13:00-14:45[FR] Chair in Social and Solidarity Economy in the South: A dialogue between researchers and field actors
Language: French
Abstract: Since 2012, the UCL’s Chair in Social and
Solidarity Economy in the South (CESSS), a unique
partnership between the university’s NGO Louvain
Coopération and the CIRTES (Interdisciplinary Re-
search Centre on Work, State and Society), facilitates
academic research in social and solidarity economy
grounded in the empirical fields provided by the
NGO’s various development projects in the South.
This session aims at discussing the lessons learned by
the Chair’s two stake holders (PhD students and NGO
staff) in this specific form of partnered research.
Topics covered will be the opportunities but also the
methodological and ethical challenges specific to this
form of research. In this session, we will also discuss
and consider ways for improvement for future
partnered research.
SOCRATE AUDITORIUM 10
10:00-12:00[FR] SECOIA: Acknowledging social economy enterprises in the Walloon region
Language: French
Abstract: This workshop’s aim is to discuss with
social economy actors about a recognition system for
social economy enterprises in the Walloon Region.
The workshop will be based on the presentation
of the main results of the SECOIA project (Social
Economy Impact Assessment). This research
project, commissioned by the Walloon Region,
identified the specific practices of social economy
enterprises as well as the recognized effects of
these practices. Researchers have studied (through
three consultation phases) the possibility of using
indicators of these practices to build a recognition
system for social economy enterprises. International
experts who have had similar experiences in their
countries (Canada - Quebec, France, and Switzerland)
will be invited to enrich the debates.
The number of spots available for this workshop is
limited.

[EN] Cooperative energy: Toward consumer engagement in the energy transition?
Language: English
Abstract: Renewable energy cooperatives have been
perceived as ideal institutional models to foster
consumer engagement in sustainable energy gen-
eration and consumption. The present session will
address this topic, gathering representatives of the
European Federation of Renewable Energy Sources
Cooperatives (REScoop.eu) and researchers work-
ing in the field of renewable energy cooperatives
and community energy. Together with the session
moderator, these actors will discuss how energy co-
operatives can promote households’ engagement in
renewable energy production, energy efficiency and
demand-side response, and discuss the possibilities
of establishing further synergy between research
and practice. The format of the session will include
short presentations on the different projects that
REScoop.eu has been developing to engage energy
users in sustainable energy generation and consump-
tion. This will be followed by a plenary discussion
with participation of the audience.

[FR] WISDOM: The elderly’s home: A space for social innovation?
Language: French
Abstract: Ageing in place is a crucial issue in the long-
term care debate and its related reforms all across
Europe. This first WISDOM roundtable will present a
set of social innovations supported by not-for-profit
providers in the domiciliary eldercare in Wallonia.
Researchers and field actors will discuss the kind of
social approaches to health these initiatives refer to
and, more fundamentally, what makes them social
and innovative and to whom.
(Wallonia Social Innovation Domicile) is an
interdisciplinary, interuniversity and partnership
research coordinated by CIRTES (UCL) and interested
on how social enterprises innovate in the field of elderly
home care. WISDOM benefits from funding from the
Walloon Region. The survey, which was conducted
during more than two years, studied in depth 14 cases
of social innovation in Wallonia and Brussels. The
analysis articulates socio-economic approaches to those
of public health.

[FR] When is social finance social?
Language: French (English translation provided)
Abstract: Social finance has drawn a lot of attention
in the aftermath of the financial sector turbulence in
2007-2008. An array of initiatives—e.g. social banks,
crowdfunding, financial cooperatives, socially re-
sponsible investment funds, etc.—have thrived. Our
workshop aimed to identify the structuring features
of the field of social finance and to discuss its bound-
aries. Can social finance be defined through the
public it targets at? Through its practices? Through
its governance structure? Through its social mission?
The workshop will gather together researchers
and practitioners to discuss these questions. The
former will offer an analytical framework that will be
enriched and questioned by the latter on the basis of
their ground experience and knowledge of the social
finance sector. The theorization of social finance
appears to be at its early stages. This workshop is
aimed to bring a contribution towards this end.

