoorareas with a clear coating and prevent the wood fromturning grey for a much longer period thanks to highly ef-fective UV blockers.

Blue Stain

Blue stain is one of the so-called discolouring fungi be-cause it forms visible, black-blue stains. Blue stain doesnot decay the wood itself but is unsightly and it also pavesthe way for other fungi that do decay wood (soft rot) be-cause they perforate the cell walls, making it easier for thewood to absorb water (capillarity).

The naturalEnemies ofWood

Moisture

Wood outdoors is continuously subjected to the influenceof moisture: Rain, dew, condensation, etc. cause themoisture content in wood to rise; evaporation reducesmoisture. This alternating process causes cracks to formon the surface. Through these cracks or through diffu-sion, the water that has penetrated must leave the woodagain; otherwise wetness remains beneath the surface, creating a nutrient medium for blue stain and other fungithat decay wood. That is why it is important to select theright coating for the wood element: Windows and doorsare so-called dimensionally stable building elements –which is important when selecting a coating. In thesecases, thick-layer translucent coatings or finishing paintsmust be used: These coatings prevent the ingress ofmoisture so that the element does not change its dimen-sions through swelling and shrinking which would makeit impossible to close or open them properly. With build-ing elements that are not dimensionally stable, e.g.boarding and fences, the ingress of moisture, e.g.through end grain wood or through cracks, can never beentirely prevented. In these cases, thin-layer translucentcoatings are used so that the wood can breathe and themoisture can leave the wood again.

Algae

Especially in areas where there are forests or a lot of trees, these lower organisms easily grow on wood in outdoorareas, covering the wood with an unsightly green growth.HK Stain contains an algacide which prevents prematuregreen growth. HK Stain and Wood Cream are both formu-lated with an algacide for protection.

Soft rot

Soft rot is the most dangerous form of fungi that decaywood because it destroys the structure of the wood, causing a loss of stability and the wood begins to rot.

Tips & Important Information:

The additional use of a wood preservative primer is, of course, not ne -cessary when you use HK Stain. HK Stain is a “2 in 1 product and is al-ready formulated with the most comprehensive protection possible. Toachieve great silk gloss surfaces, we recommend an additional coat ofLong Time Stain UV. With an additional topcoat of Long Time Stain UV“clear UV+”, light shades of colour will remain permanently light.

Range of Use

For treatment of wood without static loads in outdoorareas without ground contact

Notes on working:

The substrate must be clean and dry and can be recoated withoutsanding or stripping.

Set up a trial area first to check the colour on the respective wood sub-strate. This ensures the success of the coating!

Use wood preservatives safely and responsibly. Always read the labeland product information before using.

Tips & Important Information:

Wood Cream already contains an impregnation agent against blue stain& soft rot. This product is a true cream and not a translucent coating in gelform. It penetrates deeply and can be applied to rough-sawn wood in justone working operation. Two coats may be required for planed wood andhardwood. Wood Cream should be applied with a normal brush suitablefor translucent coatings.

Special ease of application

Because of its cream form, Wood Cream can be appliedin much thicker layers than conventional, thin-liquid,translucent coatings that contain a preservative. While upto three coats must be applied when using many othertranslucent coatings, complete wood and weather pro-tection can usually be achieved with just one coat ofWood Cream!

Notes on working:

Because of the consistency of the product, it is ideal for working over-head. No more time consuming covering and masking.

Use wood preservatives safely and responsibly! Always read the labeland product information before using.

Tips & Important Informaiton:

When used in a system with Wood Cream (clear), it can also be used inareas directly exposed to weather. For permanently light-colouredwood, UV Weather Protection Stain (clear UV+) can also be used as awearing layer which is renewed when renovating. The desired shade ofcolour then darkens much more slowly.
