Take a ride back into history over the scenic and historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad from Virginia City, Nevada through tunnel 4 to Gold Hill and back. The Virginia & Truckee is by far the most famous of all American short lines. In its heyday, as many as 45 trains per day arrived and departed Virginia City. U.S. presidents and dignitaries from the world over rode the ornate V&T trains. Completed in 1869, the Virginia & Truckee hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines of Virginia City. Today, 80 years after the last train left the Comstock, you can once again ride over this historic railroad. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad operates 100-year old steam engines and heritage diesel locomotives. You will have a choice of riding on open aire cars or a caboose, all of which are nearly 100 years old. The train, still following its original 150-year old right of way goes through some of the most famous of the bonanza Comstock mines, the ruins of which are advantageously viewed from the train. All trips are narrated by the conductor. The train takes you on a leisurely 35-minute narrated round trip to the historic station in the town of Gold Hill. Passengers can get off the train at Gold Hill and board the next train (except for the last train of the day). You will see many historic mining and scenic sights. The V&T Railroad departs from the original 1870 depot in Virginia City at 166 F Street. For pricing, please call 775 847-0380, or email us at [email protected].
