Spices are one of the commodities which influence on the Sri Lankan Culture, Politics and the Economy for over 2000 years. Among them Cinnamon is the most important since Quality of the True Cinnamon produced in Sri Lanka is unmatchable with the same Cinnamon produced in other countries. Because of that “Ceylon Cinnamon” is well established brand name in the world spice trade. Our future dream is strengthening the all aspects of cinnamon industry such as production technologies, transferring technology and providing residential quality scientific and artistic way of training for all the stake holders related to the industry from grassroots level to executive levels. It is needed to blossom cinnamon industry with mechanization, vale addition and product diversification. The world is more health conscious and quality assurance to be complying with sanitary requirement of the consuming countries is addressed while conducting training on cinnamon processing. To fulfill those national needs of the cinnamon industry, Cinnamon Research Station is transformed to National Cinnamon Research & Training Center (NCR&TC) under Department of Export Agriculture, Ministry of Minor Export Crop Promotion. The NCR&TC provides training from raising a quality seedling, field planting, and crop management to harvesting, processing & grading. The main aim of the NCR&TC is to train the growers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and the Cinnamon processors and traders on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). At the moment of ceremonial opening of NCR&TC, I convey my warm greetings to all the scientists, organizations and the technocrats, who have taken the responsibilities for addressing these national issues a grand success

As the Deputy Minister of Minor Export Crop Promotion, I am pleased to give this message on the occasion of the opening of hostel for the National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre. The Department of Export Agriculture under the Ministry of Minor Export Crop Promotion has several research centres and extension arm geared to develop sustainable research best suited for the promotion of Export Agricultural Crops in the country. One key Research Centre of DEA, National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre, was established in Matara as recognizing the vital role that cinnamon plays in the Sri Lankan economy, especially in southern Sri Lanka where it is extensively cultivated. The work of NCR&TC has seen the introduction of modern technologies to cinnamon sector, as well as the further development of our traditional forms of agriculture with a deep understanding of their scientific roots. It also conducts training programs to disseminate knowledge on the scientific methods for cinnamon cultivation and processing. The hostel facility that opens today will serve to enable and encourage stakeholders all over the country to get the benefits of training from NCR&TC and abridge the course of knowledge generation to application which ultimately motivate those engaged in cinnamon cultivation and processing to reach the highest standards required by the developing market conditions. I wish all the success for trainees and hope they can contribute to develop the cinnamon sector and make more economical gains for the country.

The Ministry of Minor Export Crop Promotion was established as a strategy to achieve the target of creating Sri Lanka, “the wonder of Asia” with the objective of to improve qualitatively and quantitatively the production and selling of minor export crops to enhance the local economy and the farmer life-style. With the Vision of making “Sri Lanka – The spice hub of Asia” and the Mission of “Leading the spice industry to achieve the excellence in cultivation, production, marketing and promotion” as the Ministry, we are dedicated to developing a stronger and more versatile service to realize the highest degree of minor export crop sector satisfaction.Sri Lanka has been famous for its quality spices due to its intrinsic value since time immemorial. Amongst them cinnamon has undoubtedly become the most important spice crop by accounting for about 85% of the world trade for true cinnamon and representing fourth largest export agriculture crop of Sri Lanka. However “Ceylon Cinnamon” yet occupies the domination in the world market, the industry is facing and will be facing future challenges in every aspect of its production as an export crop. For instance, increasing demand for quality produce, low production costs for substitutes like Cassia cinnamon, high sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards, increasing demand for organic products and shortage of new technology. The cinnamon industry in Sri Lanka has been a traditional industry and now becoming a plantation sector crop entering new stake holders. Thus, to improve quality and efficient productivity along with the consumer demand, strengthening of training and technology transfer has become a key prerequisite. Understanding the requirement of addressing these challenges urgently, with the guidance of The Ministry of Minor Export Crop Promotion, National Cinnamon Training Center was established attached to the Cinnamon Research Station, Department of Export Agriculture, Palolpitiya, Thihagoda, in 2012. The key objective of the training center is to make awareness of Good Agricultural practices and Good Manufacturing practices in the cinnamon industry while providing training and new technology for all stake stakeholders on nursery management, field establishment, crop management, harvesting, processing and grading. The training prospectus was introduced to upgrade the knowledge and awareness of different categories of stakeholders in the industry. On behalf of the Ministry of Minor Export Crop Promotion it gives me a great pleasure to place a message in the training prospectus of the cinnamon training unit established for the first time in Sri Lanka and indeed it will promote the segment of minor crop portfolio in the national economy .

Foreword

On behalf of the National Cinnamon Research and Training Center (NCR&TC), It gives me a great pleasure to introduce the training prospectus of the cinnamon training unit established for the first time in the country for the benefit of cinnamon industry covering fourteen districts of Sri Lanka. The NCR&TC of the Department of Export Agriculture was established in 1986 with a view to conduct research and training on cinnamon cultivation, processing and product development. During the past 26 years it has contributed immensely to strengthen knowledge on different areas of research through its new findings, infrastructure development and human resource development addressing the national issues of significance. The NCR&TC has a vital role to pay directing research and training to meet the current demand and challenges of the stakeholders. Presently, the NCR&TC is striving to achieve this goals, mainly through its prioritized research plan and different kind of training programmes mainly focusing on plantation management and cinnamon peeling. This training prospectus will no doubt help conducting the training programmes in a methodical manner and improving the knowledge and practical experience of cinnamon growers. It is also my fervent hope that I along with my dedicated staff will be able to strengthen the cinnamon industry by ensure generation and dissemination of appropriate technology for the betterment of the motherland.K.G.G.
