THE NEWSLETTER FOR HILLENDALE CUSTOMERS / Q2 – APRIL-JUNE 2009 Apprentice Adam goesMAD in Africa!Our very own intrepid adventurer,apprentice technician AdamRidings, has been really Making a Difference (MAD) in Kenya withthe Land Rover AdvancedApprenticeship Scheme. To finance the trip, he first raised£450 by climbing Snowdon and then Hillendale doubled it.

Adam travelled to Nairobi, where heteamed up with local teenagers fora Mechanical Awareness Dayproject, aiming to provide the youngfolk with a trade. They shared theirhands on skills and knowledge, andAdam was amazed to discover thatthe wage earned by some of thelocal boys had to provide food andshelter for a family of ten.

In a Masai village, the apprenticesset up a library. They’d broughtboxes of donated books to Africa,and promptly got to work painting,erecting shelves and adding thefinishing touches. The Masai tribecooked food and entertained themwith traditional dancing. The ladswere also treated to a day out intothe bush, helping cut down trees,build fences and herd cattle.

They also visited a local school,where they gave new satchels tothe delighted pupils – and were thenbeaten at football by theyoungsters! Other highlightsincluded a couple of days at theAmboseli Game Reserve and anascent of Mount Kenya.

Adam’s abiding memory was of theKenyan people he met: they hadvery little, but they seemed sohappy. Now, where to next, Adam?

Steve bought his first Defender 110some 18 years ago, following it upwith one of the first Discovery TDimodels. Three years ago he tookdelivery of his first Range Roverand was so impressed that heissued senior members of his staffwith a Range Rover, twoFreelanders and a Discovery.

With a team of 22, PMP is verymuch a family business, workingmainly for United Utilities within 50miles of their Rossendale base, butnow also expanding into Yorkshire.Steve says, “It’s essential to havefour wheel drive to gain access tothe workplace. All our staff feel thevehicles are fantastic – a criticalpart of their equipment.”

Steve’s leisure passions are fell running and climbing. He’s alsoan assistant team leader with theRossendale & Pendle MountainRescue Team. They have their ownfleet of Land Rovers – all servicedat Hillendale – but recently Steveused his own Range Rover when he was first to arrive at a rescuescene. Hazardous conditions weretoo much for the ambulance, but Steve’s vehicle made it throughto the casualty and brought him to safety.

The Range Rover suits Steve in allaspects of his life: for recreationand business he can load it full ofgear, happily take a client out – or even use it to help a casualty!

MEET THE TEAMJOHN MCDONNELLSALES SPECIALISTAw, we miss him already! John has just retired and leftHillendale – but the good news isthat he’s busy beginning an excitingnew life in Hungary!

In the 1990s John started to workwith the Land Rover brand andfound ‘the perfect match’, as he’sowned Land Rovers personally sincethe 1970s.

His father served with the King'sAfrican Rifles, so John spent ‘thebest childhood imaginable’ travellingaround Europe and Africa, and helived in Kenya between the ages ofeight and sixteen. He has manyenthralling stories of his time inAfrica – where he learned to drive aLand Rover at 13 out in the bush!

Wolverhampton born John was veryimpressed with Hungary when hewent to Budapest, representingHillendale as a finalist in the awardsfor Dealer of the Year. He visitedthe country again recently, and itwasn’t long before he’d snapped upa property there.

His future plans? He’ll take a couple of years bringinghis new home up to scratch,possibly spending some time in India over the winter months.
