Program SynopsisThe Trail Blazers are coming off a 16-win season, their 12th winning seasonin the past 16 years. Overall, the Trail Blazers have won 57% (323-244) oftheir games since their inaugural year (1992-1993).

The Trail Blazers have made their mark on the defensive end, having finishedeach of the past 6 years ranked in the top 15 in the country in defensivepoints allowed. This past season, JWCC finished as the #2 stingiest defensein the country and have finished the season 1st (2007-2008) and 4th (2006-07) over the past few years. In those past 6 years, the Trail Blazers havegiven up less than 68 points per game each season.

Last season was a season of ‘New’. The Trail Blazers welcomed 14 new facesto the program and relied on only 1 returning sophomore. As a result, theinexperience at the college level provided a season with a variety of brilliantmoments and moments of challenges. Two sophomores from last year’steam are currently on 4-year rosters, with Christian Bibi Ndongo finding ahome at NCAA Division I University of Louisiana-Monroe and 2-year teammember Bradson Ephraim making his mark at Malone University in the stateof Ohio. Those two former Blazers put the total number of alumni in 4-yearprograms at eight, in seven different states (Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas,South Carolina, Ohio, and Louisiana).

Coach Mike Elbe was the original, founding coach of the Trail Blazers in theearly 1990's. As the first athletic director and men's basketball coach, hestarted the program and developed it to its current state today. There havebeen three head coaches in the history of the program, two of them (CoachElbe and Coach Hoyt) are on this year's staff. This year’s staff also welcomesCoach Pat Lepper, a former player for both Coach Elbe and Coach Hoyt, whohas spent the past 4 years at the NCAA Division I, as a player and a coach.

Q & A COACH ELBEWhat are your expectations, as a team, going into the 2010-11season?With 10 returning players and 8 new recruits that I have highexpectations for, I am very optimistic for this season. One of ourgoals is to win 20 games and after winning 19 games in both the2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, we are due to get this objectivedone!

With a solid nucleus returning, how has the pre-season trainingbeen different than other years? Our coaching staff has spent less time teaching what we expect aspeople, students and basketball players. Because of that, we havehad more time to spend on other productive items during teamdevelopment sessions. Last year, with only 1 returning player(Bradson Ephraim), we spent a lot of time instilling our program toso many new players.

How about the freshman class? Have they adapted to the collegeenvironment, both athletically and academically?I am very happy with our freshman class. Each of them has fit themold of good people, good students and good basketballplayers. That is extremely important when we recruit a young maninto our basketball family. This is one of the “potentially best” fresh-men classes I have had in my 12 years at John Wood. But I am thefirst to say that potential is only as good as what you make of it.Each of them have a long way to go, however they have the poten-tial and are willing to work and be coached to reach the team’sgoals.

What will be the staples of this year’s team? Defense, post play, perimeter shooting…?As with all of our teams, I expect us to be in the top 5 teams nation-ally in defensive field goal percentage (the real indicator of yourdefensive effectiveness), a team that is well prepared, plays hardand competes. I do think we have a variety of weapons offensivelythis year. Our post play should be solid and we have some verycapable shooters on the perimeters as well as a couple of guardswho can really attack the basket. Our ability to take care of thebasketball and limit our turnovers will be one indicator that willhelp or hurt us in achieving our 20-win goal this season.

Welcome by Coach Elbe

Welcome to another year of Trail Blazer Basketball. We areexcited about the possibilites that this year’s group willbring to the campus community and to the basketball floor. With 10 returning players in our program and a host of tal-ented freshmen, our staff is anxious to work toward reach-ing our goals. All of us look forward to seeing you duringanother exciting year of Trail Blazer Basketball!

