What Are Surges?

A surge is a random, high energy, short duration voltage event. Alsoreferred to as transients, impulses or spikes, these random electricaldisturbances can damage or destroy sensitive microprocessor- basedequipment.

The Cost Of Downtime –The $26 Billion Per YearProblem

Your power distribution systemand attached load equipment isunder constant attack from varioustypes of power line disturbances.Transient voltage surges comprisethe most severe, common andimmediate danger to sensitiveelectrical and electronic equip-ment. Sources of Surges

Although external transient surgesinclude lightning strikes, utilitygrid switching and equipmentaction at adjacent buildings areeasily recognized high-energysurge events, they only accountfor 20% of all surges faced by afacility. 80% of surges are theresults of internal switchingtransients (turning on/off motors,transformers, photocopiers, etc.).Wiring, grounding errors andsurges (also known as transientvoltages) are among the mostcommon power quality issuesfacing facilities today – resultingin safety concerns, equipmentdamage and costly downtime.

With System Shield, protectionbegins at the incoming powerpanels and extends to systemdistribution centers, panelbreakers, points of use, andeven individual equipment. Thiscoordinated approach is supportedby the Emerald Book (IEEE Std.1100-1999), a definitive referencepublished by the Institute ofElectrical and ElectronicsEngineers (IEEE). This standardstates "It is recommended thatadditional [SPDs] be applied todownstream electrical switch-boards and panelboards if they support electronic loadequipment."

ANSI/IEEE C62.41-1991 separatesa typical facility into three locationcategories, each characterizedby differing exposure levels,transient wave shapes, voltage/current levels and transientsources. Service Entrance Locations(Category C)These locations are subject tohigh-power externally generatedtransients caused by lightning,power company grid switching,power system faults, severeweather and neighboring facilities.Surge suppressors installed athigh exposure service entrancelocations provide the first line ofdefense. Here, transient ampli-tudes are suppressed to levelsthat subsequent layers of theSystem Shield can eliminate.

Distribution Panel Locations(Category B) These locations are subject to amixture of externally generatedimpulse transients and internallygenerated switching/ringingtransients caused by equipmentsuch as motors, HVAC equipment,manufacturing and office equip-ment. Surge devices installed atthese high to medium exposurelocations provide the secondlayer of defense against theexternally-generated transientactivity as well as suppressionof much more prevalent (80%)internally-generated transients.

Branch Panel LocationsThese locations experience alarge amount of switching/ringwave transients generated by awade variety of load equipment,including office equipment,lighting controls, commercialand industrial systems. Individual Circuit ProtectionProcess control, sensing/monitor-ing and DC power supplies mayall require individual equipmentprotection. Individual Circuit/CriticalLoad Protection

Sensitive microprocessor-basedloads often share circuits withtransient-generating equipment,such as switching power supplies,HVAC systems, process controls,lighting panels, and non-lineardemand loads. It is quite commonto have sensitive low-voltagecontrols, such as PLCs, processcontrols, or variable frequencydrive controls connected to thesame circuit as the equipment theyare controlling. Normal equipmentoperation, especially with today’snon-linear load equipment, cancause thousands of internallygenerated transients every hour.The nuisance effects of thesetransients on control equipmentmanifest themselves as unpre-dictable control lockup, errors inproduction processes, constantre-booting of PLC controls.
