CONCEPT NOTE

In the 8th Century AD, under the auspices of the Tibetan king, Trisong Dhetsen, an international conference on medical sciences was organised in Tibet, perhaps first of its kind in the history of humanity. This significant event was attended to by delegates from all across Asia and as a result of which, the Tibetan medical system developed to an unparalleled degree of sophistication.

The importance of the Tibetan traditional system of medicine has also been duly recognised by the Indian Government that passed legislation in the Parliament of India to bring Tibetan Medical tradition into the country’s mainstream as a distinct medical system.

The world today is undoubtedly facing a severe health crisis which has significant impacts on community health, loss of lives and on economy. This problem can potentially be overcome with the help of various existing medical systems. While allopathic medicine has an advantage of immediately treating the external components of diseases effectively, it is the traditional medical systems like Tibetan medical tradition, that propagate a more holistic approach and way of treating patients considering their mental aspects. This combined mind-body medical approach explores the interconnections between the two – body and mind - and is also being gradually recognised by allopathic medicine now a days as an integral component of treating patients.

The Tibetan medical system is very close to the heart of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as one of the treasures of the Tibetan ancient wisdom culture. He very often emphatically advises the Tibetan medical Institutions to be more actively engaged in undertaking research and in coming forth with innovative ways of bringing further improvement in this ancient system of healing. This led to the tremendous development of Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute’s (TMAI) Department of Pharmacy to the creative invention of more medicines and herbal products.

TIBET HOUSE

The invasion of Tibet by Communist Chinese in 1959, threatened the survival of the rich cultural heritage of Tibetans, their language, religion, philosophy, arts and sciences along with their identity and race. The invasion forced the Tibetans to flee from their home into exile in India. Seeing the great danger of losing the rich cultural heritage and identity of the Tibetan community, in 1965, Tibet House was established by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the vision of universal inter-dependence and the need to develop a sense of harmony and compassion as the basis of happiness for humanity and to preserve the rich culture of Tibetans from dying.

Tibet House had its humble beginnings in Jor Bagh, after which it moved to its present location in Lodi Estate in 1974. Tibet House aims to bring together Buddhist masters and Tibetologists, people across different disciplines, students and practitioners and the common man through its various programmes and events. With growing interest in Buddhist teachings world over, Tibet House continues to expand its objectives in saving Tibet’s heritage and in exploring and working towards Tibet House’s potential contribution to the ethical development of the modern society.

Tibet House has a Library, Museum, various study programmes on Buddhist Philosophy, conferences on interdisciplinary subjects such as neuroscience and Buddhist Phychology.

MEN-TSEE-KHANG

Historically, Men-Tsee-Khang was established in 1916 by the 13 Dalai Lama in Lhasa, Tibet. In 1959 the People’s Republic of China invaded Tibet and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India followed by 80,000 Tibetans. His Holiness was given residence in Mussorie by the Indian Government and then a year later in 1960 was granted permanent residence in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India. Besides rehabilitation of the Tibetan refugees, His Holiness also started to set up religious, cultural and educational Institutes in order to preserve the rich ancient cultures and traditions of Tibet.

Thus, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama re-established Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute in Dharamsala on 23 March, 1961. The Institute initially started with a doctor and an astrologer with ten students in two separate campuses in Dharamsala called Chopra House and Gleenmore Cottage. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden and Ven. Dukhorwa Lodoe Gyatso were the forerunners of Medicine and Astrology Schools. In 1967, the two schools were merged together as Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical & Astro. Institute in Mcleod Ganj and shifted to the present location in 1982 where the Headquarter of the institutes operates.

The Academic field of activity includes, Men-Tsee-Khang College, Pharmaceutical Department, Astrology Department, Research & Development Department, Materia Medica Department, Documentation & Publication Department, Herbal Product Research department, Body, Mind and Life Department and China Desk.

The Institute has 50 branch medical clinics in India (rural/remote areas and city based).
