AIM and OBJECTIVES:
- To understand various types and elements of TRANSITION space.- Study response and reaction to various TRANSITION spaces.- Study elements which would encourage interaction in TRANSITION space.
SCOPES and LIMITATIONS:
- To carryout detailed analysis and study of TRANSITION space in institution(PIADS).- Pscychological effect due to scale and proportion, relation with built form.

TYPLOGY OF TRANSITION SPACES
Covers apprx. 10 to 40% of total volume of a building.
![Page 7: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
CORRIDORS
PURPOSE -•To provide visual linkages.•To enable channelize movement of the crowd.•For interaction and temporary hault before entering into any activity. REQUIREMENTS-•Should be spacious and of adequate width.•Should be well organized.•Should be properly lit and ventilated.• Should be wide enough to allow free circulation.•Should have directional clarity. ELEMENTS DEFINING-•Railing and parapet.•Openings.•Skylights.
![Page 8: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
This type of corridor gives
feeling of openness. This
type of corridors acts as transition space from
open space to semi open
space.
This type of corridor gives
feeling of closeness.
This type of corridor does not promote interaction..
![Page 9: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Puntures on 2nd floor corridor, connects both the
corridors visually.
The pause points in the corridors acts as a good
interaction space.
![Page 10: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
-Repetition of similar elements creates monotonous effect.
-The corridors can be made interesting by providing low height sitting.
-Corridors are interacting space before any activity.
-Corridors provides interacting linkages around the structure.
-The peripheral corridors reduce the glare and solar radiation, resulting in cooling in the interior spaces.
SPATIAL PERCEPTION
![Page 11: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
STAIRS PURPOSE-•To connect two different levels •Segregation of activities.•Elevating a building to create impact and grandeur.•Can also be used as informal sitting space. REQUIREMENTS-•Should be comfortable.•Should be well defined and highlighted.•Should be easily accessible.
ELEMENTS DEFINING-•Paving material.•Colors & textures.•Built forms .•Rest area .
![Page 12: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
-Segregation of movement.
-Changes in levels makes it interesting.
-Long steps with direct proportion to scale of builtform provides foreground to perceive the structure.
-Long steps with enough depth is used for relaxing and interaction.
SPATIAL PERCEPTION

COURTYARDS
PURPOSE-•To provide visual transition •To provide light ventilation to the structure•Sometimes essential for hot and dry climate.•Can act as recreational space. REQUIREMENTS-•Should have landscaped features.•Should have good visual linkages.
ELEMENTS DEFINING-•Landscape components.•Levels.•Skylights.
![Page 14: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Courtyard is easily accessible from all sides
Both the Courtyard’s are visually connected.

-Courtyard is located within the builtspaces.
-Courtyard can be Openspace, Landscape area, Waterbody and also it can be a gatheriing space.
-It has been observed that student use courtyard very oftenly because it is central area and easily accessible.
-In case of courtyard height to width ratio plays a important role.
-If Height is greater than Width it gives the feeling of closeness .
- If Height is less than Width it gives the feeling of openness.

ENTRANCE
PURPOSE-•To create a welcoming approach .•Formal pre-entry•Prepare the user for upcoming activity connecting exterior and interior. REQUIREMENTS-•Should be well defined .•Should be semi-covered to create gradual transition from exterior to interior.•Should be impressive, welcoming and attractive.

TYPES OF ENTRANCE
Flushed entrance
Projected entrance
Recessed entrance
Our campus has projected entrance

•The entrance is a semiopen space.
•The porch helps in preparing minds of user for a change of informal open space to formal enclosed space.
•The entrance directly opens into courtyard which gives the feeling of openness.
SPATIAL PERCEPTION
![Page 19: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
SOME MORE EXAMPLES
Stage as a transition
space.
Semiopen space.
![Page 20: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Transition space play a important role in any built enviornment. They are seen everywhere and are essential in changing the state of mind of the user’s and prepare him for the upcoming activity let the mind leave past activity behind.
In Transition space scale and proportion play an important role.
Orientation of a Transition space should always be considered because climate plays a major role in Transition space.
Transition spaces is considered very important by building designers for reasons of aesthetics, health and comfort, and as emergency exit routes in the event of fire.
CONCLUSION
![Page 21: TRANSITION SPACES](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022020711/549e2a28b37959cd618b461f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Hierarchy of transition space should always be maintained.
The one of the most important functions of transition spaces is sustainability in building design.
The importance of optimum energy consumption in transitional spaces is also important in non-domestic buildings, as these spaces do not generate income.
