Transformational Leadership ADVOCACY & INFLUENCE

TL6 – The CNO advocates for organizational support of ongoing leadership development for all nurses, with a focus on mentoring and succession planning.

Example A: Provide one example, with supporting evidence, of mentoring or succession planning for clinical nurses.

Succession Planning for Clinical Nurses

At Advocate BroMenn Medical Center (ABMC), succession planning is of key importance to Laurie Round, MS, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive (CNE). In order to ensure that transformational leadership is sustained throughout the organization, focused and intentional growth and development opportunities are cultivated at all levels. Because of the value on succession planning, vital strategies of recruitment, retention, identification of talent within the organization, leadership development, coaching, and mentoring are woven into the culture of ABMC. As clinical nurses continue to grow professionally and assume leadership and advanced practice roles, ABMC needs to be able to replace them. Unlike many counterparts in more urban areas, ABMC does not have a wealth of unemployed nurses in search of new opportunities in the central Illinois area. Therefore, succession planning for clinical nurses at ABMC starts with ensuring the recruitment of talented new nurses. There are several nursing schools in the local community, but many nursing students will return to their hometown areas after completing their training. In order to prepare future generations of nurses and nurse leaders at ABMC, it is imperative to develop students from local nursing schools and attract them to the culture of excellence at ABMC so they will remain in central Illinois as nurses at ABMC. A multi-pronged approach is used, which includes the establishment of collaborative relationships with local colleges and universities, the provision of excellent on-site clinical experiences, use of a summer internship program, and the offering of nursing student informational sessions.

ABMC is fortunate to have academic partnerships with three schools of nursing in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, including Mennonite College of Nursing (MCN) at Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and Heartland Community College. Relationships with these academic settings are built in a number of ways, including the provision of a “beginning of the school year brunch”, hosted by Laurie, for the Deans of Nursing, nursing faculty, and nursing leadership at ABMC (Exhibit TL6.A.1 Email Communication from MCN). Laurie also connects with clinical faculty throughout the school year to collaborate and listen to their perspectives.

Traditional on-site clinical experiences for nursing students are augmented by various experiences offered for students to learn about and observe the work of nurses in the Quality Resource Management program. Similarly, Laurie meets personally with nursing students during their senior leadership rotation and allows them to job shadow

with her. These opportunities introduce students to a range of career opportunities, both clinical and non-clinical, that are available at ABMC. These opportunities also benefit the students and the organization through the exchange of ideas and perspectives that occur.

ABMC also offers a paid summer internship program for qualified candidates who have completed their junior year of nursing education. The goal of this program is to provide exceptional students an opportunity to gain additional clinical experience throughout the summer months. Each intern is paired with a clinical nurse coach who supports their growth in gaining critical thinking skills and navigating the complex care of patients in their area of interest. The feedback from interns has been extremely positive. At the end of the internship, a celebration is held with the interns, their coaches and nurse leaders throughout the medical center. Many of the interns continue employment within nursing at ABMC during their last academic year, further increasing their potential for employment as clinical nurses at ABMC upon graduation (Exhibit TL6.A.2 Intern Presentation, August 2015).

In addition, ABMC hosts a variety of informational sessions for nursing students to find out more about nursing at ABMC, to learn about interviewing skills, and to give them an opportunity to ask questions. Clinical nurses at ABMC who completed their nursing education at one of the local universities or colleges participate in these sessions to give their perspective, tour students in areas of interest, and build relationships, both as alumni and as future colleagues (Exhibit TL6.A.3 Collaborative Communication).

Succession planning must include positive, collaborative experiences for nursing students at every opportunity, whether it be well-rounded clinical rotations, internships, or informational sessions. As the nursing workforce ages, new graduate nurses become the medical center’s future nursing workforce pipeline.

CNO Advocacy

Laurie is a strong advocate for nursing students, the future nursing workforce at ABMC. As a transformational leader, Laurie exhibits intellectual stimulation and idealized influence by fostering relationships and providing multiple opportunities for visioning and collaborative discussions between the leaders, faculty, and students within local nursing programs and ABMC (Exhibit TL6.A.4 IWU’s Redesign of School of Nursing). She displays intellectual stimulation in her support of ABMC’s internship and recruitment opportunities, which provide nursing students with an extraordinary experience and valuable insight into the profession of nursing and the culture of ABMC (Exhibit TL6.A.5 Speaking with MCN Students). Laurie exhibits individualized consideration and inspirational motivation through personal interaction with the students to help them understand nursing’s role within the changing healthcare system. She shares her optimism for the future of nursing and challenges them to reach their full potential and achieve the best health outcomes.

