Frédéric Berg is a reporter. As a trail runner,
his performances include finishing two
legendary trail races—the Diagonale des
Fous (three times) and the UTMB (once)—
Alexis Berg is a photographer.
All the photographs in this book
are from his round-the-world trip
as a photographer for the Ultra-Trail
World Tour.

This race is a legend, the ultimate
adventure. A story of the desert, of
life, of friendship. For thirty years, the
Marathon des Sables (MdS) has been
blazing its very own trail on the running
race scene. More than elsewhere, it is
a tearful affair at the finish of the last
of the six stages, when, after 155 miles,
everything suddenly comes to a stop.
A unique feeling at the end of a unique
week almost cut off from the rest of
the world, in the middle of the Sahara
in southern Morocco.

Since it was first launched by Patrick
Bauer in 1986, the MdS has always
been a story of powerful friendships
and intense sharing, starting with
the tents that receive the runners in
groups of eight, which are taken down
each morning and re-erected at the
next bivouac. The MdS is a massive
race—the 2015 race registered a
record starting lineup of over 1,300
runners from fifty countries—as
well as being an extremely lonely
experience. In the hollow of the dunes,
on the plateaus, in the ocean of sand,
each person finds themself alone with
their self, each day, facing the silence
and the wind, and the heat, which
can easily soar into the hundreds.
There are strict rules governing
self-sufficiency: All competitors are
required to carry in their backpacks
all the food they need for the week’s
meals, as well as clothing and
bedding. It is a totalizing event, but
its spectacular beauty makes all the
effort worthwhile.

C’est un mythe, une aventure absolue.
Une histoire du désert, une histoire de
vie, une histoire d’amitié. Depuis trente
Sud marocain.
Depuis sa création en 1986 par
Patrick Bauer, le MdS est toujours
une histoire d’amitiés fortes, de
partage intense, à commencer par les
tentes qui accueillent les coureurs
par groupes de huit, démontées
chaque matin et remontées au
bivouac suivant. Course massive
qui a réuni en 2015 un record de
plus de mille trois cents partants
venus de cinquante pays, le MdS
est aussi une expérience hautement
solitaire. Au creux des dunes, sur
marathon des sables
The course
The Marathon des Sables follows a
different route each year across a region
of Morocco southeast of Ouarzazate,
near the famous Merzouga dunes, the
Erg Chebbi. On the other hand, the race
format does not change: 155 miles in six
stages, including a 26.2-mile marathon
and another stage over 50 miles long,
the only one to carry on into the night.
All the stages start in the morning,
and throughout the day competitors
turn up at the bivouac. Apart from a
few rocky hills, the course is fairly flat,
although running on sand remains a
major obstacle. As an Ultra-Trail World
Tour event, the Marathon des Sables
has been won on several occasions
by female ultrarunners from America
or Europe. In the men’s race, on the
other hand, with the one exception of a
Jordanian winner, the Moroccans have
always come out on top since 1997.
depuis 1997.

Each morning at the start of a stage, more than
1,300 runners move off and come together, looking
so tiny when seen from above, like ants trying to
find their way to their next place of shelter.
107
Like a solitary shipwrecked sailor with waves
towering all around, this man is lost in the
vastness of this awesomely fascinating ocean
of pure sand.

108
The Marathon des Sables is a race like
no other, at once larger than life in terms of
organization but brought back to a human scale
every day, in the middle of the desert, when you
have to confront the walls of sand.
109
The back of the pack is content to hike, not
finishing some stages until sundown. Their days are
not so intensive but very long, and they leave little
time for rest.

Among the leaders, the competition is fierce.
Here, the two frontrunners and overall winners
in 2015: the Moroccan Abdelkader El Mouaziz
accompanying his fellow countryman Rachid El
Morabity.
Morabity.

The runners have the good fortune to pass by
the spectacular and majestic Merzouga dunes
(Erg Chebbi). They are the highest dunes in
Morocco. Most importantly, some would say,
they are the most beautiful dunes in the world.
Merzouga (erg Chebbi). Ce sont les plus hautes
du Maroc. Pour certains, ce sont surtout les plus
belles dunes du monde.

On the Marathon des Sables, each day is
a whole new world, for the desert is never
ordinary or the same. Likewise, the course is also
completely changed from one year to the next.
113
The aid stations, the bivouac, everything is
meticulously organized. There are strict rules
regarding self-sufficiency. Even the amount of
water distributed per day is carefully checked.

The eight-person tents are arranged by
nationality, and often also by groups of friends
or by team. They are mainly a place to recover,
offering shelter from the aggressive sun and wind.
115
You cannot tell from the picture, but these
trailers are waiting in line for the infirmary. After
several days of racing, the main issue is fatigue—
the private battle every runner has to fight.

This Danish competitor carries the memory of a
dead child on his back. Each person brings their
own story, their own secret motivation to the desert.
117
The sight, each morning before setting off at
daybreak, is one of silent little rituals, as the runners
get ready to head off into the desert.

Despite the blisters and tiredness, despite the
freeze-dried meals and the short nights, there are
always a few laughs. The race is still for fun.
119
A week in the desert is both very long and very
short. Even if the Marathon des Sables is the kind of
race that you want to run just once in a lifetime, there
are also many who come back each year for more.

In 2016, the Moroccan Rachid El Morabity won
his fourth Marathon des Sables. He is on his way
to equaling Mohamad Ahansal’s five wins but still
has some way to go before catching the 10-time
winner, Mohamad’s big brother, Lahcen Ahansal.
Lahcen Ahansal, dix fois vainqueur.

After crossing the finish line, Rachid El Morabity
falls into the arms of Patrick Bauer, who remains
the emblematic director of a race he launched
in 1986.
