29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2016

From the Desk of Deacon Chris…. HOW DO YOU RECEIVE JESUS IN HOLY

COMMUNION?

We recently had a very successful supper/workshop with

Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. We went over the practical elements of the ministries, and had

time for table sharing and questions and answers. Deacon Charlie did an excellent presentation on the ministry of Lec-

tor, and I spoke about the ministry of the Extraordinary Min-ister of the Eucharist. One of the suggestions we received

was to share some of the practical elements of receiving Holy Communion with the rest of the parish community, so I have

decided to do so with this article. Preparation – One can best prepare for Holy Commun-

ion by participating fully in the Mass. That means praying the prayers of the Mass, singing the songs,

listening to the Word of God through the sacred scriptures, listening to the homily, and joining with

the priest as he prays the Eucharistic Prayer and the consecration of bread and wine into the body and

blood of Jesus. Receiving Holy Communion – Everyone should make a

reverent bow as they present themselves to receive Holy Communion. When the minister says, “The

Body of Christ” the response is, “Amen” as the minister places the consecrated host on your tongue

or in your hand. The Body of Christ is to be con-sumed immediately, and cannot be taken to one’s

seat or put into a pocket.

Receiving from the Chalice – Everyone should make a reverent bow prior to receiving the chalice contain-

ing the precious blood of Jesus. When the minister says, “The blood of Christ”, the reply is, “Amen”

and a sip, not a gulp, of the precious blood is taken. It should be noted that Jesus is fully contained in

both the consecrated host and the precious blood. One does not have to receive both species to fully

participate in Holy Communion. One or the other is full participation.

Intinction – Intinction is taking the consecrated host and dipping it into the precious blood to consume them

together. Intinction is not allowed as an option for Communion. Each species is consumed separately.

You might have noticed that Father Ingemie has practice intinction on the altar. He only does so

when he has a cold to prevent spreading germs.

Those are some of the practical steps for receiving Holy Communion, but the question remains, “How do

you receive Jesus in Holy Communion?” Do you approach Jesus in a spirit of humility and gratitude

for the gift of Jesus himself, the gift of eternal life? Do you present yourself with a sense of awe, and

the joy of receiving the living body and blood of Jesus? Or do you just go through the motions as

you receive without ever considering that you are receiving the most precious gift we can receive?

Do not get trapped into treating Holy Communion

as routine. It is certainly not routine. Please re-member that. God bless.

Deacon Chris

TRANSFIGURATION PARISH NURSE PROGRAM Pat Hebert, RN, MA, Faith Community Nurse

(518) 753-4554, ext. 13 [email protected] Our mission is to model the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

Our Goal is to promote health & wellness within the values, beliefs, practices of our faith community.

Nurses’ Note: Flu Vaccines will be given this weekend in Schaghticoke be-

fore and after each Mass, 4:00PM Mass and 8”30AM. Health Tips:. A spice that’s extra nice: Cinnamon takes center stage with deliciously powerful benefits. Go on, start sprinkling. Along with cooler temps and leaf peeping comes the sweet aroma of cinnamon. Whether sprinkled on baked apples or spicing up cider, cinnamon is especially enjoyable in the fall. What you may not know, however, is that in addition to its delicious taste and tantalizing scent, cinnamon offers some serious health benefits. It helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol. And now it’s thought to be a weapon for fighting viruses: Take that, colds, flu and herpes! To get the one tablespoon daily that’s recommended, you’ll need to be more creative with how you use it. Continue sprinkling cinnamon on whole-grain toast and adding it to your oatmeal or yo-gurt, but also try adding it to coffee, using it as a rub for chicken, or featuring it in your fish dishes. http://www.clevelandclinicwellness.com

RCIA

(Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) Have you or anyone you know ever thought about becom-

ing Catholic? Or are you a Catholic who has not received

all of the sacraments? Many people assume that RCIA is

only for people who have never been Catholic and are look-

ing to “convert.” The fact is that RCIA can be for anyone,

Catholics, who have not received all of their sacraments or

non-Catholics who are interested in learning more about the

Catholic faith. This process is an individual spiritual journey

for anyone seeking an active relationship with the Catholic

Church. The Community of Transfiguration Parish warmly

welcomes all and will be companions on the journey for all

who come. Groups will be gathering soon. If you are inter-

ested in learning more about the RCIA process, contact Pat

Hebert at (518) 235-0337, ext 5 or 753-4554, ext 13.

Pastors, Parishes, and Political Responsibility

Guidelines for permissible political activities by

Catholic organizations In the United States of America, all adult citizens are blessed to

have the opportunity to vote for our political leaders. This is not

a responsibility to be taken lightly, and the Bishops of New York

State have once again renewed their call to Catholic citizens to

inform their consciences on the critical issues of the day, to learn

the positions of candidates for office, and to exercise their right

to vote. These issues include, but are not limited to, respect for

the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until

natural death, issues of war and peace, religious liberty, the edu-

cation and formation of children, the needs of the poor, oppressed

and vulnerable, and access to health care for all people, particu-larly the elderly and infirm. Note: This excerpt is taken from a statement dated March 23, 2016

from the New York State Catholic Conference. For more informa-

tion, or to read the complete article go to www.nyscatholic.org.
