The Undergraduate Transfer Office offers a unique and highly personalized service to Stony Brook University’s transfer population.Dedicated to serving the needs of transfer students, we provide a supportive environment from the point of inquirythrough the transfer student’s first year of enrollment at theUniversity. On campus, we work closely with the AdmissionsOffice, Orientation Office, the Registrar, the Academic and Pre-Professional Advising Center, Financial Aid and ScholarshipServices, and academic departments. Off campus, the officemaintains strong connections with the community colleges andtheir students, ensuring a seamless transfer with on-going advising and valuable course equivalency tables.

The Undergraduate Transfer Office provides academic advice toprospective and enrolled transfer students. Transfer advisors areavailable to help students plan their academic programs andcourse selections to ensure a smooth transition to Stony Brook.Advisors evaluate transfer credits for applicability to StonyBrook’s Diversified Education Curriculum (D.E.C.) general educationrequirements. Undergraduate Minors

Stony Brook students have the opportunity to enrich their education and gain a global perspective by pursuing their academicinterests in an overseas location while still earning credits toward their bachelor’s degree. Programs are available during both thesummer and academic year. Stony Brook sponsors study abroad and exchange programs in 30 countries throughout the world.

Study Abroad Opportunities

New York has reciprocal interstate agreements for teacher certification with 39 states and the jurisdictions of Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

The Professional Education Program at Stony Brook University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education(NCATE), www.ncate.org. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs.

1. Graduates of Suffolk County Community College, NassauCommunity College, Farmingdale State and other SUNY and CUNYcolleges who earn an Associate of Arts or Associate of Sciencedegree prior to matriculation at Stony Brook receive transfer creditfor all courses completed as part of their associate degree requirements. The policy of acceptance of all credits completed aspart of associate degree requirements does not guarantee auto-matic satisfaction of requirements.

2. For those without an AA or AS degree from a SUNY or CUNYschool, all credits passed with a letter grade of C or higher andearned at regionally accredited institutions or recognized by theProgram on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction of the Universityof the State of New York and recorded on an official transcript areaccepted for transfer credit and are evaluated for applicability tospecific Stony Brook requirements. Successfully completed cours-es from these institutions for which a letter grade was notassigned are also accepted for transfer credit, but will not satisfySkill 3 or D.E.C. categories A and C.

3. This Transfer Guide’s equivalency tables include courses fromSuffolk County Community College, Nassau Community College,and Farmingdale State that may be used to satisfy Stony Brook’sgeneral education requirements or have specific transfer equivalencies.

4. Credit-bearing courses completed with a grade of C or higherfrom Suffolk County Community College, Nassau CommunityCollege, and Farmingdale State that do not appear in this TransferGuide are accepted for elective credit at Stony Brook.

5. Transfer courses satisfactorily completed for the intended majorthat do not have specific Stony Brook equivalencies will need to beevaluated by the appropriate department for applicability towardmajor requirements.

6. Almost all credits earned at community colleges are consideredlower-division credits.

7. Transfer courses evaluated as upper division (300-level) atStony Brook must be passed with a letter grade of C or higher toapply toward the upper-division credit requirement.

8. Stony Brook’s entry skills requirements must be met either byan appropriate course or standardized examination (not a college-specific examination taken at a college or university other thanStony Brook).

9. All students may satisfy D.E.C. categories A through K bytransferring course work that meets the criteria of the category.Survey and introductory courses will not satisfy categories H, I, J,and K.

10. A course evaluated as equivalent to a Stony Brook course willsatisfy the D.E.C. category of the Stony Brook course.

11. Students who, while in high school, complete relevant coursesat a regionally accredited college will have the credits evaluatedfor D.E.C. requirements, according to the guidelines in the“Application of Transfer Credits to General EducationRequirements” section of the Undergraduate Bulletin.

12. AP, CLEP subject examinations, Stony Brook Challenge credit,or other approved credit by examination with appropriate scoresmay be used to satisfy one course in each of the categories E, F, Gand A, Part 1. An appropriate score on the AP mathematicsexamination satisfies category C.

Note: Once matriculated at Stony Brook, students may not satisfyD.E.C. category A by transfer. College writing courses taken whilein high school will satisfy only Skill 2 and DEC A Part 1.

All students must also satisfy the followingrequirements:

Upper-Division Credit RequirementAt least 39 credits must be earned in upper-division courses(numbered 300 or higher at Stony Brook).

Residence RequirementAt least 36 credits must be earned at Stony Brook after attainingjunior status.

Grade Point Average RequirementA cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 is required tograduate from all degree programs at Stony Brook.

Major RequirementsEach candidate for a degree must satisfy the requirements of adeclared major, including the upper-division writing requirement.Transfer courses without direct course equivalencies must beevaluated by the corresponding academic department at StonyBrook for specific applicability toward major requirements.

Minor RequirementsStudents are not required to pursue a minor in order to graduate,with the exception of the Business Management major. However, anumber of minors are available for those wishing to select them.

Credit Hour RequirementAt least 120 credits are required for a Bachelor of Arts or aBachelor of Science degree. At least 128 credits are required fora Bachelor of Engineering.
