Tradition Paul Received From the Pre-Pauline

Church1Cor. 11:23-25 ¶ For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you,

The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, tooka loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Footwashing (John 13:1-11)

Fra Angelico (1459)There are No "Words of Institution" in the Gospel of John.

Rather, at the point where the words of institution are found in the Synoptics, in John, there is the story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.

Another Pre-Pauline Tradition

1Cor. 15:3 ¶ For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 1Cor. 15:4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 1Cor. 15:5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 1Cor. 15:6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 1Cor. 15:7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 1Cor. 15:8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

What Scriptures?

"Christ Died for Our Sins, According to the Scriptures" 1 Cor 15:3

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 (Servant Song 4) Along with Isa 42:1-4 ,Isa 49:1-6, and Isa 50:4-9 , one of the so-called "Servant Songs" in the Book of Isaiah [i. e. Second Isa = Isa 40-55(66)]

Servant Song 4: Isa 52:13 – 53:3

Is. 52:13 See, my servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up,

and shall be very high. Is. 52:14 Just as there were many who were astonished at him

—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond

that of mortals— Is. 52:15 so he shall startle many nations;

kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall

see, and that which they had not heard they shall

contemplate. Is. 53:1 Who has believed what we have heard?

And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? Is. 53:2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. Is. 53:3 He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him of no account.

Page 10: Traditions ofwordsofinstitution

(Continued) Isaiah 53:4-9Is. 53:4 ¶ Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases;

yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

Is. 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the punishment that made us whole,

and by his bruises we are healed. Is. 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way,

and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Is. 53:7 ¶ He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;

like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers

is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Is. 53:8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut

off from the land of the living, stricken for the

transgression of my people. Is. 53:9 They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich,

although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Page 11: Traditions ofwordsofinstitution

(Continued) Isa 53:10-12Is. 53:10 ¶ Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain.

When you make his life an offering for sin,

he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days;

through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. Is. 53:11 Out of his anguish he shall see light;

he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.

The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Is. 53:12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the

strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the

transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the

transgressors.

Servant Song 1: Isaiah 42:1-4

Is. 42:1 ¶ Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him;

he will bring forth justice to the nations. Is. 42:2 He will not cry or lift up his voice,

or make it heard in the street; Is. 42:3 a bruised reed he will not break,

and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.

Is. 42:4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth;

and the coastlands wait for his teaching.

Matt 12:17-20 (Quoting Isa 42:1-3)

Matt. 12:17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: Matt. 12:18 “Here is my servant, whom I have chosen,

my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased.

I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the

Gentiles. Matt. 12:19 He will not wrangle or cry aloud,

nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. Matt. 12:20 He will not break a bruised reed

or quench a smoldering wick until he brings justice to victory."

Servant Song 2: Isaiah 49:1-4

Is. 49:1 ¶ Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away!

The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named

me. Is. 49:2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword,

in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow,

in his quiver he hid me away. Is. 49:3 And he said to me, “You are my servant,

Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” Is. 49:4 But I said, “I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;

yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.”

(continued) Isaiah 49:5-6

Is. 49:5 ¶ And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his

servant, to bring Jacob back to him,

and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the LORD,

and my God has become my strength— Is. 49:6 he says,

“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob

and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the

earth.”