Welcome to John Wood Basketball

Playing in a league that has the defending nationalchampion is always a tough test. How competitive willRegion XXIV be this season?Last year, the NJCAA national tournament semi-finalgame was Kirkwood vs Lewis and Clark where Kirkwoodwon in double overtime. Had Lewis and Clark won thegame, they would have played Lincoln College in thechampionship game making it a Midwest AthleticConference and Region 24 national title game. LincolnCollege ended up beating Kirkwood in the final game towin the NJCAA national championship last season. Asalways, I think our conference and region is one of thetoughest in the nation and we prove it when we go tothe national tournament and in our play against NJCAAdivision one colleges.

JWCC has a challenging non-conference schedule, including Southeastern (IA), and Kirkwood (IA)Community College twice, and Indian Hills (IA) in addi-tion to the always tough Mid West Athletic Conference? Is this team prepared for the challenges that the sched-ule presents? We do have a tough non-conference schedule and havethe past several years. I think you need to battle testyour team the first half of the season to prepare themfor conference play and a post season run. I think play-ing at Indian Hills, Southeastern Iowa and Kirkwoodforces your team to either elevate your level of play tocompete or take one on the chin. I do feel with ourreturning players and the quality of our new players, weshould be ready to go into those environments andcompete.

Speed, power, and quickness are all critical aspects tocompeting at the highest level possible. John Wood bas-ketball puts time, effort, and tremendous pride in theircommitment to strength and conditioning, both on thefloor and in the weight room – adding and sustainingstrength, speed and power.

Using a year round commitment to basketball-specific‘power training’, developing an athlete’s ability to transferweight room power to the basketball floor, JWCC ath-letes become accustomed to the weight room rightaway.

Power training is only a part of the commitment to con-ditioning within the Trail Blazer program. Sprint work, overspeed training, plyometrics, and an agility series areall a major, consistent piece to developing the most well-conditioned athletes as possible. The best players are inthe best shape!

Head Coach Mike Elbe and his coaching staff are dedicat-ed to developing each student-athlete through smallgroup, individual, and team workouts. Individual andsmall group attention is a constant throughout the entireyear and in all 4 seasons – preseason, regular season, postseason, and summer.

Defensive breakdown, shooting, ball handling, passing, and several other skills are developed throughout theyear as a result of the dedication of both the coachingstaff and the players of John Wood basketball.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

John Wood basketball is more than being an athlete. Each youngman is a student first, an athlete second. The Blazer Academicsuccess program promotes classroom participation, faculty inter-action, and an organized process to see success in the classroom.

Study tables, official grade checks, and unofficial communicationwith the John Wood faculty and staff allows the student-athletesand coaching staff to keep the importance of receiving a qualityeducation at the forefront of their Trail Blazer experience.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

In the fall of 2006, the John Wood CommunityCollege family added the final phase of theircampus expansion – the Student Activity Center. The SAC houses 4 locker rooms – including amen’s and women’s varsity locker room, a weightroom, aerobics room, and a state of the art gym-nasium.

With the addition of this facility, the student-ath-letes that have earned the right to be a memberof John Wood basketball trains like champions inorder to compete to become champions.

MOVING ON PROGRAM

A part of the junior college experience is being able to re-enter the recruiting cycle of four-year programsaround the country. Four year programs at every level of NCAA and NAIA routinely enter into the junior col-lege ranks to find a player that is prepared to make an impact right away. John Wood basketball student-athletes are no different.

Over the past 18 years, we have witnessed many of our graduates have great successes as they move onfrom John Wood to continue their academic and athletic careers. As a young man finishes his eligibility inJWCC’s basketball program, the coaching staff and support staff have provided a variety of experiencesthat can prepare that athlete to succeed at their new college.

Head Coach Mike Elbe and his coaching staff are committed to exposing the young men in our programto programs across the country. Countless phone calls, emails, and updates are shared throughout the yearin order to give our players as many viable options as possible.

The past two seasons are great indicators of that commitment. All ten sophomores over the past two sea-sons that had an interest in continuing their playing career are on scholarship at a four-year university thisseason. It is not uncommon to have over 100 four year schools actively vying for graduates from our pro-gram – because they are typically prepared to succeed, academically and athletically. The map belowshowcases the coast-to-coast approach that our Moving On program provides.
