1. About MCYM

The Malankara Catholic Youth Movement (MCYM) of Kerala dates back to the second half of the 1960s. In

the wake of the Second Vatican Council and motivated by great the visionary Most Rev. Dr.Zacarias Mar

Athanasius, church started to discuss about the formation of a strong youth movement. Named as ‘Kerala

Catholica Yuvajana Sangadana’, MCYM in Thiruvalla Diocese was formed on17th Nov 1967, under the

president ship of Msgr. Mathew Nedungattu at Vennikkulam.

MCYM aims at total development of youth and integral liberation of society. Additionally, it is an endeavor

to equip the youths to continue the mission of God through Malankara Catholic Church. Built on the

founding principle of evangelization, MCYM focuses on spiritual, intellectual, social cultural and political

development of youth and society.

The errand behind the formation of this movement was to develop youth in spirituality and faith in the

context of catholic teachings and beliefs, thereby ensures a strong foundation to church. With the

expectation keeping in tone, movement first flourishes in middle part of Kerala. Meanwhile the youth

movement in Thiruvalla Diocese was profoundly developed and Bishops foresight to integrate the whole

Malankara youth under one roof paved the way for renaming this movement as MCYM in Thiruvalla

Diocese. At the same time, it was forced to be united in the Kerala level because of the federal

administrative style of Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM). Later, the youth movement activities

scattered in different diocese was brought together in 1990 leading to the formation of the MCYM Central

Secretariat

The MCYM in different dioceses had its own constitution, flag anthem, motto patron saint and style of

function. In view of giving uniformity, the central secretariat succeeded to agree on a common constitution.

It was promulgated in 1992 September 20. Central Secretariat initiate several steps within short span to

reclaim the youth activities to reach up to its optimum and brought various mission regions scattered all

over India, N America, Germany and Middle East together and also given equivalent status to Diocese under

its new constitution and this bestowed a new boost to MCYM activities in these regions.

Spirituality and knowledge trigger the real liberation in the society. MCYM strongly believes that

overall development of a youth possible through an integral approach and spirituality plays a key

role. This multi disciplinary approach made MCYM to visualize its goals and strategies in a different

line. Remembering the living word of God ‘remember your creator in the days of your youth’

(Ecclesiastes 12.1, MCYM developing its strategies and missions.

2. Introduction

Training and development is an integral part of any growing institution, especially a system

targeting personal development and societal change. It plays a vital role in the enhancement of

attitude, skill and knowledge of individuals and groups. To understand the nuances of scientific and

social development and to become change agents in the society, continuous, innovative and most

sophisticated techniques of training is required. Training and development can significantly

contribute in fostering personal growth and interpersonal skills. In order to cope up with the

challenging professional competency of emerging youth, people are expected to undergo series of

programs in related areas. At this juncture, Malankara Catholic Youth Movement (MCYM) is

stepping in to a new endeavor to empower young talents of the church.

3. Esprit

MCYM strongly believes in the word of God – ‘When vision vanishes people perish’ and found its

mission as creating great leaders and visionaries. Above all, MCYM deeply grounded in the

principles of living God and dedicated to serve people and church. Esprit is a training and

development initiative of MCYM to improve knowledge, skill and attitude of young members of the

church community. It envisions at imparting right vision, inculcating value leadership and effective

execution of church mission. Esprit focuses at developing young talents and change agents through

continuous training and development activities. The proposed training program Esprit is a one

year project comprises of six 2 days sessions targets youth members of MCYM. Each program

consist of theoretical as well as practical sessions on different topics like goal setting, value

leadership, group dynamism, oral and written communication skills, career development and

general awareness.

3.1. Objective

Developing young talents and motivate them to be a part of social change and church

development

Creating value leadership, group dynamism and moral thinking among youths

Enhancing knowledge, attitude and skills of people and motivate them to contribute for

overall development of nearby community

Developing, grooming and molding of young professionals and preparing them to cope

up with the emerging challenges

3.2. Methodology and Program Design

Esprit will provide an opportunity and broad structure for the development of individuals especially

their behavioral skills. It will also help them in attaining personal growth by increasing their current

awareness, personality and skills at each level which can expand the horizons of human intellect.

While encapsulating, it envisions to improving personal skills of youths and thereby stimulate the

race to reach personal and group goals by inculcating the sense of team work, team spirit, and

inter-team collaborations. To improve skills, competency and general awareness of youths, MCYM,

provide a platform for developing innovative thinking by demonstrating different techniques. It not

only unravels the ‘real self’ but also improves the overall efficiency of individual and group.

