ArtWorks

On Saturday, March 15, at Lincoln-Way East High School, students from over 30 schools participated

in ArtWorks, an annual fine arts festival showcasing the visual, musical, dramatic, and dance talents

of students in the local school districts. ArtWorks was open to the community and allowed everyone

to view the artworks on display, listen to musical performances and participate in some hands-on art

making workshops! The best part about it all was that it was FREE!

Student artist representatives from Indian Trail were: Ryan Zych, Megan McDonald, Sophia Drozd, Eliana Morlan,

Amanda Canning, Zachary McFarlin, Rubie Roderick, Dominic Owens, Sophia White, Joseph Kopinski, Mackenzie

Mitchell, Sophia Acosta, Miguel Garcia, Megan Gobby, Niyam Nielsen, Ellie Pipikios, Ethan Ramos, Taylor Rossberg,

Gabrielle Juarez, Aldron Reed, Makayla Kelly, Vivienna Rutovic, Katherine Kerlin, Matthew Zych, Kaleigh Young,

Aiden Soroko, Kayli Mendoza, Jayme Jester, Nicholas Kassitas, Brayden Mortell, Olivia Blameuser, Emma Kelly,

Abigail Salgado, and Shea Fernandes.

4th Grade

March has been a busy month for our 4th grade students. Our fourth graders have worked so hard these

past few weeks on ISAT testing. Calming strategies, excellent test-taking skills, and aiming high definitely helped

prepare everyone. In addition, our students also received special visits from our 2nd grade buddies and they

personally delivered good luck cards! ITSCO provided mints, a variety of fruit, water, and other treats in their

ISAT goodie bag! Parents and teachers wrote letters all about how proud we are of our students.

Once ISAT testing was finished, the fourth grade teachers asked their students, “Which of the three

subject areas (Reading, Science, or Math) on the ISAT test did you feel the most confident?” Students wrote a

self-reflection.

Here are a few comments written from the students:

“I felt that the extended response questions in Math I was well-prepared for.”

“I think Science was my strongest subject because I could understand what the questions were asking.”

“I chose Reading because I love to read all the different stories.”

Our 4th Grade Rocked the ISAT!

FIRST GRADE FIELD TRIP

The first grade students experienced the pleasure of not only reading a book, but also seeing it performed on

stage! We went to see Are You My Mother? The play was based on P. D. Eastman’s book and featured an upbeat

musical score and imaginative sets. The presentation was part of Lincoln-Way District 210 Children’s Theatre

Series and was performed by professional actors. It was an enchanting musical about Baby Bird’s adventure and it

overflowed with courage, determination, and just enough silliness to hold the students’ attention, while still

providing positive messages about what it means to be part of a family.

PE NEWS

As you can see from the pictures below, the sports and health clubbers seem to like their extra time they get to

play, learn, move, and especially have fun.

School Assembly

On March 18, Mr. Nesci of “Cold Blooded Creatures” visited Indian Trail to show off some of

his snakes, tortoises, lizards, and alligators. The kids had great fun as they learned about

reptiles and their important roles in the environment.

Thank you to the Indian Trail SCO for providing this entertaining and educational post-ISAT

opportunity.

THIRD GRADE

Third grade students went on a field trip to Naper Settlement to experience Colonial Times which they are

studying this year. Students were able to experience the lifestyle of the 1800’s through sights, sounds, and smells

as they visited the Blacksmith Shop, Print Shop, and Log House. Students also visited a one-room school house to

see what it was like to be a student in Colonial Times. They participated in hands-on activities lead by guides

dressed in Colonial fashion. Learning and fun was had by all!

Reminder to parents:

Please remember to keep your contact information current. In

case there is a change in your home phone number, cell

number, etc. please send a note to school with your child and

we will update our records.

Project Linus Blankets

The Indian Trail “Make a Difference” Service Club, along with the parents and students of

Indian Trail, helped create 40! blankets that were donated to St. Joseph’s/Provena Medical

Center in Joliet in conjunction with Project Linus. We are very thankful for all the

donations of money, gifts of fleece, and all of the time spent helping us out! The kids had

fun cutting, tying, and giving the gift of warmth during this cold and snowy winter.

A special thanks to the following for their heartfelt donations of fleece material and money:

Gavin Visser, Mackenzie Ramos, Addison Fischer, Sophia Barrett, Ellie Pipikios, Peyton Fischer, Caleb Lee, The

Eldridge Family, Nate & Riley Webster, Bree Faber, Nick Finn, Ben Schwarz, Troop 596, Ryan Schimke, Ivie Sidler,

Lindsay Fortier, Dillon Brandenbury, The Schultz Family, Jack Parsons, Alyssa Amazzalorso, Aiden Soroko,

Shannon O’Lena, Heather Macuga, Mrs. Pfeiffer, and Ms. Schober.

Penguins on Parade!

Second graders were quite busy this past month learning all about penguins. We read about penguins, we wrote

about penguins, we even created a penguin wall! The penguins on the wall are actually glyphs representing personal

traits of the students.

We learned about many different varieties of penguins including the Emperor, African and Adelie. Did you know

that African penguins live near the equator and have to battle the heat instead of the cold? Did you know that NO

penguins live north of the equator? One thing I’m sure you DO know: We had so much fun learning, creating, and

applying our knowledge!

Proof of residency will be new component in student re-registration process The District will incorporate a new component within its student re-registration process: proof of residency.

Currently only parents of students new to the District must show proof of residency. Incorporating this new

component into the process will help ensure we are utilizing District funds for students who are residents.

Beginning in March, parents will be mailed a two-ply form and cover letter of instructions. The form contains a list

of documents needed to prove residency in District 161. Parents will be asked to bring the two-ply form and

associated documents to the District Administrative Center between 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on April 8 or 9, or between

7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on April 10. (The lines will move quickly as there will be no copying of documents – just the marking

of checkboxes.) Upon completion of proof of residency, the student’s username and password for the online re-

registration system will be recorded on the two-ply form. Parents will receive a copy of the form and District

personnel will keep a copy for District records. The online student re-registration system will open on April 8 which

is about one month earlier than in the past. Parents who come to complete the residency check will receive an early

re-registration coupon. The coupon entitles parents to a credit of $20 towards re-registration fees if completed

and paid on or before May 30, 2014. The fee when using the coupon is $130 for each student in Grades 1-8. The

coupon expires on May 30. Beginning May 31, the fee will be $150.

Our Trailblazer Chorus had a fantastic performance at the District 161 Elementary Chorus Concert on March 27. We are proud of our students and look forward to their continued success in 161 music programs as they move on to Walker and Summit Hill Junior High!