[FR] How to mobilize actors and researchers to foster social economy? The case of digitalization in the services sector
Language: French
Abstract: If collaboration between the world of
research and the actors of the social enterprises
world is often desired by both sides, the setting
up of such collaboration is often complex: both
the temporality and the objectives of Researchers
differ from those in the field. Hence, it requires
developing a mutual and realistic understanding of
the expectations and contributions of each other’s.
This seminar will approach this issue through the
development of a concrete case: the impact of new
technologies on work and society structuration.
Indeed, the use of digital technologies in the
field of services highlight different questions:
form and framework of employment; relations
between enterprises/providers, users and workers;
accessibility to services ... All these issues affect
social protection systems, the world of work, and the
equity and equality in the access of certain services.
Social enterprises will faced with these issues and a
partnership with the world of research could enable
them to anticipate this phenomenon and position
themselves as best as possible in this digital economy
and to foster a positive development for all.

[EN] The future of renewable energy cooperatives in the European energy governance
Language: English
Abstract: In this second session dedicated to
cooperative energy, researchers and practitioners
working in this field will discuss what roles renewable
energy cooperatives can play in the current and
future energy policy governance regime, in Europe
and elsewhere. Questions to be addressed include:
to which extent is European policy supportive of
energy cooperatives and communities? What are the
main divergences between European nations in this
respect? How is the 4th package of proposals for the
reform of EU energy legislation going to change the
current situation? How to build stronger partnerships
between energy cooperatives and governmental
authorities at the European, national and local
levels? The format of the session will include short
presentations on the advocacy activities of REScoop.
eu and on the ways energy cooperatives have
sought to build collaborations with European and
local authorities. This will be followed by a plenary
discussion with participation of the audience.

[FR] Labels in social finance: opportunity or threat?
Language: French
Abstract: In view of the development of financial
products and actors in the field of social finance,
labels may help consumers to make sure that
financial institutions comply with ethical, social and
environmental charters. However, the proliferation
of labels entails the risk of a confusion. What should
be the foundations of these labels? What should
they be governed and controlled? Are they effective
in the sense that they deliver enhanced information
for consumers? What risks do they entail (negative
reputational chain effects)?
Social finance actors will gather together to tackle
these issues in order to outline new perspectives on
the development of labels.

[EN] The PhDs paths for exploring social enterprises
Language: English
Abstract: The session has been co-designed by
participating PhDs to the summer school and it will
consist of working group of PhD students discussing
the different lenses they use for studying social
enterprises. During this session, researchers, in a
group exercise, will identify, present and open a
discussion as regards the diversity of methodological
lenses that aims to approach these economic
actors and the challenges that they are facing for
conducting the research. Such session aims to create
a debate about the different approaches. As an
7
example, one can think of questions such as: What is
the researchers’ knowledge interest? What are the
consequences in terms of research design? What kind
of data should be collected? How does one produce
valid interpretation? The working groups will aim
at addressing these questions and at favouring
networking among PhD students. At the end of
the session the election of the next PhD students
representative and the network potentialities will be
conducted.

[EN] Exchanges on researching and practising social enterprise: A dialogue about possible common horizons
Language: English
Abstract: The present session gathers for the first
time the main EU-level representatives of social
enterprise practitioners as well as some national
umbrella organizations. Both actors and networks
traditionally involved in SE and some new actors that
have recently arrived to the field will participate.
Together with some researchers and the session
moderator, they will discuss the value of research
within their organizations, suggest possible research
lines for the future and discuss the relevance of
establishing an stable mechanism for stakeholders
and researchers to meet informally regularly. A
related issue to be tackled in the session will be
how to support sustained stakeholder involvement
beyond the duration of research projects? The
format of the session will be a fish bowl presentation
of all the organizations and a plenary discussion with
participation of the audience.