Ultimately it will help to improve the quality of individual as well as teams. The cutting edge of

knowledge and practice will motivate them to learn within.

Esprit – the youth development training program is a one year course consists of six two day

sessions. This will be conducted twice in a month from Saturday morning to Sunday evening. This

100 hr training program incorporates theoretical as well as practical sessions. Initial training will be

given to senior members of MCYM under the leadership of veteran trainers and experienced

leaders of the Church. This training team is expected to bring the mission of Esprit to around 5000

youths of the 126 parishes of Malankara Catholic Church.

A trainers group consist of 30 will be selected under the recommendation of concerned directors

and senate of each district (ie: three per district). The candidate shall be in between the age group

of 18 and 28 and qualification should have at least Higher Secondary. ‘Train the trainers’ program

will be under the leadership of seven office bearers of MCYM, professional trainers and the

selected members of earlier leaders. The program will be commenced with a 5 day workshop for

the selected members of MCYM. This team will lead Esprit programs in their own areas.

3.3. Expected Outcome

Esprit paves a way for the creation outstanding leaders and visionaries for the Church

Esprit participants will bring the visions to other members of MCYM

Youths will get proper guidance and mentoring for their growth and development

Youth of MCYM will be equipped to strive for outstanding achievements

5. Regional Training Programs

Regional training program is an initiative to impart Esprit Vision to all the youth members of

church. This will be at 9 locations and will be lead by trained senior leaders of MCYM. Duration of

the Regional training workshop is 2 days.

6. Key Features

Esprit allots a senior member as a guide/mentor to each participant. Participants can consult with the expert during his whole career

Annexure Training Syllabus

A. Goal Setting Planning to Live Your Life Your Way Many people feel as if they're adrift in the world. They work hard, but they don't seem to get anywhere worthwhile. A key reason that they feel this way is that they haven't spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and haven't set themselves formal goals. After all, would you set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Probably not! Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality. The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily, lead you astray. Why Set Goals? Goal setting is used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge, and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals, and you'll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. You will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your own ability and competence in achieving the goals that you've set. Starting to Set Personal Goals You set your goals on a number of levels:

First you create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve.

Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals.

Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals.

This is why we start the process of goal setting by looking at your lifetime goals. Then, we work down to the things that you can do in, say, the next five years, then next year, next month, next week, and today, to start moving towards them. Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making.

To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some of the following categories (or in other categories of your own, where these are important to you):

Career - What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve? Financial - How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career

goals? Education - Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and

skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals? Family - Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you

want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family? Artistic - Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? Attitude - Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you

behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.)

Physical - Are there any athletic goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?

Pleasure - How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your life is for you!)

Public Service - Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how? Spend some time brainstorming these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals that you can focus on. As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want. (If you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants - however, make sure that you also remain true to yourself!)

Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan, and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals. At an early stage, your smaller goals might be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your higher level goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting. Finally review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life.

Staying on Course Once you've decided on your first set of goals, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your To-Do List on a daily basis. Periodically review the longer term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience. (A good way of doing this is to schedule regular, repeating reviews using a computer-based diary.) SMART Goals A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants (some of which we've included in parenthesis), SMART usually stands for:

S - Specific (or Significant). M - Measurable (or Meaningful). A - Attainable (or Action-Oriented). R - Relevant (or Rewarding). T - Time-bound (or Trackable).

For example, instead of having "To sail around the world" as a goal, it's more powerful to say "To have completed my trip around the world by December 31, 2015." Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand! Further Goal Setting Tips The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective, achievable goals: State each goal as a positive statement - Express your goals positively – "Execute this technique well" is a much better goal than "Don't make this stupid mistake."

Be precise: Set precise goals, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you'll know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it.

Set priorities - When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by having too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.

Write goals down - This crystallizes them and gives them more force. Keep operational goals small - Keep the low-level goals that you're working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward.

Set performance goals, not outcome goals - You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. It can be quite dispiriting to fail to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control!

In business, these reasons could be bad business environments or unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, they could include poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck.

If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals, and draw satisfaction from them.

Set realistic goals - It's important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (for example, employers, parents, media, or society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions.

It's also possible to set goals that are too difficult because you might not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how much skill you need to develop to achieve a particular level of performance.