Dear Todd, I was great to speak with you this am at the faculty breakfast at Advocate. It was a great networking

event and I greatly appreciated it. I will be teaching two clinical med/surg Adult 2 sections this fall on Monday and Wed. In the past a

student in Adult 2 would be scheduled for one observation day starting in SDS and following thru to OR and possibly PACU. I would like to once again have the students this fall have this observation experience

if possible. I have attached a draft of the student schedule for Monday and Wed. clinical groups

designating the OR observation day by using SDS on the schedules. I would only send one student per day. The student will be responsible to write a paper of this observation using the attached guidelines.

Thanks so much for your willingness to work with these students . I know they gain much from this observation experience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Internship: The key to success!

I love how willing to teach all of the nurses and doctors are. I have

learned a ton throughout this summer.

This program has given me a chance to see what nursing is really like.

I think the 12 hour shifts, caring for multiple patients at a time, having

patients for the duration of their stay, and interacting with staff are

experiences we don’t get as students. I now feel much more prepared.

So glad I got the opportunity to do this!

Where do you find excellent nurses and

the best patient care?

Congratulations, and best wishes!

Right here at Advocate Health Care!

Laurie, What a great idea for ABMC to have an event for our students graduating in August! Thank you!! Catherine is correct, we have 18 accelerated students and 11 traditional students who got “caught” in our Plan of Study change and will be completing this summer instead of needing to wait until NUR 327 Leadership clinical is taught in Spring, 2016. I know these 29 students will be thrilled to hear you are willing to talk with them and provide guidance and mentoring; these students felt somewhat “left out” when they were not included in the Chicago event.

Exhibit TL6.A.3 Advocate BroMenn Medical Center 2

I’m including on this email our undergraduate advisor, Nancy Diller, as she will be part of the process of communicating with the students. Chris Boicken, is my assistant, and will be a good contact for ABMC with the planning; Chris worked with John at Advocate Corporate with the March event.

Let us know what you are thinking; it is not too early to get a date set and the announcement out to students. Students have test week May 4-8 and will be off campus the follow week. The summer session begins May 18th and runs through August 7th. The earlier in the summer we can get this scheduled the better as students will be anxious to secure their plans. Please check your calendars and see what you think is best for your schedules. I’d suggest NOT having something Tuesday evening as students have a hybrid class on Tuesdays and therefore not always coming to B-N for classes; there are a couple of commuters who are interested in moving or working in B-N despite their current address. Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays would work the best; students would be available anytime after 5pm.

Let us know how to proceed! Again, this is very kind and will be well-received!! Best, Dianne

Dianne, I met with Laurie yesterday and we discussed two exciting ideas for the upcoming year. Laurie would like develop some sort of an opportunity to meet with the accelerated students who will be graduating in August (and this year we have about 11 other students who will be taking their last semester with the accelerated students). I asked Laurie to discuss with you and please involve me as

Exhibit TL6.A.3 Advocate BroMenn Medical Center 3

needed but the discussion was about having a time to talk about Advocate BroMenn opportunities, this might be on a much smaller scale something like the event up north – but in Bloomington-Normal.

Secondly, she is interested in developing an session similar to what we do at MMC in Springfield each year that includes updates, expectations, learning about the other College’s updates, meeting directors, just listening to what is going on. We were thinking something for August when faculty return and to include FT and PT faculty in Advocate BroMenn facilities.

If you need my assistance please let me know, thanks.

Laurie and Tony, It was exactly what we had hoped for! The students were very pleased with the hospitality and valuable information provided last evening. Thank you! Your conversational style of presenting and your genuine interest in the students was well received. The gifts and dinner were much appreciated! We appreciate the kind words said about the quality of MCN students; we value our relationship with ADBRM and look forward to more journeys together!

We hope we can begin planning an event for the students graduating in May, 2016. Plans are underway to go to Chicago to Advocate corporate in November, 2015. Like last year, this really only focuses on the Chicagoland area. To focus on Advocate BroMenn, an event in mid-February, 2016, would be ideal before the students get too busy into their last semester.

We’d like to move the primary contact with these arrangements to my Administrative Assistant, Christine Boicken ([email protected]) as she coordinates the Chicago event and all other student events. For MCN, it is not too early to get a date on the calendar so we can let students know when they come back in August. Please let us know at your convenience who would be the person to coordinate the date, arrangements and communications with from ADBRM.

We have attached archival documents that outline our shared history and highlight a turning point in the nursing

profession. The Brokaw Hospital School of Nursing began in 1902. In 1923, a combined 5 year collegiate and

professional program began resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and a Graduate

Nurse Diploma from Brokaw Hospital; ultimately the program was transferred from Brokaw Hospital to Illinois Wesleyan

as the Brokaw Collegiate School of Nursing at Illinois Wesleyan University and a four-year BSN program was sanctioned

in 1959.