Achieving Goals When you've achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress that you've made towards other goals. If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. All of this helps you build the self-confidence you deserve. With the experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans: If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goal harder. If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goal a little easier. If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so. If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix

this. Feed lessons learned back into your goal setting. Remember too that your goals will change as time goes on. Adjust them regularly to reflect growth in your knowledge and experience, and if goals do not hold any attraction any longer, consider letting them go. Goal Setting Example For her New Year's Resolution, Susan has decided to think about what she really wants to do with her life. Her lifetime goals are as follows: Career - "To be managing editor of the magazine that I work for." Artistic - "To keep working on my illustration skills. Ultimately I want to have my own show in

our downtown gallery." Physical - "To run a marathon."

Now that Susan has listed her lifetime goals, she then breaks down each one into smaller, more manageable goals. Let's take a closer look at how she might break down her lifetime career goal - becoming managing editor of her magazine: Five-year goal: "Become deputy editor." One-year goal: "Volunteer for projects that the current Managing Editor is heading up." Six-month goal: "Go back to school and finish my journalism degree." One-month goal: "Talk to the current managing editor to determine what skills are needed to do

the job." One-week goal: "Book the meeting with the Managing Editor."

As you can see from this example, breaking big goals down into smaller, more manageable goals makes it far easier to see how the goal will get accomplished.

Key Points Goal setting is an important method of: Deciding what you want to achieve in your life. Separating what's important from what's irrelevant, or a distraction. Motivating yourself. Building your self-confidence, based on successful achievement of goals.

Set your lifetime goals first. Then, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Keep the process going by regularly reviewing and updating your goals. And remember to take time to enjoy the satisfaction of achieving your goals when you do so. If you don't already set goals, do so, starting now. As you make this technique part of your life, you'll find your career accelerating, and you'll wonder how you did without it! B. Motivation and Attitude A team is formed when individuals with a similar interest come together to realize a common dream. The team members must think of their team first and all other personal interests should come later. Every individual must contribute equally as per his capability to achieve the predefined targets successfully within the desired time frame. Motivation and attitude go hand in hand in increasing the output of any team. You need a match stick for fire, you need ink for a pen to write, and similarly an individual needs motivation to perform. Every individual has some latent talent and needs a push for the talent to come out. Without motivation, the team members feel reluctant to work and also tend to spread negativity around. Human beings are hungry for praise and appreciation. It is the prime duty of the team leader to appreciate his team members whenever they have done something great. This way they feel happy and motivated to perform even better the next time. Set a deadline for the submission of work. All the employees submitting the work within the stipulated time frame must be appreciated in public. Circulate a mail among all the employees appreciating your team member’s efficiency. Any person coming out with a brilliant idea should be suitably rewarded. It is not always you give cash to motivate your employees, but even small tokens of appreciation can make a difference. Reward your team member with anything he likes. Appreciating one member does not mean you will neglect or criticize the other members of the team who could not perform up to the mark this time. It is the duty of the team leader to motivate them so that they perform well the next time. Ask them to “BUCK UP”. A single member’s performance can hardly make a difference to the team’s performance; every member has to contribute equally for the maximum output. Celebrate your team’s success inviting all your team members. Take them out for a lunch to a nearby restaurant. They will feel happy and also come closer to each other this way. Give a pat on their back to appreciate their hard work. Titles such as “Best Employee of the month” and “Best Team Member” also go a long way in motivating the team members. The names of the best performers must be displayed on the notice boards for everyone to see. Incentives and perks also motivate the employees to a large extent. If any team member does something outstanding do not forget to appreciate him on an open forum and also ask the other members to reach to his level as well. Avoid making fun of your colleagues. It is considered highly unprofessional. Don’t spread negativity around. Don’t depend on blame games or spread unnecessary rumours about your team members. Motivation alone can’t create wonders; it needs to be coupled with positive attitude of the team members to ensure high performance of the team. Adopt a positive attitude at work. Do not always find faults in others. Listen to your team members as well. Don’t assume things or draw conclusions on your own. Be a little more flexible and adjusting to avoid conflicts at work place. Sit and discuss issues with your team members to reach to an alternative. Results can’t be achieved

unless and until you believe in yourself. The will power to do something is important. One should have the urge to perform. Always try to look at life from a larger perspective. Things can not always be the way you like, its better to accept things as it is sometimes. Remember after heavy rains, there is always a clear sky. Problems might crop up anytime, but it is always better to grin and move on. Do not overreact on petty things. Don’t be too adamant or rigid, instead be a little forgiving. It is absolutely okay if you take the initiative and say “Sorry”. This magical word goes a long way in reducing conflicts to a large extent. Don’t unnecessary create tensions for others and yourself as well. Don’t be disheartened if someone comes to you and corrects you for your mistakes; do take it in a positive and healthy way.
